Cheslin Kolbe is actually underrated in my opinion- no weakness in attack or defence and has X factor - the charge down, line out throw in and goal kicking…with a height and weight “disadvantage “ - but all you hear about is the French scrum half - who I think a majority of his highlights real is down to excellent support lines in contrast with Cheslin engineering attacks and tries out of nothing
@amazeballsvideos3 ай бұрын
NaH Cheslin got bumped and injured in many tackles trying to tackle big guys. He also is weak in rucks and going forward in contact when there is no space. Don't be biased. Big wingers like Caleb Clark, Duhan vd Merwe etc can score with a 5m scrum running like a forward over in no space and they can clean rucks. Don't forget Cheslin is piggy back riding from the massive dominant Springbok forwards. Easy to look like a rockstar whem your forwards dominate everyone. Cheslin is good yes but he has his weakness. And again = we have the best forwards in the world. A world comp with backs only vs backs we will not win that. = 100% fact!

Fourie Du Preez (Always underrated. Springboks always had a high win % rate when Fourie was playing) & Os Du Randt (Os had 90 caps for the Springboks and is a two time World Cup winner), arguably the best prop the game has seen. From the amateur era it will always be Frik Du Preez for forwards and Danie Gerber as a backline player I think at the end of their respective careers, PSDT will go down as the greatest Springbok to ever play the game. Eben the greatest Lock.

I agree with everything you saying. How much do you think caps play in determining great players or even the greatest players? For example is a shorter more impactful career better than a longer career were the form hardly dips? I think we don't really know how much Eben brings to the party because he's been soo consistent and been around for soo long. And before that we had the legendary 'combo'. I do think PSDT has a good shout for the greatest Bok ever. But can we say that only of he reaches 100?

@@Jon.AmyTFD Caps play a big role, but should not be the only determining factor. I am not taking anything away from Eben. This is why I believe he will go down as the greatest Lock in Springbok history. Remember that PSDT has struggled with some serious, almost career ending, injuries. What makes PSDT special is that he never has a bad game and is just a special breed of rugby player who is the envy of every Team in the world. He will reach 100 tests soon and has a good chance of being World Player of the year again.

He was our talisman for many years in the the transition between 2009 to the 2019 team. He was man of the match in the 2019 final and played very well in the 2023 team. I will never forget the moment in the 2015 WC where he peeled off the back of the scrum, tied up a defender and popped the ball to Fourie Du Preez out the back of his hand for the try to put us through. So difficult to pick a GOAT! Each era produced a player or two that just raised the bar. Of course, our years of (rightful) isolation also makes it difficult to really measure the players from that era against their international counterparts. Players like Danie Gerber or Naas Botha could really change a game on their own. A player who would probably be the most capped if he hadn't fallen out of favour for off the field reasons is Frans Steyn. An absolute rugby prodidgy with a monster boot and ability to bust the gainline, especially when he was a little younger. But Eben is definitely up there! A true South African legend and servant of the game, a warrior with absolutely no quit in him. We love that guy! Thanks for a great show Jim! Keep it coming!

I have a limited knowledge of the history but being a 50 something SAFFA I would rank the greatest Springboks of all time into a top 15 (biased toward modern players), chronologically: my list is subjective and it starts from the 1960's. It’s so difficult to compare different positions to conclude who the greatest player is of all time. I think Eben will be remembered as the best Bok Lock of all time. As Jim mentioned, he can do the Bakkies and Victor role as well as either of them. His longevity is also something to behold, especially with the physical nature in which he plays the game.

Hi Jim, great show. Os Du Rant was my best player. Played in 1995 RWC and then 2007 RWC. Something that may be worth exploring. I get 11% commission 💚🇿🇦 need to explore the potential of a rugby hall of fame for iconic players.

Francois Pienaar ... for what he and Madiba did for the country in 1995, for leading an inexperienced 'rookie' team to a home RWC, for being the only rugby player to become the central character in an A-list Hollywood movie, and most importantly for what he's put back into South African rugby development since his retirement. Without Francois establishing the FNB Varsity Cup, to bridge the gap between a great school system and a great club system, South Africa wouldn't have the depth of players to supply clubs around the world as well as locally, and the Boks wouldn't have the Bomb Squad ... or be able to field 7th & 8th in line locks yet still be competitive while the top 6 are out injured.

Jim - to your point about Rassie. I'm not kidding when I say that I think he's done more for South Africa as a country than any other human since Mandela. The last time people were this united behind a single person, it was Mandela. Siya is there too, but Siya himself will tell you that he is who he is because of Rassie. That team is everything that's good about SA.

When we talk about Francois Pienaar, it is important to remember the guy Captained The Boks on his debut. One of the key reasons he never got the caps, is his involvement in the fight for professionalism in 1995/19996. I’ll say the same for Mr Pienaar as Siya Kolisi. If they don’t captain their respective Bok teams, those teams don’t win the World Cup.

It is impossible to be objective about who is the best. The players you mentioned are all in the conversation, plus many more.
