The Specialized Diverge Sport Carbon is by far my favorite drop bar bike I've ever owned, but there are a few things about it that I wish I had known before I jumped on the hugely popular Diverge bandwagon. In this video, I share 7 things a potential Specialized Diverge buyer might consider before forking over the cash.
Ritchey Beacon Bars:
amzn.to/3bddXGc (40cm)
amzn.to/3tyAofr (42cm)
amzn.to/3tvKI7S. (44cm)
Support the channel and pick up some stickers (and Future Shock spacers if you need them).
Thanks!!

Just stumbled in on your channel. Finally received my Diverge last week after months of waiting. Haven't ridden in many years and bought the bike to help with my running after suffering several stress related injuries related to long runs. I love the bike and can see why cyclists are as addicted as runners. Learning a lot about riding and looking forward to following along.

Have had my 2021 e5 comp and really happy with the level I purchased. Replaced the wheels, and honestly have been riding it more road. 35 gravel king SS’s. I zoom when needed for sure, may get a road bike next. Looking team machine or tarmac next , but Last July I went aluminum diverge for my all around bike. Truly versatile. Been on gravel and tarmac. Great bike imo. Can make it road if you want and hang.

Excellent overview and explanation. I just bought a 2023 2021 Specialized Diverge Elite E5. I was nervous when I brought the bike home thinking I should have bought a 650B gravel bike. After your review and others, the diverge accommodates both 700C and 650B. Another interesting fact with the 2023 Diverge Elite E5 is I normally ride a 56 road bike as I am 6ft tall. However, my local bike shop said the 58 fit me better than the 56. I listened but was nervous when I got home. After some research, I see what they mean. I went on 99 spokes and compared a few other bikes at 56 and the 58 is a better fit, at least I hope so. In fact, when I put the 58 next to my 56 Cannondale EVO5 and my 1997 56 Reynolds 708 old raod bike, the 58 looks smaller. Unique geometry. My first upgrade is wider tires and just ride. In time, I can get different wheels, etc in time. Ride more, modify later.

Great review. I’ve ridden over 1000m on my Diverge Sport Carbon on both gravel and road in the past year. I am newer to biking but so glad to hear your pov on the tires. I thought it was just me! I’ve been training for my first Century and it’s been a challenge on the Pathfinder Pro 700x42 tires and DT Swiss G540 rim tires that came with the bike. Just paid for a new set of carbon wheels/30-32c tires for when I plan to go on the road alone. I hope it was worth it and won’t be too hard to switch the wheels out.

I got my diverge comp E5 2 years ago, done 7500 miles. No problems fitting stuff in frame trangle with the 64 cm model ;) As you mentioned, the lack of space to mount stuff on the handlebars is a bit of an issue. I bought the sport model (2021), upgraded the wheels to Zipp 303s wheels, replaced the hover bars with my 3t bars and stem. And switched tires to schwalbes. I also changed the spacer under the shock to a shorter one. Once I did that the bike is super nice. The sport doesn’t have the swat - I don’t like the swat box. I also put the heaviest spring in the shock to firm it up.

Once I got Roval Terra CLXs on my Diverge Expert it was totally clear the bike really is awesome, but with the stock wheels simply not so much. Great video! I'm thinking about getting a used entry level Diverge 2020 or 2021, but I'm unsure of the mechanical brakes? Where I'm at, the weather will be just as much rain as there's sun, but it's quite flat so the descents will be short and not very steep. Are they "ok" for this type of riding? Is it a waste of money to get a bike with the mechanical one's now and upgrade later? Money, unfortunately, *IS* an object in my case. Any thoughts on this topic are appreciated!

This is interesting about the height of cockpit, you are speaking about. I've measured Topstone (M) and Diverge (54) - from ground to handlebar. Stams in minus position, installed as high as possible. Results: Topstone 96cm, Diverge 94. Diverge has BB height 1,5cm lower than topstone, so "the real" height should be considered as 95,5cm. Still 0,5cm lower than topstone and this is with its uprised handlebar. If you install such a handlebar in topstone, the results would be like 95,5-97,5. So +2cm of height for topstone. I dont get it because Diverge has 18mm taller stack, though a shorter headtube.

I just found your channel while researching the Diverge. I am @5'2"+ and should take a 49 in this bike according to their fitting guide. I have a Trek Checkpoint 49 and the geometry is such that I am dealing with toe overlap, and too long and low up front. How are you finding the geometry on the size 52? I think this bike has a wider wheel base than the Checkpoint. Also, you mention the seat bag, but doesn't it come with the SWAT compartment eliminating the need for a seat bag? Thank you for your video. It was very informative.
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out! The toe overlap may not be a big issue since the headtube angle on the diverge is more slack (this contributes to the wider wheelbase). Check out bikeinsights for a cool graphical representation of the 2 bikes superimposed upon one another. For me on the 52cm, I’m no where near any toe overlap like I was on my older Roubaix sl4. As for the swat down tube storage, it only comes on the comp model and higher, so I don’t have it on the sport.

Overall I am very happy with my Diverge Sport Carbon. My only issue has been the stock tires that it came with. The specialized pathfinders are not tubeless ready. While researching what new tubeless tire to get, I've just been making due with the pathfinders. They are very fast when going in a straight line. But god help me if I have to corner on dirt or sand or even on tarmac. I feel that they give no grip at all when cornering. I find myself sliding all over the place. I'm looking at getting 43mm Panaracer Gravelking SK+ and going tubeless and dropping the tire pressure. Hopefully that gives me more grip and confidence on the dirt. Other than that, I love my Diverge. Great bike!

Haha true about the non tubeless Pathfinders. Wondering if you can lower your pressure to gain some traction. Even though they're tubed, you might be able to drop down a bit. Heard great things about the new SK+ tires. And I think tubeless is really a worthwhile upgrade. Thanks!

Funny you ask. I actually sold my Roubaix SL4 to pay for the Diverge. It's wasn't a current Roubaix, but a 2015 model. In exchange for more comfort and gravel capabilities, I was expecting a huge penalty on the paved roads going to the Diverge. However, I haven't noted any substantial sluggishness with the Diverge. Admittedly, I don't ride with a powermeter, but Strava road segment times have not changed. If you are truly torn between the Roubaix and the Diverge, I'd say go Diverge (though I'm clearly biased :) )

Kind of a loaded question, but will come down to geometry. Diverge has lower bb and higher stack. Will feel like you’re riding ‘in’ the bike as opposed to on top of it. Revolt, on the other hand, has higher trail so may few more stable off-road. Handling will not be as quick as diverge, and may wander when climbing at low speeds. I’ve ridden both and prefer the diverge as an all arounder, but clearly both are very popular.

Happy new bike day! I’m about the same height and I am between sizes too (52/ 54). I’ve been on a 52 lately and enjoy it. For tires, tubeless is a good option and I’ve adopted the wider-is-better mentality, unless it’s a pure road bike (unlikely since you bought a diverge). I started on the stock 38mm widths and am now at 43mm. I have some Rene Herse 48mm width tires on deck and I have a feeling I’ll prefer those. Regarding future shock - I’ve got a bunch of vids on it, but in short, I like it and am frustrated by it at the same time. You may consider going redshift stem and seatpost if you need some extra squish. I’d say for now, enjoy it and slowly identify gaps or areas you’d like to change, and go from there.

Nice, the E5 is a great option. I also fondly remember the grad student life, so I feel you. As for the geo, it’s been great on just about everything. It’s relaxed, but not unwieldy.
