What was the long term review on the delete? Also, how are you getting on with the Diverge? I'm just getting back into cycling after a number of years hiatus, I've got myself a Sirrus 2.0, most likely will be upgrading to a Sirrus X 4.0 or possibly an entry level Diverge, just need to figure out what type of riding I'm going to be doing, new area too, I'm SE London UK / Kent, there are quite a few cross country loops around here, but also I will be doing a fair bit of city riding. I have a few months until my cycle2work scheme kicks in. Was really into the idea of FS 1.5, but what are the benefits vs financial cost and weight trade off? Also, at 5' 9" with a positive ape index I went large size frame on the Sirrus, wondering if I could be better off on a medium

Great video! Based on this great idea. Any chance you have plans to refine this “delete” and create one with A: a shorter lower section, (at some point the friction interface between the steerer ID and the cylinder OD become redundant.) B: the upper section that has an OD for a standard 1-1/8th stem. Add spacers or trim the length to preference…. I believe with a little refinement you can safely get this delete insert under 100 grams. There would be a real difference in feel at that point. It would not be a placebo. Keep it up.

Really interesting video, thanks! I suspect the different feeling (sharper) in steering that you felt is due to the rigid fork, no squish in the cornering, no change in HT angle, rather than the reduced weight. The Future shock wears at the front and rear, increasing clearance between the inner and outer sleeves. It will make a more pronounced grinding/rubbing noise as the clearance increases. This is a great video. Heck though, I think that quite a lot of the “innovations”of the multi-£billion 'cycling industry' (including Future Shock) are more about ‘enhancing the perceived value’ of bikes and thereby increasing their overall retail price than about anything else. In a similar way, I remember my grandfather, who used to make and sell expensive, handmade fishing rods (back in the day), telling me with a big smile on his face that a lot of the ‘fishing tackle' he made and sold, was more about catching the fisherman than about catching fish! It's always stuck in my mind as an object lesson in commercialism, as well as a comment on the potential gullibility of the consumer. What he was getting at, does of course apply as much to ‘anglers’ in the literal sense, as it does figuratively to cyclists and other consumers more broadly. And I have to admit to being guilty of this folly myself too, at times. No doubt, there are genuine new developments and innovations that bring some genuine benefits to the cyclist but they typically come at great extra cost and yet provide in reality, only a small ‘diminishing return’.

Modular Replacement beats Proprietary Designs. Same for Canyon Double Decker Bar - which is worse as handlebar is irreplaceable. The Duck bill is an Achilles heal as it can break. Besides it can allow water trickling. RedShift stem is a better option! In fact if companies don't sell pedals with bikes, they shouldn't sell seats (and reduce cost) and handlebars either (or provide size/type options).
@rale25622 жыл бұрын
I am also thinking of building a rigid tube to replace my future shock. Your first version looks not bad but I am wondering why you are keeping the complex shape with the sharp notch at the diameter change. This is not good for fatigue. I will mill a tube with two diameters out of one piece with a smooth transition from lower to upper diameter so that no notch is given. No notch, no local stress concentration and no fatigue issue. There is no need for a rubber etc. since there is no mechanic etc. to be protect at the diameter change. Keep it simple. Since it will be milled out of one piece, you can also directly integrate the thread fixing for the upper ‚headset cover‘.

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like a good idea to keep it more simple, but there are aesthetics to consider as well as ease of installation and preservation of fit. Without the boot, there will just be exposed metal of different diameter. Or you end up using 35mm worth of hs spacers to avoid changing the stack. Design aside, or analysis shows no localized stresses to be concerned about. The prototype is undergoing ISO fatigue testing as we speak, so we will see if anything comes up.

Please keep the research going! I have a Sirrus X 4.0 and I love riding it, the geometry suits me perfectly. But long term I don't want to be forking out big money for a replacement futureshock system when I can go up a tyre size and fit your de!ete system. A definite sale from the Uk.....

Please make an aftermarket FS. I tried to brainstorm a generic one that could fit on all gravel/road bikes, but I guess my MechE degree + 0 real engineering experience wasn't enough. Also, Specialized is incentivized to have us replace the FS. I would bet that 500 hours was picked to be low enough to generate max revenue (max # replacements), while high enough to not deter buyers of the bikes. For me, unless the FS starts feeling bad (or wiggles, jiggles, and makes sound etc.), I probably would just continue using it past 500 hrs.

I agree, until I feel a difference in performance I will keep the FS I have (first version with springs) in use.

I have about 1,500 hours on my Diverge with Future Shock 1.0. Still works, but not quite as smoothly as when new. Interested in the delete option to save some weight.
@Cycle95682 жыл бұрын
Would be interesting to see how light this option could be. Could you cut another 50 grams away? How long does the adapter actually need to be? Also, thanks for making the 5mm adapter rings I have purchased a set and have one installed on my bike currently.
@TheBikeSauce2 жыл бұрын
Yea it’s a first draft for sure. Although being the stem area, I’d rather not see what I can ‘get away with.’ It’s already more than 150g lighter than either FS model

@@TheBikeSauce totally understand the liability issue. But, say I am running the 0mm headset spacer vs the 15mm one... That is 15mm of 7075 that I don’t need on my bike. 😁

Bought my first new (to me) Roubaix which came with FS 1.5. This is the first I heard of Specialized's recommended replacement cycle of 500 hours...that's essentially once per outdoor riding season! Love the prototype testing. Looks solid. Would an aftermarket FS (1.5 or 2.0) be viable?

Mine is allready going for 30000 kms, it works like new. Never had a problem with it, but this is a great solution!

Nicely engineered...but to me the main takeaway from the video is don't buy proprietary stuff like this in the first place. What's the point in spending extra dollars on the Future shock system, only to 'delete' it a couple of years later? I made similar experiences with Cannondale's Headshok...pretty cool when new but expensive and. Complicated to maintain and replace. Since then I stick with the simple stuff...:)
@TheBikeSauce2 жыл бұрын
No arguments there. I think a lot of consumers buy into the future shock system without understanding the long term maintenance requirements

@@daniels.2720 I had the opportunity to buy a used Diverge at a good price, and then I noticed the FS boot and called off the purchase 🤔

Professor Sauce doesn't it seem like just yesterday... the Future Shock was the biggest marketing story in bicycling? It seemed to be so high-tech and futuristic. Now once the bling wore off you're sticking a chunk of aluminum in there and turning it back into a hardhead. Is that the opposite of a hardtail? Good work tremendous practical student project.

I’ve got a 2022 Turbo Creo SL with a FS 2.0, and no issues, but just wanted to see what a replacement FS 2.0 would cost; $398 at Performance Bike online as of Nov. 3, 2023. Yikes, that’s an expensive maintenance item. A FS delete may be in my future (after 500 hours), and I’ll probably replace the factory aluminum bars with carbon bars for a better ride quality.
