I always argue that if you aren't running, jumping, and throwing in your workouts, then you're not really pushing or testing your body as you should be.
The point of exercise, to me, is to push the body, test its limits, and undo hours of sitting. If you're just standing in the gym curling weights - or sitting on a bench - can you really say you're doing that?
If you aren't running, jumping, rolling, throwing... do you really expect your body to hang onto those abilities as you get older?
Is it any wander many of us will lose basic mobility as we age?
In this video, I explain why everyone should jump as part of a functional training program. That can be something small, like skater hops, or something more exciting like parkour and box jumps. Whatever you choose, you'll increase bone density, improve stability, strengthen tendons, and more.
The video also shares some options to start jumping more in your training.
Do you jump in your training?
Let me know and thanks for watching!
All the best,
Adam

being a parkour athlete, 90% of my training is jumping. It's a lot of fun, probably one of the most fun thing to do for me- just jumping around on walls

Definitely relatable. Last week I got back to the fundamentals & basics and went rock & log hopping & balancing at the beach i've gone to and done that at since I was about 9 or 10 years old (i'm 33 now). Today i'll be working at running/sprinting and some light upper strengthening and conditioning, plus body mobility and stretching. Tomorrow is all out fullbody/Parkour training day, where i'll likely work at climbing specifically depending on my shoulder, and then some jumping and more running. Sunday was originally the standard day for a weekly group meet up, now I just do it because habit/tradition. "12) Climb If Parkour could be stripped down to just three types of movement, we would be left with running, jumping and climbing. Of those three, the vast majority of those who practice Parkour love the jumping, hate the running.. and neglect the climbing."

@@HeartlessKnave Parkour also has quadrupedal movement (which includes climbing and vaulting) and balancing, swinging, rolling, breakfalling, sliding, acrobatic movements like flips, etc. You can't simplify it too much because parkour can include movement and ideas from just about every movement discipline.

Sprinting is essentially a series of one-legged jumps, so jumping will help you run fast too. However, I think depth jumps should've been discussed in the video.
@HeartlessKnave
@HeartlessKnave Жыл бұрын
it's slightly implied in box jumps and you see him jumping off a box @ 1:27 3:22 6:22 It also seems silly to me to think of these two in isolation when training. To jump onto an object then carefully get down, or to jump off of it and then carefully get back onto it.

I'm 42 and i was doing quite a lot of jumping all the time. But recently was doing it without good warm-up and got partial ACL rapture, and now i'm out of jumping/running for few month after ACL reconstruction surgery. Long story short - but worth mentioning that doing mobility work and good warm-up is essential for being healthy when you jump.

Sorry to read of your injury. Warming up is vital prior to most sports and exercise sessions. Also, Adam's point about progressively building jump height/distance over time, is another vital point.

This video made me realize I’m literally the only person I’ve ever seen training jumping at my gym. I’ve seen thousands using dumbbells, treadmills, and machines, and despite having a ton of boxes for jumping, I’ve only ever seen them used for hip thrusts. I’ve added long jumps carrying weighted bags to feel even more like Batman, and it’s a new favorite exercise :D

Always a good day whenever the bioneer uploads,jumping is quite functional for incase you need to propel yourself upwards in order to,for example,escape a 10 foot dirt hole for example,with no other escape,or get out of the way of a vehicle that has changed direction and is now on the same sidewalk as you moving at monumentally high speeds,this would directly apply to me,seeing as I've noticed some strange driving behaviours from others as of recently.

Hey man,great,informing video as always,you're currently one of the only fitness channels who covers all these different aspects of fitness,and I have to respect that,along with how you occassionally cover various characters from different franchises,their abilities and what kind of training would help an individual to develop similar attributes,regarding this,do you believe you'd ever make a video on the Master Chief at any point in time? you could do some research on the various superhuman abilities he has developed through augmentation,along with feats he has performed previously,for example you could cover durability,pain tolerance,healing,maximum strength endurance,speed endurance,super vision,focus under stress,enhanced reflexes etc. Just basically interested in what you'd do with this information.

I often do high tucked jumps (sometimes mixed with a pushup, or something else, burpee-like) in between doing a combo punching/kicking combos, or in between pushups or pullups. I haven't been doing it as much lately, as I've been experimenting doing other things in between these types of exercises, but this makes me wanna go back to it... and maybe start practising single leg jumps, which I've never really done.

as someone who loves jumping, the amount of weight it put just with bone density and thickness is quite huge... I do be tall (6'5) but im 100kg which everyone is surprised to hear XD. So for people that are concerned with weight... dont jump too much (10+ hours a week), rather do it as a warm up or finisher to a workout, and add some sprints ;)
