I really like All Stars. I think Clark feels more distant in that movie because of the knowledge that he is inevitably going to die, so he just focused on being the best version of him before the end. That said, I loved your video. Death of Superman truly is one of the gems of the DC Animated Movie Universe.

agree on superman vs the elite , surprisingly for me, it will be the one of the best superman stories , because they open up the morality of the killing and how superman believes that humans can be more humane, even when they dont believe that themselves, 10/10. And that moment where he's thought to be destroyed , only to appear a literal god with his powers at his peak and that godlike rumbling voice gave me chills!

The death of Superman movie actually made me a fan of the character after hating the character for so many years. The movie nailed the feeling that Clark was just a guy doing his best. He was perfectly humanized. Everything from his storyline with lois to the involvement of his parents, to his interactions with passersby and taking pictures with fans...Clark was a likeable guy, therefore it was easy to root for him and live vicariously through his power. This also makes the inevitable ending hit even harder.

@orinanime You said "most" not all. Definitely not the most influential DC show of my time which was Justice league unlimited...where he was frankly, a tool for most of it. Being more of a marvel fan growing up will also make someone more opposed to DC's golden boy.

Superman The Animated Series (1990s) is a much better representation of the character(s). The 1940s are fun bite-sized adventures that paint Superman as a pretty likable/affable guy. (Ignore the few WW2 centric entries). Honestly, even though they're quite cheesy, the 60s and 80s cartoon and the 90s TV show, Lois and Clark, and the recent TV show, Superman and Lois, are great representations of the character. @orinanime It's not some crazy opinion not to like Superman, especially not in the 2000's. Before man of steel, his mainstream appeal suffered MASSIVELY behind the success of Batman. I didn't do a massive deep dive of Superman comics back then because Marvel had TWO whole universes I was busy reading...and only Green lantern and Batman were starting to get my attention from DC which didn't happen until later. Superman just wasn't the most popular hero growing up. The Marvel craze was everything. But like I already said, I've since come to appreciate Superman alot.

For the record, Superman didn't show any hatred towards Supergirl in the Superman Unbound. If anything, Superman showed plenty of love towards his cousin and even shows faith in her at the end. Superman was plenty likable in Superman Unbound, but clearly has control issues, which is a parallel to Brainiac. Superman is only controlling because of how he cares about people. Superman learns to be a little less controlling in the film. All Star Superman is a good film and it's comic book counterpart is worth the read. I honestly love all of the animated Superman films, with the exception of the Superman Brainiac attacks film, which wasn't all that good. I also don't like Superman red son, not because it's a bad adaptation, because it isn't, but it just uses the evil/dark Superman trope that is just overused at this point. Superman vs the elite is currently my favorite animated Superman movie. This is an okay critique for the animated Superman films, even if I don't agree with some points and even some rankings of the films.

all star superman came about as a story to portray him as a god, the way he was written in the 1930's. that superman could move planets and had not limits or weaknesses thats why he has an imunity to kryptonite.. so the movie / comic was meant to be a tribute the the original supes, and thats why its considered a good comic book. coz it not only has a good story but puts that version to rest peacefully

I would put Superman vs The Elite over Death of Superman… mostly because I kinda hate how they ended the fight. Punch twisting Doomsday’s neck to break it was really dumb IMO and I think they could have done better in finding a good way to beat Doomsday. Superman vs the Elite was very much the best of everything - from the best Superman to having a great connection and relationship with Lois and for once having a time where we can actually see a story where they are married and how each one deals with what the other does and how they help each other. Yet they are still work “rivals”, and the Elite are a great set of antagonists that are great at showing the problem with having heroes kill and what happens when they go too far… plus the ending of showing how terrifying and horrible a “Dark Superman” like everyone in the story (and some actual fans and writers at the time) wanted would really be. But not just that but that he still wouldn’t compromise his morals and found a way to win without killing anyone. That really is what makes me love that movie the most, and is why if someone tells me they hate Superman, I’ll always tell them to go watch that movie and really listen to the arguments then come back and see if you still hate Superman.

Dang thats tragic to me that watching the animated adaptation of all-star put you off from reading the comic source material because imo All-Star Superman (the book, I havent seen the movie) hits hard on all of the points that you said draws you to the character, the contemplative moments, the humanity of the character and his connection with Earth and all its people despite him being an outsider technically, and the complex case of Superman having to come to terms with his death. I really hope you give the book a read as the clear Superman fan that you are because I can promise it outdoes the movie adaptation.

You should give the All Star Superman comic a chance. I completely understand your issue with Superman being too Alien, and there are elements of that in the comic. But the comic does a better job of basically bringing every interpretation of Superman into one character. So you have the monotone stoic figure, reminiscent of a lot of pre-crisis stuff, but you also get a lot of human moments. Probably the most iconic image that didn't make it into the movie is him talking down a suicidal girl. And, just for fun, my list: 1. Superman vs The Elite 2. All Star Superman 3. The All-Star Superman story is one of those cases where it GENUINELY has to be a comic book exclusively. Once you read it (which I still highly recommend you do) you'll see my point. Just to reiterate, just like how you can't make The Diary of Anne Frank an anime, you can't try to adapt All-Star Superman into any other medium and still remain faithful. I implore you, read the comic version. Trust me. It's something that I could argue to be legitimate literature right beside Dickens and Hemingway

Death of Superman is the best story because the point of watching movies is the emotion and connection to the audience. If your a Superman fan it hits hard. The Superman VS. Elite is written to feel the opposite of the death and it shows how powerful the character is in the world. Superman logo is 2nd most known symbol in the world only to the cross. You can Google it, so the death of this character keeps The death of Superman the top and will remain there. I hope they reboot as the tech is now far better. Just my opinion but, everyone has one.

Superman vs The Elite is my favorite Superman movie and I don't mean my favorite ANIMATED movie. That film does the best job of encapsulating everything that makes Superman great. The only real downside I would say is that the animation is not my favorite. I would also very much agree that I prefer that Lois falls for Clark and not Superman. That seems to be the version that most newer adaptations are going with now a days (Superman and Lois/ My Adventures with Superman).

Your ranking of these movies comes from what stand points. Have you read any of the source material. Most of these are stand alone. Also some represent Superman at different stages of his life. Else world adventures withstanding . . . Chronologically there spot on... Humble beginnings, later in his career. Should have just put a blindfold on. There is more in going in every movie then is in the source material. I am a fan, l read every adventure. Met a few of the writers. These characters come from different times. You see one box, in comparing one to all. These are different men from different Earth's. I would put you in charge of a potato gun.

I’d only read a couple issues of All-Star Superman by the time I watched the movie. And what I got from it was that it rushed the story greatly just to get to every story beat before the end of the 90 minutes.

I disagree, Superman Doomsday is not that great, SUperman Unbound has a lot of interesting elements especially Clark's interaction with Kara and Lois so really disagree. The haircut scene is the best scene of doomsay tho. Didn't know the animated superman (not dcau, but for the movies) theme was originated in it though. I'd heard it in doomsday and elite.
