Lovely comment. I was born in 1955 and have many vivid steam railway memories, though steam ended sooner here than in Germany. I thought of steam locomotives as my friends and I missed them very much. ‘My’ friends because it was a state owned industry and every British citizen was a locomotive owner.

@Lasca34
@Lasca34 2 жыл бұрын

@Lasca34
@Lasca34 2 жыл бұрын
Is ja'n dolles Ding!
@ober-lander1965
@ober-lander1965 Жыл бұрын

I've always thought the 10 wheel (Decapod) arrangement was better on European RR because it allowed smaller dia wheels and more rail contact/traction. In the USA we tried for more speed because of distances and used larger dia wheels. Thanks for the video very well done.
@cogidubnus1953
@cogidubnus1953 3 жыл бұрын
My understanding was that in the UK the Great Eastern Decapod was supposedly introduced to produce a rate of acceleration to match electric underground trains - but never achieved much in practice...I say supposedly, as the real object was to deter the running of a rival railway into London by demonstrating it was unnecessary...it was quite short lived

The U.S. moved on from the decapod to the Santa Fe (2-10-2) configuration pretty quickly due to larger grate area. In Europe, firing rates weren’t as high as they were on American locomotives, so the 2-10-0 (1’E on the continent) was largely sufficient.

Have you also seen the 🇺🇸 AMERICAN Giant, UNION PACIFIC 4017 BIG BOY 4-8-8-4 Articulated Mallet-with single expansion 4 cylinders. Also, I have been watching steam locomotives from all around the world, like the British FLYING SCOTSMAN 4472 and 60103. And Russia P-36 2-4-2, (in America it is a 4-8-4). And Tokyo Japan with C-class 4-6-4 that was the basis of the Japanese Anime' movie of "GALAXY EXPRESS 999" in the 1970s. ➕ Plus, there are many videos of miniature, scale models, of live steam locomotives, that run on 7&1/4" guage track. In addition to 5" guage, and other different dimensions. And India with the FAIRY QUEEN. And Australia and the Beyer Garret 6029 4-8-4+4-8-4. And South America that has an articulated Mallet that still burns Wood in 2021!!!!! Truly AMAZING!!!!! Thank you! May GOD Bless all of us with peace and wisdom!!!+++ AMEN!

Only two cylinders that I could see. But, still wonderful, nonetheless. It does sound different. But I don't know where the third cylinder is.

It is between the frames , at the front of the loco hidden from view.

As Brian says, it's not visible except from underneath the locomotive. You can tell it's there, though: six "chuffs" per wheel rotation, instead of the usual four.

There are many, many European and British 3-cylinder classes. Only American one that comes to mind is the UP 9000 4-12-2's. (If you look at a typical traditional (i.e. 1850s - 1920s) British loco you won't see any cylinders at all. Inside cylinders.)

You can see the ends of the piston rod and valve rod covers sticking up at an angle on the front plate. The center cylinder had to be higher so the connecting rod would clear the driver axles.

It definitely has an unique sound. I am still trying to figure out how the third cylinder powered the engine.

It's between the frames acting on a crank axle. The sound isn't unique. Due to limited loading gauge, many British loco's had (have) three cylinders. The Tornado is but one of them.

@@984francis I think Robert just meant that the sound is unique to (i.e., characteristic of) three-cylinder locomotives in general.

French locomotives had mostly 4 cylinders compound. Much stronger much mor efficency but unfortunately also more expensif in service

French 141p 241p and 231d,e,f,g,h and k are on a different level. 141r (build from alco) is probably the most efficiently working steam locomotive especially whennit comes to service/power relationship.
