First, I want to say your channel is great. I have been trumpet since about 1983, self taught. I always wanted to lear n trumpet. We had 8 children in the family, and I don't think my parents could send me to learn trumpet without the others taking lessons. And they couldn't afford us all to take lessons. But I took music theory in High School, so that helped me a lot in learning trumpet. I learned using trumpet lesson books. I played in church all the hymns and I play classical. I loved playing in a little orchestra for a while. I read music and can transpose on sight up or down.. I love jazz trumpet and I've been learning to play jazz. I am learning from Jazz lesson books and CDs to play along with them. I'm checking out your channel to learn whatever I can through you. Learning the rifts and arpeggios are great. I've learned a lot of rifts with the books and CDs and many Jazz articulation studies. One of the books is, "The art of jazz trumpet". My other book I use most have us playing parts of well known jazz pieces by the Jazz greats. I wish they gave us the whole pieces. I believe one learns quicker and are encouraged when you can play great melodies, instead of just articulation studies. I am sort of stuck on reading music. I am trying to play by ear more and more, and trying to do improv. It is difficult for me. And doing the fast ascending and descending they do in jazz. I'm fine with the slower pieces and faster ones, but the very quick up and down I just can't get up to speed! I think it would be much better, if I could have lessons. Watching you is the next best thing. Will you be covering that aspect of jazz playing. The song, " Portrait of Jennie", by Clifford Brown, I do alright accept for the fast ups and downs. I'm getting better.... Any tips? I really need to play jazz with others. My hubby and I play music together, He's a classically trained violinist. He's learnig jazz as well. But we need a pianist to really keep the beat and pull together. Oh well..I need to ask; Why when playing the rift, don't have the notation on the staff as well as what you have, the written G7 C7 etc.? I think it would be easier to play with you. if we can read the music. So sorry for such a LONG comment. God bless you!

Thank you for sharing your story! That gives me tons of insight. To address your questions: 1. I don’t show the music on the screen for this video because playing by ear is the important skill to have and develop as an improvising musician. Jazz or any other type of improvisational music is an aural art form rather than a written one. We have to learn how to use our ears and play what we hear. 2. Tip on how to play by ear: use songs (from any genre) you already know and sing them. Then practice matching the pitch of what you sing to the notes on the trumpet. Why? Because these songs are already ingrained and familiar. It makes the process of playing by ear on your trumpet a lot easier. 3. How to play faster: practice painfully slow so you don’t make any mistakes and it’s exactly what you want it to sound like...good sound, proper articulation and rhythmically steady. Then increase the tempo every 5 to 20 clicks once you feel comfortable until you reach the goal tempo. Once you reach the goal tempo, also try practicing the lick or music at a faster tempo than required so the original tempo feels easier.

Thank you so much for this lesson. Great approach with the playing by hearing. Though I play Clarinet it is very useful. It a Bb instrument too. I am recently studying the blues in all keys. And it was getting a bit boring to play just scales and arpeggios. Now I have enough to do to transpose all of your licks and ideas. Thanks and greetings from Germany.

Hi TBP, for me the most interestin part is at 4:20 when you use the bass line. Reason: it is important to now the 4 notes of a 7th chord. I'm absolutely not a pro player, and unfortunately I have to play with one arm due to disability, but I'm here to thank you and to undeline that if you know a chord, the notes used in each chord can be a great solo especially if you do not always start from the roothn but lincking together each chord with the colsest not between one chord and the next one. I think this is more and morer difficult than playing a pentatonic or blues scale. At least for me. And to me, TBP, your video is a Huge inspiration for that reason. THANX A LOT
