Agree! You’re so right that “luxury” is about the enjoyment of things (aesthetics, designer goods, spending time w loved ones, brick laying, etc.). Once the enjoyment turns into distress, it’s no longer luxury. But please continue to do unboxings or introducing us to things you think we would enjoy knowing about or make us better versions of ourselves! Keep up the great videos. Thank you! ♥️

The ugly truth about these bags is that a lot of people want them purely because it's a status symbol and to belong, not out of a love of fashion. Fashion is far more than a bag. Most don't pair these bags with thought out outfits, or even understand color stories, stitching, silhouettes, etc. It's interesting that you cited The Row, because it's hugely fashionable but not widely coveted by the luxury community... because it isn't overtly expensive and easily recognizable. People want a Birkin because it's a rich lady's bag. Same for the Chanel flap. The VCA jewelry. The frankly hideous Zimmerman dresses. The impractical Oran sandals. Because they're noticeably expensive. It's sad that adults are caught up in this nonsense, and it's even worse that they're putting their mental health and finances at risk to show off to people who aren't even watching.

I was attacked by hundreds of these females because I stated I have a Reissue but I would prefer to buy a seasonal Chanel bag as I didn’t like the five or six classic Chanel bags. Suddenly my phone blew up with notifications. They told me I didn’t like the brand because I didn’t like the five or six classic bags, were belligerent and used expletives, some were even brave enough to direct messaged me. This is day four and they have not stopped. I asked a lady why as an adult she felt the need to swear at me because of a bag? She said that what I said was a “males body part move”. These women have 60 classic flaps in every colour and size but the way they conduct themselves and move through life, they need medical intervention.

@@equatorialjourney4478 I was asking for recommendations of seasonal bags because I wanted an everyday bag for my birthday that was not heavily branded or with bright yellow gold hardware. I enjoy a logo but I wear subtle luxury much more. I have to agree that they were mostly “new money”, you could smell it through the internet and their comments confirmed it. When one said she felt sorry for me, another said leather wasn’t animal skin, I bursted out laughing, fell off my office chair and I spilt my coffee. “New money” all day long 😂 These items are just that “items” and I cannot imagine being so rude to an absolute stranger because they do not want to show their status in life by owning 137 classic flaps. They honestly have no idea how cheap they looked and sounded.

Here is my perspective. I always loved LV mono specifically Speedys. I had 2 sold them but when they launched the Speedy B it now fits my life. I need versatility hand held shoulder cross body. I carried it nonstop literally every day for almost 7 years. It fits my life. I always wanted a Chanel classic flap and was saving for one but life always got in the way so that money had to be used in other ways. My husband at first wasn’t onboard with the purchase of the LV but came around so much that the last year of his life he bought me a bag we saw in a magazine in the waiting room of his radiation appointment. It was a Coach and he really wasn’t paying things much mind but he glanced down said he thought it was cute and smaller than my SB30 and got online on his phone then and there and ordered it for me. That 360 Coach means more to me than any designer bag could ever and I recently started carrying it again. I had put it away since it was the last gift he bought me and I didn’t want it ruined. When he passed 2 months later a former friend said to me “now you have the money to buy that Chanel” referring to his life insurance. That was the last thing I allowed her to ever say to me. PS I have zero want for a Chanel. I did purchase a preloved 10 year old purple Balenciaga City last year which was less than the Coach but I love purple. Things don’t matter unless there is love behind it. People matter. I have been subscribed to Erica almost as long as I have been to you and I agree with what she had to say. It’s sad how many women feel the need to live an Instagram life.

This message is so beautiful and I love that you said “this was the last thing I allowed her to say to say to me”. People are so outrageously disgusting over a stupid classic flap and many other material things that just do not matter at all. The universe wanted you to know who you were holding in your friends group. I have my Speedy 25 that my Granny bought me a million years ago, she has since passed. My friend said replace the leather. The vachetta is as brown as it can get but I will never replace the leather because she held it, it feels like I’m holding her hand and I wear her proudly. I sold my speedy 30 and 35. They were in beautiful condition, the canvas on the 35 was the most amazing LV canvas in my entire collection but my Granny’s speedy means the world to me and we will never be parted. I’ll let go of my Reissue in a heartbeat before I let go of my speedy 25.

My Loro Piana bag was very “expensive” for me, but it’s a “if you know you know” brand with no logos and it’s screams “old money” without being overrated and tacky. Sellout ghetto celebs, and tact wannabes won’t want to be purchasing LP bags and clothes. Honestly so many rich ghetto people now with Hermes.

Researching for the next bag to buy stopped bringing the thrill and enjoyment and that's when I asked myself what the whole point was. I've sold the majority of my bags since then but I couldn't be any happier - the few pieces I kept are in a constant rotation and they get so much use & love. You have great insights and I love when you do videos like these!

I love this video. You put everything into perspective. For alot of us, these luxury videos are like candy...a momentary bite of sweetness to brighten up our dull days or take us away from our problems for 10 minutes. But we know we don't "live" here. You can't live off of sugar. We need real food...nutrients and vitamins and good food. But it's fun, for a few minutes out of our day, to have that "sugar" take us away and give us a break... before we go back to "real life".

You are...so wonderful. This is the best video about luxury I've ever seen. I really appreciate your openness and honesty and willingness to go against the grain because luxury culture IS getting pretty out of hand. I'm with you, the majority of people in my life don't have any idea who made what I'm wearing. I would NEVER be like "you guys, guess who I'm wearing!" They literally don't care. Today I was LITERALLY JUST thinking about how 7's aren't popular anymore and how crazy that is. In middle and high school we all wore them and everyone knew the style names and people would freak if someone got a crystal pair...now kids that age literally have no idea what the brand is, never heard of it, couldn't care less. I will say, the majority of the pairs I had 10+ years ago are STILL in near perfect condition, so they were certainly worth the $149+...cost per wear is amazing, but it's amazing how literally OUT they are. I hate when people follow trends to a T, have to put the most insanely expensive pieces together to be uppity, and are EXTRA precious with their bags. I mean like...crazy precious. I treat my luxe bags well, but I also wear them with sweats or jeans usually cross body and kind of forget that I'm wearing it. I just really like when people are who they are, don't feel like they have to evolve with trends every season, wear all of those trends even if they don't work on them...it's just really amazing how social media and influencers have affected the luxury market. It's genius in one way, and really sad in another.

I'm really into luxury minimalism. A well thought out curated luxury wardrobe. I have my list of bags I'm collecting and working towards them. Once I have them I think Ill be done. I have two designer bags and I love them. I take good care of them but you can tell I wear them daily. I think it adds to the charm. Some of the classic collector bags don't at all work with my style. In my early 20s I just wanted to have them all so I could say I had a complete collection. Now I have grown into myself and have lost the need to 'prove myself' I am drawn to items that feel are an extension of my own style.

Thanks for making this video and you totally speak my mind. At some point, social media acted like an advertising platform where we see all kinds of influencers/brands trying to promote the product simply by a post/video. I gradually felt really fed up by seeing those content every moment I'm on social media, and even diminish my appetite to buy something from that brand. There are still people out there thought they can measure up to certain social status by owning certain iconic/expensive luxury goods, but usually they forgot that there are more precious things in life apart from bags/shoes...

I recently realized that I am “purse peace” as they say in KZbin world. There are no more bags that I desire or want. Maybe that is what is going on for many. We’ve reached a saturation point in our wardrobes. I think designer bags will always be relevant and women will purchase them as a mark of some achievement, but for women that “have it all” they are “done”. I don’t watch haul unboxings any more. I don’t mind seeing one box, but a tower of boxes behind the KZbinr in a thumbnail is a huge turnoff for me. Particularly since many are just getting repeats of things they already own or the items will end up in a vlog sale in a few weeks. It’s boring and predictable. I do like shopping vlogs because I like to see what is in stores in different countries or cities and I love styling videos. We see birkin unboxings, but not so many styling videos with potentially different and CREATIVE ways to wear it. I’d like to see that.

You are a tonic!✨🌞✨ I too have been feeling this way for a while. When I was in my teens I saw an image of a birkin and I immediately fell in love. I don’t quite know why, I just loved how it looked.. the fact it didn’t scream “BRANDING”. I looked everywhere trying to find the name and brand etc. not realising they cost thousands and were such a desired item. Today, I still love them. Do I own one? No. But I own unbranded leather versions, which I personally am just as happy with. I just feel they are just so OVER-DONE now. Which I find incredibly frustrating. Mainly because people just own them to own them, not because they love the bag. It’s all just so cluttered. Secretly I blame the Kardashian’s and their influence.. but in all seriousness, no hate to them. But my point is, I wholeheartedly agree with you and Alix’s views. Glad to finally hear people talking about this💖

That’s why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors: everyone likes something different. With Hermès bags I think it’s partly about being excluded from “the club” that hits a nerve with people who can’t get a Birkin or Kelly. Your lovely mom works/worked for Hermès so likely easier for you to get a bag than the average person. I have them, and got them fairly easily from the store, so not my area of desperation. We never know what’s going on in people’s lives or who they are outside of social media. Hopefully their real lives are more well rounded.

Love this video! What is mainstream and considered trendy or classic now will change in years to come. I think also for those who are into luxury - we live and consume content in such a insular way (not different to any other hobbies or interest) that we mistake that EVERYONE around us feels that way about luxury goods. When in reality, a majority of the population is unaware of what the heck is a birkin bag, chanel classic flap etc. We end up competing against each other and trying to outdo each other online which makes no sense. Buy what you want if it makes you happy - if it stresses you out, then maybe you need to rethink why you want it in the first place.

Very insightful video. I am 43 and just got into luxury items - I spent most of my life living with the basics, sometimes even living in poverty and being content with that. I would see girls walking around with LV or watch The Hills and see these younger girls wearing these gorgeous Chanel bags -- I remember thinking wow those are nice, but it wasn't a priority for me at the time to save for those at that time in my life. Now after having 3 kids, two of which are toddlers (Yes it is a luxury to have a cup of tea and not hear "mommy mommy!!" Agree! Going to the toilet without them yelling my name is a luxury lol!!) -- Now, I have decided to treat myself to luxury bags especially now that I can afford it. (Sucks this is happening at the most expensive time.. annoying!) But I have fallen in love with handbags in general, Chanel in particular - I am having the time of my life building a collection not only for myself but for when my girls are older. (Both love fashion, even the toddler) I have bought 13 bags in under 1 year, most new and a couple vintage pieces - BUT I love each and every bag. I have noticed though, through buying these bags - An ugly obsession did grow within me especially watching youtube videos of unboxing and immediately messaging my SA to get the same items that I just saw unboxed at fear I was missing out on the 'unicorn' item. I had to check myself immediately and remind myself to remain an individual and only get what YOU truly love. Do I stress it? No. For example, I wanted the black heart bag, didn't get it, didn't stress it. I wanted a Picotin, Birkin, Kelly, pretty much any Hermes bag in any bright colour (just not a neutral or black) but it seems like it is impossible, even with me purchasing other items from there (that I love). I doubt I will ever get an Hermes bag from my city and that's ok. The whole Hermes pressure is honestly a turn off anyway. No material item is worth stressing about, period. That's just the epitome of first world "problems" and not what is truly valuable in life. Fully agree.

I think that in time the luxury bag obsession will calm down and pass into something more normal and less obsessive. I think I see a future with a great diversity of interesting bags from up and coming designers. What I crave from youtubers these days is good styling ideas. The best influencers are those who have a point of view which is their own point of view. I take my hat off to HRH for being original.(Pretty much in everything she does and thinks!) I struggle to find style influencers who have talent. There are a lot of second tier influencers who are copying off other influencers, hence thousands of girls telling you to get a white button down shirt, a good pair of jeans, a beige trench coat and a plain white t shirt.

Highly agree with you. Although I personally still love nice designer bags I do think they are everywhere on social media and the crazy prices for less quality pieces turn me off from buying them these days. Hermes is now becoming the only brand I want to buy bags from, however the supply shortage also makes it harder. Anyways I think luxury is like what you and your mom have, just infuse style and pretty things in every part of your life. Not about the labels. I still think a good fitting bag (with the right style and color) elevates an outfit, just like any other accessories like shoes and jewelry. These days I like to watch travel or lifestyle vlog. I also like to watch ppl share newest fashion trends and stuff they buy (curated list for me). I also highly appreciate review videos on designer jewelry and bags (another curated thing for me) before I buy. :)

What i love doing now is using my Hermes bags to go to the stables which is really what they started out for. OK the Birkin hasn't made an appearance there yet but my Evelyne is a daily carry and has horse snot on it that just won't come off now. My favourite department in store is the equestrian section which is the quietest section and my SA is so happy someone actually wants to look in there rather than entertaining all the usual questions and hopeful hints 😂😂

LOL. While I tend to agree with you, I think some of the emotions people have attached to these things are less about the thing and more about not being able to have it. The concept of “being offered” the “opportunity” to purchase something is not something I can get on board with. It’s demoralizing. So while I love and can afford these items, I’m choosing not to go that route - for my own dignity.

I LOVE fashion since the day I was born. I think it is fun to decide who you are today and wear what makes you feel the most you on that day. Oh I have a wishlist and a visionboard and both contain some of fashion, but NEVER was I crying to not get or have something, because I know things come in life. And I am so grateful for every single thing I have, but I am not desperate for more. I work for it, I believe it, I manifest it, but God it does not determine my mood or how I feel. Fashion is fun and interesting. I am never ever jealous when I am on social media looking at all the girls that have items I love, I look at them as “wow love it! Good for her! It is possible for all of us”. I look at it, as a motivation and honestly I am so happy when I see someone have the same love for it. To me it’s art. Let’s enjoy it! 😊 I honestly don’t understand desperation for material things… I understand love and wants and needs, but not desperation for material things… I have realized I am great with detachment when it comes to material world and people not close to me, but anxious attachment when it comes to people close to me 😅🤣 Well I am working on that with Margarita’s helpful videos 🙏🏼

Good speech! Totally agreed. Building a life with values, a career or just generally accomplishing or building towards something is more fulfilling and human. We buy these overpriced goods but they don’t make us a better human. They should bring joy not heartbreak. Life is difficult enough.

Great video!! And I totally agree with all your insights. I’m an academic, and watching KZbin is my ‘free space’ from reading research papers ++ 😅 So I love watching bag-collection videos, luxury (and non luxury) fashion videos, tips, trends, hauls etc. And all of these videos I watch is exactly like you said; like swiping in a magazine ~ getting inspiration🥰 But I also love to watch content to ‘minimize’ the “perfect fashion”-videos. Minimalist videos, vlogs from the KZbinrs I follow, architecture videos, travel videos ++ 😅 And I’m the same in life; I love the CF from Chanel, it suits me, but it does not at all mean anything other than it being a great bag in my opinion. Other things in life are far more important, even though in may not always seem like it online💕 Never comment, but agreed so much by all you said so had to leave a comment. Loved all the videos with your mom too!

I just love your videos! I find your personality amazing. More young women that have to have a Chanel double flap in every color that comes out, needs to watch this video! I love handbags, and always have, but the people on KZbin that will do anything to get a bag at the prices now needs to just relax a little.

Oh I do... I love talking about bags and love watching them news and love talking about them, I tell some of my friends about them and they look at me like I'm insane. But desperation for anything material no... like I love it to enjoy but not desperation. Also would never play the hermes game. But it is sooo very true that it's not real life. Like preocupations are different in real life. I think it's great you've come out and say this... it may be needed to be emphasized specially in the luxury afficionados community.

Alex makes so many good points in that video...very erraric and brutal, but point was clear. You don't need to spend hundreds or thousands on a bag for it to be fashionable or lux. You can get cheap ones at a much lower price that are fresh, functional and also give a feeling of luxury.

Totally agree. I'm not saying that I won't get more bags, but I've never been one to be obsessed by them. And many brands now cost more than I'm willing to pay. Lately I've been watching videos on how to better use what I already have. I've been playing with so many ways to wear my Hermes scarves and am falling in love with them all over again. xoxo

If someone wants to throw a Chanel bag over a cool outfit, then it’s fine 🤷♀️ TBH I don’t think it’s that deep. Wear your bags how you want to. We shouldn’t obsess over getting a Kelly or Birkin, you can WANT one w/o going crazy over it. Sometimes “getting the bag” can feel like a fad. I’m all for capsule designer bags & just having F U N ☺️

I have always loved handbags. There are pictures of me as a child with my little crossbody and mini backpacks. I have a guess top handle bag my mom gifted me when I was 15 that was no more than $50...we didn't have money so I wasn't expecting a gift. I still treasure this bag. I still love handbags and I think I always will, but don't need to have them all. I also don't hunt them down. I use my items and they have to serve me. I agree with you. This is a hobby and it should be fun!

I like Birkins as much as anyone else, but my definition of luxury is fluid and for me, a beautiful Oroton bag is as stunning as an Hermes bag. And if I send an email to the Leather Satchel Company in Liverpool, they will give me the colour selection and style I actually want, they will not throw a bag at me and tell me to like it or lump it. Common as trash I may be, but that is me! If I had $20,000 in the bank I would much rather put it towards six weeks in Europe. Much better than a bag! Luxury is a highly fluid concept. If the fashion houses keep on lifting prices, they buyers will give up. Eventually. I already have. Now, even second hand prices are creeping up. So I am even losing interest in LV! I still enjoy unboxings! Thank you for the video! Have a brilliant week!

I certainly agree with a lot and I myself am over the thrill of the chase, I don’t get fomo because there’s always a new thing around the corner if you miss out on something. I also don’t need what everyone else has! Having said that, the reason I watch KZbin is to see what’s new and what’s coming out, firstly because I don’t have stores here in Adelaide so the videos show me things that I wouldn’t normally get to see, things that I used to go to magazines for and secondly because I like to research a product before I buy it wether it be makeup, fragrance or luxury so yes I still do enjoy unboxings as I watch KZbin for product information and I look at Insta for styling inspo. I personally don’t really care to watch the average persons life or have someone tell me how I should be thinking or feeling or doing something. I can think for myself and I like the mystery 🤷🏼♀️

Agree with everything you say! Times are moving on. Luxury feels a little vile right now. I don’t wear my luxury bags anymore. I wear bags I’ve made myself with a sewing machine, using fabrics I love and I get a MUCH bigger kick out of it. Influencers who haven’t caught up with the times are going to pay the price. I’m still up for watching an occasional unboxing but only on a channel that feels authentic and not braggy or icky. Channels such as yours! I love humble home reno channels the most or channels that advocate the simple life on a realistic budget. Much love from the UK 🇬🇧

I click on outfit styling, interior design (particularly for small spaces), and makeup styling. It's fun and spices up my wardrobe in a way. I stopped buying bags not only because they're crazy expensive now, but also because I'm genuinely content with the 3 that I have. They satisfy all my requirements. I don't really go for jewelry on youtube because I rarely rotate mine and usually go to smaller shops anyways.

Agree with you - So right about looking a bit neurotic. Whatever though, people like different things and I don’t judge them, it’s just not my vibe. I prefer bag reviews to unboxings - so after using a bag for 3 months, what do you think. Also like people showing new contemporary brands - not necessarily buying them. Can just be scrolling through some new collection and reviewing it - it’s fun to see new stuff and it’s harder work finding new designers so I appreciate KZbinrs who do that cos it feels like I see something new. Just seeing new Dior or whatever is kinda boring and I can do that myself.

Great point, Margarita. Agreed on the designer bags. I want to add/stress a finer point, if I may, which is that designer bags or not, it comes down to cultivating PERSONAL style, INDIVIDUALITY, celebrating one's unique beauty. The supposed "cool" girls/celebs (we all know who they are) on social media all look the same to me. Their so-called fashion "statement" conveys to me messages about conformity, lack of creativity and a retrograde elitism. Coco Chanel, a true fashion original, if ever there was one, must be rolling over in her grave. Cheers from Savannah, Georgia, USA!

Luxury is definitely supposed to be for fun. At the end of the day all of my luxury goods are there to serve a purpose- my wallets hold my cards and money, my handbags hold all the things I need throughout the day, my sunglasses protect my eyes from the sun, my watch can quickly let me know the time. I like using my stuff too- I hate the idea of obtaining cute expensive stuff and letting it just sit in boxes in my closets. Luxury should be enjoyed… if you haven’t purchased enough Twilly’s, SLG’s and fragrances for your SA to offer you a Birkin you shouldn’t cry on KZbin… just buy another cute bag and go about your day… I’m not worried about logos and status symbols… at this point if it’s good quality, serves its purpose and makes you happy, that’s all that matters :)

Never been desperate for a designer handbag and I don’t understand the reality’s behind not having a Birkin, Chanel, or any other designer bag. I watched the young lady’s video who was so distraught last year about not receiving a quota bag. I could not understand her distress. It may be more to her story about why she desperately wanted a Hermes bag but personally these luxuries bag are super expensive and if you can afford it and want to own one, have at it but it should not cause stress. Nothing is wrong with owning expensive handbags but if it affects your mental health maybe give it some deeper thoughts.

Dear Margarita, one thing that is imediately evident to anyone watching your videos is that you possess an inteligence that is way above average, both intelectually and emotionally, which is why I think you are able to stay so close to the fashion industry and not be sucked in by its more pernicious side. Even though you mostly talk about fashion, your wit is clear in the way you express your opinions, in how quick you are and in how you don’t take yourself too seriously (which takes a lot of confidence and self awareness). I think videos like the ones you mentioned are important in starting a conversation about the role “luxury” fashion plays in our lives, but it has gone way beyond an individual problem. There are hordes of people attaching their self-worth to how they are received or treated by some brand and that is NOT on these specific individuals that feel this way. This is a culture. A culture that includes or excludes people and decides how they will be valued and treated based on how much they spend. Don’t get me wrong, I too love Hermès, Chanel, Dior etc, but I buy things, as you, for FUN because I’m privileged enough to do so. For many people, that is not the case. These brands have become a sort of passport, a signal, a symbol that tells the world they have “made it”, they are important and SEEN now. This is f*cked up and, I repeat myself, this is not on individuals. It’s not JUST up to them to say “ok, if this is not fun, I’m not into it anymore”. This impacts how people are perceived and treated in life. It sometimes determines which doors open to which person. We, as a society, as a culture, MUST stop placing so much value in how people present themselves, especially concerning material possessions. To tell you a story that will perhaps illuminate where I’m coming from, last year I went to Europe and I missed my flight back because of a c0vid form (I didn’t have c0vid, I just filled the form out wrong, apparently). I had to go to a special office the airline had in the airport and before I could get any assistance, I got to talk to many people waiting in the queue to get service. Most of them had had the same problem I did. Most of the ones that were in front of me in line left the office and told me that there was no way around it, they had to buy new tickets. I went in having not much hope. But I’m white, thin, tall, I was well dressed and carrying a Birkin (which wasn’t the case for most of my fellow travellers). In less than five minutes, the airline employee solved my problem, charged a minimum fee and booked me on the next flight. This is one example, but I have lived through many. I’m sorry, but if the car you’re driving, the clothes you’re wearing, the bag you’re carrying and stuff like that impacts how you’re treated in life in general, it’s not as simple as saying “I’m just not going to care about it anymore”. It empowers us to say that and to choose that, but it’s not just up to the individual. It’s simply not. This whole culture must be changed.

I agree it is fun, handbag buying is my own little obsession and before I could afford expensive handbags and slgs I loved Accessorise handbags and little coin purses and when I was a kid my mum loved handbags but they weren't designer. I don't buy very, very expensive bags, it's to much stress to commit that much money to something I might not love enough in the end. I think that we should take social media out of the equation when spending money. I love watching bags unboxings and reviews because its fun to see the bags (so please do your Hermes unboxing) but I'm not cool and I don't have the figure or lifestyle to think for for a minute that a bag will elevate my outfit or impress someone. I just buy them because they are beautiful to me and make me happy when I use them, like a piece of jewellery . I also agree with your remark about influencers being like fashion magazines. I always read Vogue in my 20s even though I could barely afford the magazine let alone what they were advertising. Designer bags may be on the way out on social media but you can't take away the pleasure of owning a beautifully crafted bag from any brand, famous or not

I agree that lately there is a trend among some to downsize their handbag collection, perhaps due to the pandemic or all the price increases. I cut my own bag collection in half. When design houses are gifting all these influencers with bags, the bags lose appeal too. So I see the point of luxury bags being over due to over saturation, but I personally think if you love luxury handbags, then stick to what you love. Besides luxury stuff, I enjoy vlogs, especially mom life mixed with luxury. I also watch pop culture stuff, retro commercials, or historical stuff about royal families. No makeup tutorials, that’s for sure, lol.
