Abe, man... I remember seeing you and your full band play an absolutely incredible, FLOORING set (including that KILLER solo set of yours in the middle) in Akers Auditorium at Asbury University in the spring of 2012 and being truly blown away. It was evident to me then that you had an impeccable, John-Mayer-esque gift for writing tunes with complex, jazzy chords and full-bodied, nuanced instrumentation but making them just as accessible and relatable as any good pop music. I got a copy of Ninety Percent of Reality that night and still spin it every now and then to this day. That ridiculously good live performance and display of musicianship and songwriting craft was inspiring and left an indelible impression on me. But now, with this song...as a fan of yours and your music, this really, really bums me out, to be honest. I understand that you likely have goals of wanting to make it big (or at least make a comfortable living) writing and performing your music, and I could not understand that more. As a musician, that's the dream, is it not?! But man..this is, like, painfully generic, uninteresting pop music. It's kind of stunning. And I'm by no means a music business expert, but when I think about what you have to offer a potential audience and what distinguishes you as a musician, performer, and artist, it is not, not, NOT this. No offense (and when I say "no offense" I could not mean that more genuinely because I absolutely adore you as a musician), but you're not going to compete with other pop (secular or Christian) artists with stuff like this song/video (like, it's going to be lucky to get 2,000 views--let's be real). It's an insanely saturated, difficult-to-penetrate market (I would presume), and stuff like this doesn't even come close to playing to your biggest strengths (aside from your vocals [strong as always] and your ease in front of a camera). You're not a budding pop star ready to burst onto the scene with hip hop drum machine beats and I-V-vi-IV bangers. That's just not YOU. Rather, you're a virtuoso--a jazz-trained multi-instrumentalist musician's musician with a remarkable ear for melody and a penchant for lyrical storytelling who can--and DOES--write dense, satisfying, flat-out IMPRESSIVE songs that you can sink your teeth into--all without sacrificing an ounce of accessibility and catchiness. Ninety Percent of Reality, by my estimation, is JUST THAT. It feels like you being you, flexing your artistic muscles and flourishing. This song and video feel--and I could be wrong--like you trying REALLY hard to be something you're not as an artist. Would putting out more of the complex, interesting music you're so good at making garner more views/attention than the likes of "Cool Kid"? Maybe not...but at least then you'd be giving yourself a chance to maybe--just MAYBE--carve out a niche for yourself in the music industry where your strengths and the truest version of yourself are on full display and are fully appreciated and noticed. And again, I'm no expert, but I would think that your chances of doing that are just as likely as--if not MORE likely than--making a dent in the worlds of secular and/or Christian pop. Maybe I've misjudged your situation and your intentions; if you're content, satisfied, and motivated as an artist to pursue this kind of music and performance, then I truly wish you the absolute best and am rooting for you hard. But all I know is this: This song/video to me feels pandering, uninspired, and forgettable. But that live show seven years ago and the album I bought that night were literally UNforgettable.
