Do you know the most incredible? The lyrics of this song is a poem that was written 400 years ago by a Catholic religious mystic (San Juan de la Cruz) and speaks of the light of faith, Christ and the knowledge that illuminates "although it is night" Excellent comments Thank you very much for this moment.

This style is the old Spanish Copla not Flamenco find abou it, is racial music like Blues or Soul for Afroamerican. The spanish Blues is Flamenco, the Spanish Soul is copla.

Hi! "Aunque es de noche" means "Even in the darkness" and the song is based in a poem of a XVI century saint, san Juan de la Cruz. It was writen when he was incarcerated by the Inquisition as suspicious of heresy The poem was versioned firstly by another flamenco singer, Enrique Morente. The poem means that even in the darkness you can find God, which is depicted as a fountain or a river. The poem it's very extense so i'm gonna put a little: "I know well the fountain that flows, even in the darkness. That eternal flow is hidden, but I know to where it goes, even in the darkness. I don't know its origin since it doesn't have it, but all is originated by it, even in the darkness. There's not better beauty, and Heavens and earth drink from it, even in the darkness. It has not ground, and no one can go through it. It's clarity cannot be hidden and all ligth comes from it, even in the darkness...". So the final part, when she enters the cementery has some sense here meaning that everyone of us is gonna die and be part of an eternal and bigger flow.

Wow that was a magnificent explication thanks, actually the title literally means although it's night which means what you said, the darkness, and they were saying that they didn't understand her but I'm Spanish and some parts I even don't understand either because of the accent lol thanks for the translation anyways your comment is so underrated :)

She studied the career in college of Flamenco Music. Its a genre which comes from south of Spain. Her first album its all flamenco covers with really old songs but she made them pretty minimalistic just with claps and guitar which makes it so contemporary. I believe she just creates art. When you will listen a Rosalia song 15 years after you will still enjoy it. It doesnt happen with so many music on the radio that is mostly to listen and throw away pretty fast.

Bogeres, to answer your question, yes, this is Flamenco. And this song is actually her cover the same song by Enrique Morente, a famous Flamenco singer who passed away a few years ago. He took the lyrics of a poem by St. John of the Cross, a midievel monk who was imprisoned and tortured by his fellow monks for wanting to reform the Catholic Church to be more mystical and less focused on power and riches. During his imprisonment, he had a spiritual awakening and realized there was Love everywhere, "even though it is night time," which is what Aunque es de Noche means. Even in the darkness there's love and beauty. It's really a beautiful poem and song. To answer your question about Rosalia's influences, her main influence was the man who made her fall in love with Flamenco when she was 13: Camarón de la Isla. He is likely the most famous and beloved Flamenco singer that ever lived. In Flamenco you can date things as before and after Camarón. His voice has this raw emotion and power to it that gives you goose bumps. He gave his all when he sang. If you like that raw Flamenco sound, you should look him up. If you want his really soulful stuff, specifically do a search with his name and the words Siguiriyas, Soleá, Martinete...those are deep and general sad Flamenco rhythms where he really shines. Also, another favorite is a video where he sings Soy Gitano (I am Gypsy) at the Montreaux Jazz Festival and Quincy Jones introduces him. It's more upbeat, but also amazing. Love your reactions to Rosalía! ❤️💃

Hi! I looooved your reactions. This is my favorite Rosalia song. It is straight flamenco. Not "inspired" by flamenco. This is flamenco sung tango style (I think). (Flamenco can be sung in many different styles "palos"). This song is a version of the great flamenco singer Enrique Morente, who in turn adapted a very ancient poem. Yes, Rosalia studied flamenco singing. She knows the craft, studied the masters for years. She went to a prestigious flamenco school (Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya) and studied "Interpretation of flamenco" and was taught by her maestro "El Chiqui". (I have read somewhere that this school only admits one pupil per year). All this album "Los Angeles" is flamenco and it is beautiful. I think her next album "El Mal Querer" was actually the Final Project presented to graduate.

The lyrics of this video is a poem of the spanish San Juan de la Cruz, a religious mystic of 16 century. Because Spain is a Catholic country of Europe. The song it's about the light of Jesus the Saint Spirit, the Father (God) and the Virgen Mery. I think that all it's an allegory. And the video have got a lot of symbolism of the Catholic spanish religion. I'm from Spain, my English is so bad. Sorry. I really enjoy your reactions. Good for you!

Now, before this huge text (sorry xD), may I recommend to you another artist? Her name is María José Llergo. She was one of the names that rose along with Rosalía as "updaters of Flamenco". She has 2 music videos I highly recommend. One is "Niña de las Dunas" (Girl of the Dunes), that is a bit more traditional, but still the arrangements are kinda modern, and "Me Miras Pero No Me Ves" (You Look at Me But You Don't See Me) that is a bit more experimental, with bits of ambiental electronica and a bit darker and more tribal. Either of those, I think you may enjoy, since you enjoyed this "modern Flamenco" style and strong female voices. Although "Me Miras Pero No Me Ves" is my favourite. Yes, this is Flamenco, but not traditional. See, the issue with Rosalía's fandom is that they aren't regular Flamenco listeners. There would be nothing wrong in that if they weren't trying to have a degree of control over the Flamenco scene despite being the newcomers, it's very frustrating. So the thing is that these people, because they hear a guitar and her high pitch voice, they insist that it's "traditional Flamenco". It isn't. These cover songs (because her first album and this song, are just covers of Flamenco classics) are pop-like arrangements of those traditional songs. It's ok, nothing wrong with that, but only because it sounds "Andalusian" (Andalusia is where Flamenco originated) doesn't mean it's classical. The guitar arrangements are deemed to be lighter or to have more of a hook than traditional ones, that's why non-Flamenco people enjoy them. Again, nothing wrong with that, save for those who insist it is traditional. Her voice is amazing but it's not the best regarded in the Flamenco scene, for the strong, raspy or even husky type of singing is like the most beloved one (and it's also believed to be the oldest). Traditional Flamenco is more visceral and raw, and has those uncomfortable tempos that make you wonder if the rhythm was really "like that" because they don't always "feel right" (but I'm also a metalhead, so maybe that influenced my perception lol). She's great and yes, this is Flamenco despite what the haters say. She also tries to mimick the Southern accent and meh, she's not excellent at it, but it's better than mocking it as others do with us. I love this song, both the original and this version. And people should, in my humble opinion, just learn to enjoy things, and respect their roots. If you read this wholly, THANKS, and of course, great reaction, I love your reactions to Rosalía, so keep going, and I hope you give a chance to María José Llergo and react to her :) .

The lyrics of the song is a 16th century poem, written by the Spanish saint San Juan de la Cruz. He speaks of the fact that although it is night, because we are far from the light of God, there is a fountain, which is Himself, from which everything flows and whose light we will return to, even if it is now a dark night.

She has been inspired by classic flamenco artists like La Niña de los Peines. Flamenco by itself is a very emotional and expresive music, but Rosalía definitely shines at it. You can listen to Estrella Morente, Buika, Sandra Carrasco or Camarón for relatively modern and good flamenco singers. Rosalía's musical crossover and magical voice and interpretation are hard to match tho

Suggestion: You two guys should hear two greatests among the greatests..."Malvaloca" by La Paquera de Jerez. She is to flamenco like the great Mahalia Jackson to Gospel. Then, you should hear any "alegrías" by La Perla de Cádiz.

How well I know the source that flows and runs Although it is night That eternal fountain is hidden How good do I know where he has his hobby Although it is night In this dark night of this life How well I know by faith the cold fountain Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Its origin I do not know, because it does not have it But I know that every origin of it comes Although it is night I know there can't be such a beautiful thing And what heavens and earth drink from it Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Well I know that ground in it is not found And that none can wade it Although it is night His clarity is never obscured And all light of it is coming Although it is night And their currents are so mighty What heavens, hells water and people Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night The current that is born from this source Well I know he is so capable and omnipotent Although it is night The current that comes from these two I know that none of them precedes it Although it is night Here the creatures are being called And of this water they get fed up, although in the dark Although it is night In this living source of desire In this bread of life, I see her Although it is night In this eternal fountain is hidden In this living bread for giving me life Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Although it's night, ah ah ah ah Although it is night Although it is night Although it's night, ah ah ah ah Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night Although it is night
