David Niven was considered as the original Bond. I believe he turned it down. He was a British intel, and commando officer in WWII

Not exactly he was a behind the lines signal intelligence operator. In a unit called phantom intercepting german signals. Theirs more to suggest he did a bit more but he never spoke about it but we wont ever fully know what he did.
