The little Willow seems to be a good species for Bonsai. I hope everything will go well and it'll leaf out in spring!

Ive never seen a tree have a revert dormancy, that didn't leaf out all season but still managed to keep the branches alive. That's incredible!

Is it spring yet? How about now?! Haha! Sure felt like spring today! It was too cold to wear a Tshirt most of the summer, but I had one on in the sunshine today! That Willow is really neat! Can't wait to see what it does for you come spring! Will you plant a couple Oak on your back property? Let them go wild there. I love the leaf shape on them.

I was told that if a tree is base dominant, rather than apex dominant, it will inhibit growth of the upper branches if it gets suckers forming at its base. This may explain why the top didn’t grow but the suckers shot up like crazy.

I would have kept the ground hugging twig, personally. I have seen many willows where a branch breaks for example during a flood. That branch would survive and root into the river bed and next thing you know, spring arrives and you have growth coming off of it up to 2 meters long. I love willows - very vigorous.

That is one cool looking tree. Cool trunk on it. Great thoughts about pruning it, Dr. Saunders. Now I know why you are the head surgeon.

I personally liked the left slanting style a lot. Will be interesting to see what your plans will be in the comming years.

In a few years that fern will have a nice base to it almost like a bonsai fern. Just a thought.

A nice little tree with lots of movement! Will you be styling this in a weeping style?

I think I have to stop watching. The Apex was to the left, not the right. The tree has grown into what it wants to be (except for the lost year of growth). You're going against the will of the tree, the spirit of the tree. Often, great Bonsai are distinguished by their nose-thumbing, rather than adherence, to the 'rules.' But i's not my tree, and you are a superb artist, so, I hope it works out. But I can't watch .

Vertical trunks always grow thicker and are more dominant in nature. I'm just restoring the natural look back to the tree. Having the apex on the slanting part creates an unbalanced tree that often doesn't look peaceful to the viewer. Yes, most of the growth was on the left, but the tree will soon gain vigor and branching in the upright trunk and all will be well!! I hope!!!
