today we are doing a bookish experiment with tiktok! Can booktok recommend me the perfect book to read? how well does the algorithm know my reading tastes? First we investigate what the number say about the books i like and then i put all of my trust in the clock app to recommend me some good books. can't wait to read them all!

You created Storygraph for yourself. This is exactly what Storygraph does, and then uses ai to recommend similar books. It's also constantly improving and independent so that's nice.

The love triangle one gave me so much joy. Actually the Bloomsbury group are a well of complicated relationships and love triangles and love squares. My fave story is that Virginia’s sister Vanessa had a lover who lived with her and her husband called Duncan Grant. Duncan Grant was mostly gay tho and he also had another lover called Bunny/David Garnett. Duncan and Vanessa had a kid together called Angelica Bell but Angelica grew up thinking her dad was Clive Bell, Vanessa’s husband. Later, she married Bunny who wrote in a letter the day she was born that he was going to marry her some day WHICH… oh god. ("Its beauty is the remarkable thing … I think of marrying it; when she is 20 I shall be 46 - will it be scandalous?" Yes, David, it will be!) She also didn’t know he was her bio dad’s lover. 😬

The Monk by Matthew Lewis I definitely recommend. I read it as part of a gothic literature course at university. It was written by the son of a prime minister in England in the late 1700’s. He wrote it when he was a teenager. Its so good. The only way I can think to describe it is it is like reading a 1700’s telenovella. It’s ridiculous and surprisingly very easy to read.

new adult neeeds to exist, I wish more publishers used it so I can find books targeted towards “20 something year olds experiencing 20 something your old things”. YA is too young and doesn’t have what I’m looking for in literature and “adult” is usually a generation (or two) older than me and I just need a distinctive difference between “new adult/college age” (18-25/30) and “adult” (30+)

Such a fun video!!! You always have the most creative ideas for content and I love that! When you were saying “maybe I don’t like fantasy as much as I think I do”, it would be very interesting to see a video where you talk about your favorite books/ genres as a percentage of how many books in that genre you’ve already read! Just interesting to see that you tend to have liked a lot more general fiction than you thought you did and perhaps that’s because you like a higher percentage of the books from that genre than other ones even though you might tend to pick up other genres more!

The Sword of Kaigen is really good once you get through the first 100 pages. I wanted to DNF the book at page 70 because there was SOOO much infodumping and in-world terminology that I thought 'this just isn't good'. If you are into the adult fantasy booktube niche you hear a lot of people absolutely rave about the Sword of Kaigen and that's the only reason I kept going. Everything after those first 100 pages is among the best fantasy I've ever written.

i think a book you may like is alone with you in the ether. it's by the same author that wrote the atlas six (which i havent personally read) but it is a romance about 2 people who are struggling and find each other. i would consider it general fiction. it has a VERY loose (but very beautiful imo) writing style (sometimes dialogues aren't even in quotations) but has some beautiful conversations between the 2 main characters and it's a book i personally highly recommend! a small trigger warming: it deals with topics of mental illness and addiction which can be triggering for some

Dostoevsky did consider himself to be writing in a style of “fantastic realism,” so, hey, you know, Crime and Punishment is kinda fantasy too. But, to be serious, I know Dostoevsky can have some very long and tedious conversations in his books, but some really emotional and dramatic stuff goes down towards the end of the book. Also, I was wondering, and apologies for asking, but would you be interested in doing a video comparing Crime and Punishment (or any book(s)) in Dutch with an English translation? I was just wondering how similar or different the book feels in each translation, or how the different translations are able to make the same effect.
