@@YourAssAintSafe why don't the cities simply make main roads wider even when there's space to do so? Because it's irrelevant how wide a particular road is, the limitations are uniform across all road grid. Just because there's a fast path from A to B doesn't mean that roads around A and B can handle increased amount of traffic. Tunnels are built according to complex traffic modelling, and just because you CAN build a tunnel doesn't mean that you SHOULD. In fact, shorter routes decrease the capacity of the road grid, a shorter road can physically fit less cars. And when one road starts to clog up it starts a chain reaction that includes more and more roads around it. Thus making people drive a longer route often DECREASES average ride time.

The reason we have surface roads is because they are one order of magnitude cheaper to build than tunnels or bridges. The reason there are no more tunnels isn't because nobody thought about it, it's an economical reason. Somebody has to pay for these. So be prepared for tolls, taxes increase, have some ads displayed in your center console or maybe some Netflix-like subscription service. Selfdriving cars will do more for productivity than these tubes will. This test is kind of pointless since it's a private lane for a single car vs a public road full of traffic. Doing the same test with the same amount of cars taking both paths would yield a different, more even result - Differing depending on the allowed distance between cars in the tunnel. I know the "They can dig infinite tunnels" argument, but we know that adding more lanes to a road doesn't always ease congestion. I think the same rules apply to the tunnels. We'll have to see.

@@sakru100 it just means you can add more tunnels than you could lanes, but also at a greater cost. The dynamics of why more lanes aren't always the solution also applies the tunnels, unless you build an overkill amount, at which point cost becomes too much of a factor. As I said, we'll see. My main point is that this test is heavily skewed and doesn't tell us anything about the actual effectiveness of a tunnel system with actual traffic.
@DeeSnow975 жыл бұрын
@@MartilloWorkshop The whole point of the entire Boring Company is to drive down cost. They're considering main arteries of 25 lanes, and more importantly a seamless highway-like system instead of traffic lights (3D allows you to sidestep that problem). And yes, you need a ton of tunnels for that, that's why the Boring Co. builds its own TBMs, with the express goal of making tunnels easy, fast, and cheap to build. As for the traffic dynamics, the problem is usually not that there aren't enough lanes. Traffic lights are a much bigger problem, 2D intersections slow down traffic more than anything else.

@@MartilloWorkshop We won't have to see, you are absolutely right. Road tunnels are not a new invention, and just like highways they don't easy traffic, they just move congestion elsewhere. This is just a ridiculous publicity stunt, the tunnels cost per mile is literally the same as normal tunnels the difference is the ones Elon is drilling are freaking tiny and just not going to be viable for actual movement of vehicles. Real tunnels cost ALOT because they need to be large and need to have various safety features that are included in that size. This tunnel if 1 Tesla broke done or crashed/caught fire it would suffocate everyone caught in the congestion extremely quickly. The point of engineering is to make things as unbreakable as possible, but Elon's projects almost all have integral massive single points of failure that have been well addressed. @@AsthmaQueen Please explain how there would be congestion if a car somehow crashed/caught fire? You know electric vehicles have reverse? An amazing concept I am sure, but it is true. Also a Tesla could reverse at 127 mph down the same tunnel it did 127 mph forward in... that would be weird. Also since all the cars are on autopilot without drivers mucking things up they would all move at the same time clearing the tunnel in a very short time. On another note, the typical TBM tunnels at a speed of 60 feet per day. Boring company TBM 2.0 is estimated up to 850 feet per day. You might notice a difference. Granted the size of the tunnel is also smaller reducing the amount of impact the digging causes and the waste material removed. They also use modified Tesla Model X cars to haul 125 ton sleds of stone from the tunnels.

This test is hardly comparable - the bored tunnel only used by your test car whilst the roads were live servicing the city of commuters. The bored tunnels for traffic are an amazing idea for increasing speed for the main leg however the main bottlenecks will be the entry and exit points, with this type of system they will likely be massive choke-points on entry and exit unless there is some very clever planning mechanism and also lots of lanes of these bored tunnels.

Va'kion Inya Are you supposed to accept anything someone smarter than you says even when they gain financially from your believing them? The answer is no. The Boring Company built a tunnel underground without speed limits and that’s it. It’s either going to become just another road that will be subject to the same traffic and use as an above-ground road or it will be limited to a select group of wealthy customers who pay for the use of what is essentially a private road. I’m guessing the latter unless they significantly change the design. Or the whole thing will just flop.
@ChessDownUnder5 жыл бұрын
@@sulrana1812 I am not discounting the efforts of The Boring Company, I am just stating that this test video is not really a fair comparison - to compare a test tunnel with a single car versus a live city with real traffic, that is a very loaded test. IMHO this approach of boring tunnels would be more suitable to high-speed delivery of cargo/shipments rather than a mass-consumer play for commuting, i.e sending shipping containers across between cities at high-speed, rather than using large trucks on the road or being limited to shipping to/from shipping docks. If we can get logistics trucks off the main roads then that in itself is a massive win and at-scale will do wonders to lower congestion.

It's quicker to exit the tunnel than to get into it, so it'd be unlikely (but not impossible) that you'd have to wait for the tunnel to be clear before going down. A 2 lane, etc road where cars can go bumper to bumper can fit more cars than this tunnel, but the idea is that it's completely offset by how much faster cars travel through the tunnel.
