Boy, are we spoiled! She had one tiny bathroom with only one toilet in it, sink was in the kitchen, as was a large tub for washing laundry and humans! she never owned a car and delivered all her eight babies at home in the tenement building that was heated by coal in an old cast iron cook stove !!! Boss, I have to admit I was so impressed with your ice box idea in your upstate NY cabin that I went and built one in my workshop, just for power outages and/or SHTF emergencies. I remember back in the 70's at my Dad's NH cabin, we used an antique ice box whenever we were staying there. Beautiful piece of craftsmanship but like you said, not really great at keeping groceries chilled in the summer months. Dad always kept the beer in a separate metal Coleman cooler. Priorities!

Just subbed. Nice channel. We'll be binging. We quickly tired of the excess LP gas usage in winter. Our place is so small that our wood stove caused the frig to run constantly. Especially when we were cooking. And so I cut a hole in an outside wall of our kitchen. I then mounted a small (broken down) apartment sized frig outside the hole. Using a hole saw, I cut a 2" hole in the outside rear of the unit and another on the door front. I put a tiny 12v fan over each hole and connected them to separate thermostatic switches. The door fan turns on drawing air through the outside hole when the frig gets too warm. The back fan kicks on to pull air through the front hole when the temp gets too cold. There are a couple of things that I'd do differently (like flappers on each hole and full sized frig) but for the most part, its pretty darn sweet.

My panels are over 6 feet long and 4 feet off the ground & keep the snow cleared under them. Winter configuration is facing South and completely vertical so snow does not collect on them & they always charge with a minimum of maintenance. Just food for though for a future electric freezer! I use chest freezes, set at a low temperature to act as both a refrigerator and freezer. I bought 3 of them. I did a week long test, and powered them on solar, and LiFePo4 batteries. They was far less power loss then from using regular refrigerators! I set things to freeze at 1.3, of up to 5, and it acts as a refrigerator at .6 of up to 5 The best part is that you do not lose your cold air when you open them up!

Thanks for the video JC. I have been off grid and on solar for more than 20 years out here in California. My advantage is that I get a lot of sun year round, but be warned: A solar system's weakest part is the batteries. They are expensive and they have a limited life. As far as refrigeration is concerned, I started out with an ice chest, then I bought a Sun Frost electric refrigerator which turned out to be the worst purchase I have ever made in my 77 years of living - that thing was very expensive and a complete pile of trash. These days, regular refrigerators are quite efficient and they work well with solar. The Sun Frost lasted me less than a year, but fortunately, I bought a regular Whirlpool freezer on top and refrigerator on the bottom along with a chest type freezer and they have been running for me the last 17 years. I have 10, 230 watt panels which will last well beyond 20 years and they produce far more electricity than I can store. I started out with 8 Trojan 350 amp hour lead acid batteries and my panels would completely charge them before noon - the rest of the day, they would only trickle charge them. My current battery bank lasted about 3 years but when one cell goes bad, it compromises the whole battery bank. The "experts" say that when replacing one bad battery, you must replace the whole bank. This is technically correct because I would have 7 somewhat used up batteries and one fully new battery that will be dragged down by the other 7. That is correct, but it is also ridiculous - one bad cell and you are looking at a $4000 expense. There are now lithium batteries, but as far as I'm concerned, their cost is prohibitive and they, also, have a limited life. So, like I said, solar is OK - it will work for you, but it is far from being perfect.

Great video Boss . I remember that outdoor cooler when you built it at the New York Cabin . The problem with a propane fridge and freezer is that you have to vent it . Unique do sell a 12 volt fridge . MBF have one and they love it . No need for an outside vent . Doesn't take much power to run it and you don't need a gigantic solar power set up to run it . It's also good for people who have a cabin and visit it on the weekends . Fridge is always cold and it's free power . Another good reason not to build so close to the ground . A higher building allows you to store items underneath . If you wanted to keep a cooler stay colder longer than people should do what you did and line the inside with bubble foil . That was in another of your videos . Many homes in my area have a cold room built in under the front porch . Problem is if that porch is facing South it doesn't get that cold . Mine faces North and I put all kinds of things in there .Take care .

Some technical info on your camper refrigerator, I noticed that you didn't have a venting circulation system on the one in the kitchen for the operating flame.. I have owned two slide-in truck campers and at times have traveled under low hanging branches that had raked the roof top vent completely off the top of the camper, which I had to do a temporary fix by covering the opening in the roof with a piece of plywood and roofing cement, which caused the refrigerator to not work nearly as well. I still have both of these refrigerators and had one sitting on my back porch filled with cokes or pepsi's, with no enclosure of any kind and still it performed poorly. I talked to a repair tech and was informed that the oblong coil system had to have a natural drafting system in order to work properly, I told him that the entire rear portion of the unit was open to get all the venting possible, he replied that still air is not enough for optimum operation of the unit Whether he is right or wrong, I have no idea, but he said that there has to be a flue like system such as what the camper had, ie: a lower outside vent with a covered roof top opening. The refrigerators that I had will work with 110 volt ac, 12 volt dc or propane, just for kicks I am going to do some kind of enclosure for the one on back porch to see if it does make a difference, I will let you know one way or the other. And your comment about those refrigerators is spot on the mark, the only thing that can go bad is either the main gas control unit or in most cases will be the thermo-couple itself.

My fridge is on;y needed during the warm months and the windows are open. Some fridges will NOT work properly if you add a flu to them. The critical thing I found with these is they NEED to be PERFECTLY LEVEL to run properly. They are really finicky in that regard. That may or may not be your issue but it's worth checking.

Good ol' Yankee ingenuity! Love it : D The last storm we had with high winds had me thinking I may need to get a few chunks of ice outside because we lost the power. It came back on before too long, so I didn't have to improvise. I never panic over lost electricity because I always have alternatives (YI ;) Thinking spring lately & watching some great tips on vertical gardening (little space to work with). Nice to see Tildy... puppies at some point? Enjoy that swivel & God bless.

You will love solar power. I have the same size chest freezer that runs on 12/24V DC. I converted a 7cu ft chest freezer to a refrigerator by swapping out the thermostat. BOTH of those and an inverter run off two 280W panels and some golf cart batteries, with power left over for the coffee maker, toaster, and a small electric heater or even a small window ac unit when it's sunny and the batteries are topped off.

Dbcm859....Cool. Would you mind sharing the brand & model of the fridge,inverter, solar panels? I am planning similar set up. Thanks
@dbcrn8594 жыл бұрын
@@joes8275 Do you mean the freezer? SunStar ST-9CF. The refrigerator was converted from an Idiyls 7 cu ft freezer. The inverter is a Cotek SK1000-124, and the panels are Trina 280W (sorry, don't know the model number). I know you didn't ask, but the charge controller is an EPEver 4215BN, with the MT50 monitor/keypad. Some of these are out of production and have been replaced by other models.
