Been a trucker for 40 + years and when Ben mentioned the smoke in the yard and the 2 AM departure it hit home with me. I don't know what it is but leaving a yard in the middle of the night when nobody is on the road is a feeling I'll always love.

Takes me back to my youth. 1956 Kenworth with custom built 290 Cummims with a 6 speed main, a 4 speed aux AND 2 speed rear ends. My uncle built it from several wrecks and was the truck I learned to drive on. The first year I just rode around in it and help work on it. Second year I spend learning how to drive it, but never alone. Third year I went out alone but he always came along with his new truck hauling two load to the same area. Fourth year I was on my own. We retired the Kenworth, I got his "new" 358 Peterbuilt and he bought a new "A" Model Kenworth. It lead to a more than 40 year career in trucking.

@@TheBostonTruckerRalph is right on. Been working on early houses for almost 25 years. I still get excited about it. The jobs are a thrill few can understand; I get lost in the awesomeness of the tools and material. In my 20’s I dreamed of being a trucker. Used to talk with them on the CB at night on long rides. Now I settle for an old 7.3 truck to get my turbo whine fix. I like to shut off the stereo to listen to it whining. Living on a state road near a sharp corner I know many of the trucks just by the engine and brake noises and driver styles and still love the chicken light show from the tricked out rigs on 84 West bound driving home at night. My wife thinks I’m a lunatic but big rigs hold a real mystique. One of these days I’m going to own one just to ride around in. Old machines are simply awesome. Thanks for the videos.

This is glorious. It's an absolute joy listening to Ben talking so knowledgeably and so passionately and so modestly, too. My dad was a lorry driver here in the UK and I used to love going with him in the wagons, driving through the night in the late 1960s. The first vehicle I ever drove on the road was a Guy Big J4T with a 40' York van trailer, down the M5 in the middle of the night when I was 8. There is a real romance and sense of adventure and I totally understand how people have what can only be described as a love affair with old lorries/trucks.

This was one of the best videos I've watched in quite a while. It shows that both of you are passionate about these old rigs. Ben seems like quite a guy to drive for. Anyone still paying to have their fleet doors hand painted not only cares about their equipment, but who they have in the seat as well.

Wow, this brings back great memories. I drove a Mack DM with a 5x4 for 5 years until the company sold it. Absolute blast! Thanks for the memory revival. My first license to drive commercial trucks was called a Chauffeurs License and then they changed to the class system. Thanks again be well and be safe.

I'm a young guy in my mid 30s and I absolutely love when I get to drive my 72 kw with a detroit 8v71 and a 5-4 there's nothing like it and all I can think of is the men it took to drive real trucks. Now new truck are great but as he said they don't have a soul. Keep up the great videos I love seeing them

That was fantastic. I've watched a lot of "how to" transmission operation videos over the years, but this one the best...by far. Retired now, but I still love looking at trucks and viewing footage of anything to do with them. Luckily I knew what was going on with those levers as I used to drive an R Model Mack with the 5x3 Triplex box back in the day. Congratulations again. 🙂

I havnt been able to watch through at work here. But I keep coming back and catching a few minutes.. Great vid. The old school thing? Yea. In the 70s most of my friends were Owner Operators or mechanics.. or related by family. Yes... you became a trucker because you loved it. When I was a small child my dad got a load of top soil. Only used half and the rest of the pile sat there. Me and my bro Bob were out there on the pile with our trucks and dozers excavating that pile for years. And the leavin out at 2am thing... yup. Theres a bunch of 70s music that brings me back to the 70s running out of a paper mill in Uncasville Conn. based out of Jersey... Started trucking in 1977....Ended trucking in 07. The last 12 years running a lowbed... This guys the real deal... didnt think there were many left judging by what I see on the road these days. Eld? Hahaha... in my day you needed to learn how to juggle 2 or 3 lig books... eld my azz...

I smiled the whole video! I learned on a Brigadier and drove a 73 Mack for dad. I currently have a 359 Pete with Air, it keeps my shoulder nice and cold..LOL ..what a great video and an awesome guy. Respect even more when he was talking about his guys and mentioned how lucky he was to get the guy when his job closed it's doors. Explained the shifting and old school trucking in a most elegant way. (Also noticed neither of you used the clutch, true masters of the shift!) This video needs to go into the Smithsonian for future generations..
