The reason for the EU fenders is spray! As you noted, in the US it's all about not damaging your own truck, in the EU the fenders are to prevent you throwing rocks at other vehicles and to avoid you creating huge clouds of spray in the rain. You forgot to mention little detail about the mudguards. When it rains, the Peterbilt creates a wall of mist behind the truck, which is great fun when driving next to or behind such a truck and see almost nothing. The Scania has anti-spray mud flaps on the mudguards, which almost completely eliminates that fog when you drive behind it. If you look closely, you can see the studs of those mats sticking into your mud flaps. The anti-spray mud flaps are required by law in Europe for trucks over 7.5 metric tons. And what about safety? Does the Peterbilt, just like the Scania, also have.. Driver Assistance Systems (DAS) like... *Airbags *ABS *Lane Departure Warning Systems (LDWS) *Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) *Advanced Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS) That's also the reason why Europeans always read the RTFM! (Read The F*cking Manual) :p

Its like comparing a Sherman tank to an Abrams. It gets even better when you compare the prices. $200,000+ for the Peterbilt? Bruce, you've just explained why, as a long-suffering trucker, I never want to drive a US truck again! I had the "bad luck" of driving a "show truck" for a short time... it was over 30 years ago, I can't remember what kind, I think it was a "Kenni" with such a flat cabin that with my 6.4" I had to duck my head on every bump to avoid hitting the ceiling, and the thing had a long gear stick that was as "crisp and precise as a wooden spoon in pudding and with the 360 hp you couldn't even pull a 1-axle trailer up the hill without losing speed. BUT also how CHEAP the quality of the manufacturing is. Here in Europe there are certain standards that have to be met, for example the tail lights. The "radiation surface" of the tail lights was prescribed, where they had to be located etc.!! A little taster?! if the lights are more than 49 cm (about 1 foot and a half) from the outside edge, side markings must be applied, but in the US the thing is glued together and then dipped in a paint bucket.... done

As a UK truck driver, I always thought the benefits of the bullnose was power and space, because you could fit a massive engine under the hood in front of you, instead of squeezing it under the cab, and the long chassis gives more space for the drivers living area. So to hear the Scani is more powerful AND more efficient AND has more space AND is safer AND has more creature comforts AND looks better (IMO), was such a surprise! Other than that small area between the back of the seat and the bunk, what is the point of it being so long? And you can’t even stand up in it! It’s not even like you can say it’s for getting under low bridges, because the tall stacks, and the trailers are higher than the truck, why aren’t you taking advantage of all this space, I thought everything was supposed to be bigger and better in Murica, in this case it’s just longer, WHY?! You even specked the Scania with a longer frame for no other reason than it looks more American, in the UK we run 6X2 because we can run up to 44 Tonnes, but without the frame extension. In the UK, the spec of truck you have would also have a crane fitted behind the cab, all run from a PTO off the engine. You talk about all the space you have in the frame as a benefit, and I’m sure mechanics would agree, it makes it easier to work on, but it is just wasted space, how much steel frame is needed to make a truck look American? and for what benefit? I know I’m biased but I can’t even get on board with the looks of the thing, I can’t get past being able to see all the rivets holding the sheet metal together, it just gives it a “made by your local tin basher” look that the rest of the automotive industry left behind a very long time ago. Even farm equipment is getting body panels that give them a modern sleek look. If I gave you a steel box riveted together, with complex internal mechanisms and asked you to make it look good, and you gave me back a steel box with the rivets still visible, but you covered the mechanism in paint and bolted on a few shiny bits while telling me it looks good because they are polished stainless not chrome, I would ask you why it still looks like a box held together by rivets, and why you spent so much money on stainless if you have to tell me it’s stainless for me to appreciate it? If I got given a truck I couldn’t stand up in, I would quit, just like I would quit if I was told I had to ask my customers for tips to pay for my own healthcare! Well done Bruce for standing up and showing how the “American dream” is all propaganda, peddled by the people who make their money by stiffing their hardworking employees by giving them the least they can get away with, to make the biggest profit for themselves!

(3:50) Not projector headlights, those are reflectors. (5:00) You can spec with either FAI (front air intake) or HAI (high air intake) which would be mounted high up on the right side behind the cab, this means the air deflectors have a cutout with a grille for the air intake and the air filter would be located behind the cab. (6:25) The sideskirts also do a lot for aerodynamics in addition to side underrun protection. on lots of european trucks (tractors mainly) there is a rubber lip on the top of the side skirt which reduces drag even more (good for fuel economy). (20-ish?) I will add that Scania also does passive regeneration continuously (the soot is oxidised with the help of nitrogen dioxide), if you're doing long hours idling or low load scenarios and the filters start to clog and the differential pressure across the filters (there are two) goes too high the EMS will start a forced regeneration. (22:10) Never lay under the truck with only the air suspension raised, would not advise. (22:10) Easiest way to replace the filter is to remove the rubber strap holding in the air intake pipe, and then removing 4 screws to remove the top cover on the air filter housing, allows you to pull the filter straight up. (24:23) Scania only has a synchro on the splitter gear on the newer transmissions (G25/G33/G38) to reduce drivetrain loss. This is made up for by having axle brakes on both main shaft and layshaft to synchronize the rotational speed. Another interesting part of the GW-box is that they do not have a seperate reverse gear but instead two planetary gearsets at the output shaft that handles both range and reverse. This allows the gearbox to have 8 reverse gears and 14 forward gears. Suggest you try to get a copy of Multi which is the workshop manual software, lots of really good function descriptions of most components on the vehicle alongside the repair manuals. mvh mechanic Scania.

Problem with manufacturer specific parts is availability. Volvo/Mack for example, when you breakdown after 8pm and before 7am or something around those hours, you're done until the next day, if it's on a friday then you're done until Monday, unless you can get very lucky and find someone who has the part you need. That's where several branded parts on every truck becomes a good thing because people tend to keep those parts in stock.
@BadAndUgly2 сағат бұрын
American trucks are built more like hotrods with many different manufacturers providing all the parts. Probably has worked fine all these years but with the drawback of fitment issues. Components, wires and hoses blocking access to the thing you need to replace or reach. It may also be an issue on the Scania too but as Bruce has mentioned in earlier videos, each thing has its own place and is more organized. Both trucks have their own kind of charm and it is up to the buyer to decide on which one to choose in the end.

in europe, and especially germany you are not even allowed to drive without mudguards if you do not have a trailer behind it (costs you quite a bit of money), if you drive solo you MUST have mudguards because of the splashing water for the person behind you. There are trailers that can break the mudguards or in a strange situation, that is why the upper part is removable. A tip regarding your connection to your trailers is that if you use quality LED lights, those can be powered with anything between 9-36v, so you can use the standard 24v Scania outlet as long as it is not powering EBS/ABS. My guess is that the American producers of trucks will combine their efforts to get rid of this Scania as soon as possible. Scania wipes the floor with their products and to match it they will have to invest so heavily that they will get in serious financial trouble. As an example I only have to mention Toyota crushing the Big 3 on the carmarket, despite all effort from the formerly mentioned 3 to run them into the ground. Once a bunch of American truckers can get a real taste of how that thing rides and hauls there is no stopping the revolution.

The US manufacturers have so many contacts in the state, senate and so on. What would probably happen is that they will ban any competition from the outside and keep going at the same direction as they do now. I know, because we could deliver parts of better quality and to lower price from Norway to USA, and the local manufacturer got the authorities to accept a local rule that said the part had to be made locally. When doing things that way, USA have no incentive to make any big leaps in technology.

I've been following Bruce's KZbin channel since he bought the first red Scania truck. I usually read almost all the comments on every episode he posts about Scania trucks. My summary from reading comments from our American friends is that they would be more than happy to test and drive a Scania truck that Bruce has right now. It would be a great advantage if Scania could get several Scania trucks R770 V8 over as demo trucks so American truck drivers can get to know what it's like to drive with a trailer and Scania truck connected together. And at the same time show all the functionality that is on the outside of the truck and on the inside of the Scania truck. The only way to be able to sell Scania trucks to American truck drivers in the USA is for them to test drive the truck. If I had worked as a sales representative at Scania, I would even invite some truck drivers from the USA to the Scania factory in Sweden. Where they can get a tour of the factory and then test drive the various Scania trucks at the demo centre. 🇺🇲🇸🇪

When i was NYC, it's like going back in time. It's so bad. Dirty trams, tram stations, no proper security, no proper fences to avoid people getting pushed/falling. All trams are manually driven, no automation. Supposed to be one of the richest cities in the world. pfft. American regulations primarily restrict the length of the cargo, while European regulations limit the total length of the truck and trailer combination. This difference explains why European trucks are often designed with cab-over-engine configurations for better maneuverability, while American trucks favor long-nose designs. In the US, truck speeds are generally less restricted than in Europe, where stricter speed limits for trucks (80-90 km/h) often require passenger cars to overtake them more frequently. European highways also tend to be narrower, more mountainous, and winding, with incoming traffic in certain areas, as well as more extreme weather conditions. These factors explain features like covered wheels, which reduce mist, snow, and debris, and side skirts on both trucks and trailers. Side skirts improve aerodynamics, enhancing fuel efficiency, and also increase safety by preventing pedestrians and smaller vehicles from getting under the wheels. Additionally, the higher positioning of truck cabs in Europe enhances visibility, which is particularly beneficial in mountainous or winding regions. Another key difference is the focus on axle count and weight distribution. In Europe, stricter weight limits (typically 40 tons) and axle regulations require the load to be distributed across more axles. This contrasts with the US, where higher weight limits allow for longer trailers with fewer axles. European length restrictions also drive the use of shorter but taller trailers to maximize cargo space, while in the US, longer and lower trailers are common, providing greater overall capacity.

Different sizes of retarding unit, some rigs can have 2 Double hydraulic steering system Two double air compressors with triple amount of air tanks Two rotor clutch Cameras and monitors instead traditionall rear view mirrors And many many other items, standard trucks have about 4 pages of items in small print, special orders have endless number of options.

Hello Bruce Wilson, I stumbled across your KZbin channel, and let me tell you, your videos struck a chord. You talk about trucks in a way that resonates deeply, and I couldn’t help but feel like I had to say something. You see, I immigrated to America from Europe at the age of 28. This country became my home-whether I liked it or not-but not without its share of frustrations. Coming from Europe, I was used to a different world of trucking. Trucks there were designed with purpose-built around the driver, not the other way around. Comfort, safety, and efficiency came first, with the truck itself as the tool to transport goods. But when I came here, I was shocked by what I found: outdated designs, clunky technology, and an industry that seemed to care more about squeezing profits than supporting the people behind the wheel. Let me paint you a picture: In Europe, I drove trucks with air-driven cabs, soft clutches, and semi-automatic transmissions-machines that worked with you, not against you. But in America? My first experience was with an ancient Kenworth that felt like it belonged in a museum. The clutch was a workout, the transmission was a nightmare, and the cab was so cramped and uncomfortable it felt like punishment. And yet, here I was, told I needed driving hours for a commercial license as if I hadn’t already driven a lifetime’s worth of miles. What really floored me was the mentality. I remember driving a Mack dump truck in Canada-one of those half-cab beasts that rattles your bones and leaves your spine begging for mercy. Back in Europe, we used to joke that a Mack truck “kills three drivers before it dies.” Turns out, that wasn’t much of a joke. These machines aren’t built for drivers; they’re built for some profit-driven agenda that doesn’t give a damn about the person sitting behind the wheel. And yet, in this country, people worship these trucks like sacred cows. It’s almost religious. I’ve seen drivers defend these outdated machines as if their lives depended on it. Why? Because that’s the narrative we’re fed: “We’re the best. We’ve always been the best. Don’t question it.” Well, let me question it. What’s so great about driving a truck that punishes you every mile? What’s so great about clinging to technology that the rest of the world left behind decades ago? I eventually got my hands on a Volvo with a soft clutch and better handling-a breath of fresh air compared to the torture devices I’d been driving. But even that wasn’t perfect. The truck still had Eaton rear ends, which caused more headaches than I care to remember. The fact is, even the "better" options here are a compromise. Why are we, in the so-called land of innovation, stuck in the past? Why don’t we have the same options as drivers in Europe? Why don’t we see air-lifting cabs, fully integrated air suspension systems, and transmissions that don’t feel like they’re punishing you for daring to shift? Are we so wrapped up in this capitalist race for profits that we’ve forgotten how to prioritize progress? And that brings me to the bigger issue: capitalism. Look, I’m not here to tell anyone what to believe. If you like capitalism, good for you. But let’s be honest about what it’s doing. It’s not about innovation or quality; it’s about profits-profits over people, over safety, over progress. We’ve convinced ourselves that we’re the best, but all we’re doing is putting lipstick on a pig and parading it around like it’s a beauty queen. The rest of the world sees through it, even if we don’t. Bruce, I see you poking at this in your videos-carefully, diplomatically. You don’t outright say it, but I can tell you’re frustrated too. You’re asking the questions that matter: Why don’t we have better options? Why don’t we demand more from the industry? Why are we, the drivers who sacrifice so much, stuck with trucks that don’t respect us? I used to dream about American trucks as a kid, watching movies that romanticized the open road and the freedom of the driver’s life. But the reality was a slap in the face. There’s no freedom in driving a machine that fights you every step of the way. There’s no pride in being fed propaganda about how great we are while we lag behind the rest of the world. And don’t get me started on school buses. Those things are a disgrace. We’re still sending our kids to school in vehicles designed a century ago, with no regard for safety or comfort. It’s a joke-and not a funny one. If we can’t even prioritize the safety of our children, what does that say about us as a society? Bruce, your channel is a breath of fresh air because you’re not afraid to show the cracks in the system. You’re not here to sugarcoat anything, and neither am I. We need voices like yours to challenge the status quo, to remind us that we can do better-and that we must do better. So thank you for what you do. Keep pushing, keep questioning, and keep being a voice for the drivers out there who deserve more. And to anyone reading this who feels offended-good. Maybe it’s time we all took a long, hard look in the mirror. Sincerely,

Im a British guy. I'm not a truck driver but I like trucks. I see Scanias and trucks like the Scania on our roads every day. Never seen a Peterbilt before, but that thing is seriously cool af

@@vtecbobby In Denmark we have a few american trucks on the road (don't know what brands though) I see them once in a while.. I drive a Scania my self, but it's no where as new or good looking as this one 🙂

@@dennislittau6320 i assume some are kenworth or such. But peterbuilt looks cool, i have to admit. But it has nothing to do with trucks :D I've been driving Merc, volvo, iveco and scania, and scania is absolutely the best. Volvo comes second. Swedes really know how to build trucks.

Easy pick is Scania. The visibility for drivimg is that good, and optimal cabin size for ferrys and ships. Scania has quality fridge and you can have it wth anything workplace needs. I really can't see EU ever going back to oldschool look with hood.

Fenders like on the Scania should be on all semi-trucks. The absence of them is not only a hazard, it is one of the reasons truck drivers are hated by many people.

The reason I think most American truckers hate cabovers, is because American companies haven't really perfected their cabs to fit that type of truck. I think European cabovers are a lot better than American ones, because we have been driving them for a very, very long time and the truck manufacturers over here have really kinda perfected the cabover design. I think, if an American trucker had to drive a Scania for a week and then compare it to an American cabover, they'll probably prefer the Scania when it comes down to practicality and driving experience (Except for the transmission not being manual of course) Not saying American trucks are bad, oh no. I love how they look and they have their own unique way of doing things, but overall, the more practical truck is probably the Scania

Wow I never thought I would take a like into a cab over after driving a hood for years. But after watching your videos, that looks like a better truck in practically every way and not just a little bit.

Close your market and restrict your competitors and you never have to spend your profits on research and development, hell yeah the American way😂😂😂

My older 2016 R580 has variable blades on turbo. And it also recirculates exhaust gas... When that engine got turbo problems, it cost alot to replace it. Perhaps of people complaining they get rid off those systems and maybe just burning alot adblue is better than replacing parts on your truck.

It would be interesting to see a comparison with one of those big American style Volvo trucks.
