I love that while the Heisei trilogy was more subtle with the "Friend To All Children" part of Gamera, The Brave fully embraced it _without_ making the kids annoying, useless and unlikable like in the Showa movies

Yea I always got so annoyed by them. I wish they would do a good reboot but honestly by today's standards and the reboots we've seen maybe it's best to just leave him be. But don't take my word for it I grew up with 98 godzilla and that one is still my favorite design even though the movie sucks. Idk something about him being part iguana always made me like it more.

Fun fact: gamera the brave was originally going to be the first instalment of a new gamera millennium trilogy but due to the film not really doing well in the Japanese box office the plans were ultimately abandoned

Honestly, the best way to describe Gamera the Brave is that it's basically like a Japanese version of an 80's family film from the US. It's still made for kids, but it has some cool and even dark elements to it that keep it entertaining for everybody of all ages. That's probably a good way to look at it before watching it just so people know what they're getting into. It's not the Heisei films, but it's still one of my favorites.

I'll be perfectly honest and state that Gamera The Brave is not only a highly underrated film, but also a personal favorite which I've revisited on numerous viewings even more so than the Heisei Trilogy, a trio of highly praised Gamera films made between 1995-1999. Brave perfectly mixes family film whimsy with serious drama and Kaiju action, all under the great direction of Ryuta Tasaki; shame we never got sequels with this one.

Imagine if it was more like a modern american family movie. Kenny is biracial and has 2 gay dads, Gamera argues with Gaus, goes into a depression at the end of the 2nd act, changes Gaus to a competition, wins using friendship, then Gaus disappears for no reason. No violence, swearing, and without so much as stepping on an empty shack

I like to think the Atlanteans designed Gamera to be raised this way as a form of security. When Gamera self-destructs, his next form has to be raised by a kind human who will then give the future Guardian of the Universe his powers when he matures. If Gamera was born with his full power and grows up alone, there is a chance he could turn against humans.

Actually they do explain where Zedus came from. After Gamera blew himself up to destroy the Gyaos, their remains were eaten by a sea creature and caused it to transform and mutate into Zedus.

Upon watching the movie, I do have to realize that, while the monster action might be sparse, this actually isn't a bad movie; I feel like it's the first time a Japanese Kaiju film was made with genuine heart added into the production. I actually kind of like the concept that they sort of justify why Gamera would have a fondness for children in this one, in that, Gamera was actually friends with them. I like the idea of the story with a kind of passing the torch, coming of age, and realizing one's destiny sort of vibe to it. It almost makes me wish we had a little bit more insight into Toto's character, as he comes to grips with being the new Guardian of the Universe. But maybe I'm just over-reaching there. The cutesy relationship between Toru and Toto is actually what makes the movie in a kind of E.T. vibe; though I feel like there should've been more emotion thrown in. At the end, it's just kind of accepted that Toto is Gamera, which means that he and Toru are forever on different paths in their lives, and will probably only ever see each other again at the worst times in life. But still, the thought of having Gamera back in the world would be an uplifting message. I gotta say I was a bit disappointed in Zedus - not just in the movie, but in how you covered him. This is actually one of the few giant monster movies that actually features the monsters eating people, and you just skipped over it. I thought that would be a major juxtaposition compared to other Gamera films. But as for Zedus himself...well the fact that we don't know what he is or where he came from bothered me; it just makes it seem like Giant Monsters are just a thing in this world; but that wouldn't make sense if Gamera was gone for about 33 years and NO giant monsters attacked. The way Zedus looks, and his harpoon tongue, and grape-koolaide blood lead me to believe he was actually intended to be a rebooted Barugon, but was changed at the last minute. But more than that; I feel that Zedus is probably the most awkward thing about this movie - much like in GMK - part of the problem is the actor in the Suit....acts like he's an actor in a suit; as in, there's not enough of a primal or feral vibe behind his movements to believe that he's an actual animal. There's just something somewhat unnatural about how he's depicted. On the whole, this movie had a lot of things going for it, and with a slight bit of tweaking, I think could've been great, and a great concept to explore for a new generation of Kaiju movies. But I also feel like it's lack of exposure over in the United States also had a reason for why this movie fell into obscurity and never got a sequel; hell, I didn't even know the movie was dubbed into ENGLISH until this very video, which was part of the reason I put off watching it for so long. In the end, I'll have to give it a "Meh;" a lot of heart and some cutesy moments, but it doesn't really deliver on the emotional pay-off it was building up to.

Finally watched this movie and it was such a cute/heart warming movie while still being a good kaiju flick. Gamera was the goofiest thing ever at his roots but against all odds it had all the glory a kaiju could wish for with the heisei trilogy and the Brave. 11:33 - Some breeds of turtles need heat lamps to not freeze to death. Maybe the smaller version of Gamera got enough warmth from the natural climate as he would have released much less heat energy at that size, but as he grew without that “radioactive” stone the temperature around him was far to low to make up for the heat he lost. Or something like that. Wasn’t Gamera’s flaw in the first movie his sensitivity towards the cold?

While the kid in movie was tolerable even that doesn't save this movie there is so much shit that isn't even answered. What's the first Gamera's history were did he come from? Why are the Gyaos Here were did they come from? What connection does Gamera and Gyaos have? Where does the red stone fit in all of this? Is the new Gamera even remotely related to the Previous Gamera in any way? Where does Zedus come from? Why Does Zedus look like Jirass from Ultraman? I'm sorry I just couldn't get invested in this entry of the Gamera series

Well, i'd say the first Gamera here as well as tha Gyaos are supposed to be from the previous trilogy. If i remember correctly there was a plot about lots of Gyaos beeing around and Gamera leaving to go get rid of them. This would also answer the question what connection they have. They fought in a previous movie and are kinda like arch enemys. The red stone and Zedus though....i have no fucking idea xD

Except that the previous trilogy took place in the 90s and this flashback takes place in 1973. The scene was written to look something like a conclusion to the 90s version on purpose, but only to provide fans with a sense of closure before moving on to a new adventure. They're not really connected at all.

My answers: Red stone:i don't even know why this thing exist but i guess it's a reference to zoffy spinning red ball from ultraman Relatives of gamera:toto probably saw his father kill the gyaos and self destruct,he isn't fully grown yet when he fought zedus and when he fully grown he will look like his father (1999 design) Where does zedus come?:zedus probably was a hybrid between a t rex and gyaos,zedus probaby lives in a forest Why does he look like jirass?: inspiration

Whoever they got to dub for Gamera really blew it. I just saw a re-edit of this movie with all of Gamera's traditional roars restored. Japanese with English subtitles and Gamera speaking in his original language too. So much better!

Apparently the original version didn’t even have the roar. When media blasters tried to edit it in, kadokawa put their foot down. I guess they wanted to make this distinct from everything else
