This is a how-to video about removing old flute pads and installing new ones. This is the first in a series of videos about working with flute pads.
The other videos should be published soon and there will be links to them when they are published. Want to leave a tip so Art can continue to make more quality videos?

Thank you so much! Your videos helped me repair my 20 year old flute. I thought it was a loss but I had no clue I would be able to repair it on my own during Covid. Thank you!

Very informative video. What is the block made of (the one you place the key on prior to whacking it with your mallet)?

That is a block of oak. I got it in college and I have used it for many years.

@@TheBrassandWoodwindShop I has another question: about the C pad (the little one), how does it stay in the key ? Because there is no system that maintains it inside (neither the holed keys' system nor closed keys' one). As you guessed, I'm about to change the pads of my first YAMAHA flute (I have a semi-pro Muramatsu flute too) and so I'm catching as much as information that I could find on the Web 🙂. Thanks a lot in advance, and I'm sorry if my English is not perfect, I'm a French flutist.

The High C key is held in by glue. I use hot glue (used for craft projects), but you can use other types of glue if you do not have hot glue. I hope to publish some videos about replacing flute pads soon. I am trying to learn French, but your English is a lot better than my French. :)

thank you very much for sharing! what is your opinion regarding thickness of the flute pad? warm regards
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 3 жыл бұрын
The pad should stick out of the pad cup about .014 of an inch. I use shims to get it to the correct height, so thickness is not very important to me. I hope this helps, Art

I get my pads from Ferree's Tools, Allied, and Prestini. I think that the only one who will sell to the public is Ferree's. ferreestoolsinc I am sure there are others, but those are the ones I use.

so, my flute just kind of screams when i play about half of the notes, is that pad leak? it seems to work a little better if i hypersqueeze the keys down
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 4 жыл бұрын
My two guesses are that it is out of adjustment and the skins on some of the pads are ripped.

@@TheBrassandWoodwindShop neither of those things sound like things I can do on my own ;_;. That's too bad, I found an old flute from the fifties in my time of musical need and brought it back to life as much as I could on my own but I think this boy is destined to go back in the box cause I definitely can't afford to send it off for repairs

I am working on a flute and I am looking for plastic pad holders and can't seem to find one. Do you know where I can order one
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 4 жыл бұрын
You can get one from Allied Supply, but they only sell to music stores. You can get one from most music stores too. Most flutes that have plastic pad holders also have the threads so that you can also screw in a metal washer. If you do have one like that, you can just replace it with a metal screw and washer.
