I’m not sure if you’ll ever see this, but i feel compelled to write about it anyways. I just recently found your channel, and am here after seeing your video on Dali’s support of fascism. This video is pretty eye opening in relation to that topic. Because I think Dali hiding behind his mustache is not too dissimilar to the crypto fascists on 4chan hiding behind bored ape avatars and 12 layers of irony. They say all these edgy things for attention at first, eventually they start to believe it. The same way Dali believes his eyebrows are antennas. It’s all cynical really. And what is cynicism but a way for one to run from their insecurities. He’s afraid no one will care about his art because he’s not a genius. Maybe he’s rejected the idea of a genius completely to protect his ego and merely mascarades as one cynically. When he finally gets the recognition of being a genius his feelings are validated. He is rewarded for his insincerity, and eventually gets lost in the character he’s made out for himself. Now that’s all great men are to him: great characters. And more dangerously, all great characters are great men. That could explain his inability to care for others. Everything’s a show and nothing really matters. No one really believes what they say, and if they do it’s just a shallow attempt to stroke their ego. He’s right about one thing though: it’s tragic. He says the tips of his mustache are like two sentinels guarding the true self in his eyes, but i wonder if there was anything left behind them anymore anyways. Maybe Dali felt like he could no longer drop the venire anymore because he knew it’s all he had left. And maybe he sensed that Hitler was the same as he was. Maybe he’s right.

Nice write up, but I pity how postmodern your view is! You seem to describe the idea of great men as inherently flawed. Then what is your idea of ultimate ideal? In what image should we strive?

Dali is a very good seller. His sell everything. Not only sell paintings but everything. You don't need to like Dali to like his paintings.

This video reminded me very much of the early career of the popstar Lady Gaga. Like Dali, she also made her own public persona into an ongoing work of performance art.

Contrasting impressionism with surrealism to explain Dali as artifice as opposed to artist is brilliant. His commercial value is indisputable vis a vis the retail establishment. Here's one for you: Dali is Spanish. The mustache is the horns of the "bull". Thanks for the reminder!

Thank you Vito! I feel like it might be counterintuitive to consider someone's personality as a surrealist creation. Me too, I will see Dali completely differently from now on.

while he's an interesting character and has some thought provoking statements, between him seemingly admiring Hitler and having no respect for animals, i really dislike him lol

I feel like if any of the artist saw the walk you understand their art , they would be so happy that someone understood what they meant and that the meaning is being shared. I don’t know if what I said makes sense but I know what I mean.

As an art history major egoist who stores Dali mustache, his way of treating everything as a theatrical character is fascinating to me. It's hard to not think that aspect of his life specifically promotes his support of fascism.

Yknow, in a very strange way for better and for worse, Dali reminds me a lot of Marilyn Manson and other musicians like that. I don't know how much actual influence the man had on MM, and I doubt most will understand what I am getting at here. But in terms of mentality, in terms of seeing themselves as a persona that is meant to be shocking and over the top and sell an image on purpose, in terms of having imagery and some probable philosophical leanings towards fascistic belief yet all too ironically going against in every way what the actual Fascists liked from an aesthetic/philosophical standpoint in their style of artistic output; and having an early life full of trauma, mental illness, substance abuse, and turmoiled partnerships based around 'muses' which go too far, I see a lot of parallels.
