A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician explains in simple terms how the high voltage battery works in Toyota Hybrids.
In this brand new series I will go over all components of the hybrid system explaining their basic function in a simple way that's easy to understand. The theme of this series is simple but complicated.
The hybrid system in Toyota cars is super complicated and a marvel of engineering. In this series I try to keep things simple and light so Toyota Hybrid owners can see how their cars work.
I believe if you know how your car works you'll be able to utilize all it's features better and better understand your hybrid Toyota.

As a college instructor for 20 years, I know that some people can be a master of subject matter but can't teach it to others. Helping someone else understand complex issues and making it easy to understand is a skill. It comes natural to a few and others never get it as hard as they try. AMD is a natural - I enjoy listening and learning from him. Don't change the recipe.

@@TheCarCareNut G'day Improper start up times before using a motor... I've always been mindful of cold starts with cars Getting them working before they've warmed up is harsh on components I understand that most engine wear actually happens in the first few minutes Have you noticed that hybrid motors fail before their dedicated gasoline do, because by design they aren't actually warm before working? Or have I missed something? Thank you for your time He is risen!

My wife and I have had a lot of cars over the last 47 years, but for the last 16 years we have owned nothing but Prius. She got one new in 2002, and the reliability was so good we were astounded. I traded in a Nissan 300ZX for a used 2002 Prius in 2002, and we have had only one problem beyond dead 12V batteries in all these years: my 2002 had a bad inverter coolant pump at 196K miles. By far the most reliable cars we have ever had. I have no idea which would come in second place.

I’ve owned a 2010 Prius for about three years. I had to replace the hybrid battery last year. But, it wasn’t the $6000.00 you hear people scream about. It cost me less than $2500;for a brand new Toyota one, installed. It’s not a luxury car, but it’s fun to get 49 mpg. It burns no oil. I hope to enjoy it for a long time. I hope you do too!

Thankyou for doing this. You make it so anyone can understand the components and what they do. My hybrid experience was with the first and second gen Prius. We had an instructor that had us remove the battery packs and inverter/converters from two working Priuses with no problems. We took the covers off the battery packs he explained how to test the individual batteries and how each individual "cell" was 7.2 Volts "at that time." We learned how to clean the corrosion from the straps that connected the cells, what to torque them to after reinstalling them, how the small bolts were special that held the straps to the battery how each cell could be recharged, and even how a little problem came along after a while that caused a fuel mileage problem. Well, cleaning the straps, checking and replacing a bad cell (back then) followed by recharging brought the fuel mileage back to where it was supposed to be. Then the other group with the removed inverter/converter went over that with the instructor and both groups on that Prius reinstalled the inverter/converter, the battery pack and the safety plug. Once that was done, the vehicle had to start and not have any codes! Then we went to lunch. After lunch, we reversed positions and my group got to remove and learn about the inverter/converter by taking it apart, putting it back together and adding the coolant back into the reservoir for that part of the system. The vehicle had to start, not have codes, and we were done for that day. I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THAT DAY IN THE SHOP WITH THOSE TWO PRIUSES! Several years later, one of our Prius's was in a wreck, I got to change engine coolant hoses, the radiator and other parts. Yes, I removed the inverter/converter, replaced several small coolant hoses under that unit, put it back together and since the Body shop had done their work, I finished the car, got it going and no codes. I learned two things about that car. How to keep the transmission from going into park so the vehicle could be moved around with the engine off and keyfob removed, by removing a relay in the underhood fuse/relay box thanks to Carolyn who worked on Priuses in a different part of California and was a member of iATN like me. The second item was the early hybrids did not like to sit long especially in the Body Shop and sometimes would not start even with a full tank of gas. Seems the float in the tank would sink. A quick tip was to shake the back of the car from side to side and the float would regain its "floatability!" Then it started! Other than a couple small battery changes, I didn't do much maintenance to the other Priuses that were in our City fleet.

This is the exact corolla hybrid I drive, down to the cooler and all. I've known that the battery is under the seat, but had not had a chance to see what it actually looks like without the seat. I love this video, it was full of information but easy to follow, I really like learning about this system. It truly is quite simple once you lose the fear of the unknown. I also love that you explained the clicks those relays make, I always hear them clicking in and tried to imagine what was going on there, I just thought of it as electricity flowing. I've had the car for about 18 months now, I ordered all 3 filters, ac, intake, and hybrid battery, I figure it's a good time to do them all, I wonder what the hybrid one looks like. I had intended to change the ac filter but had some trouble finding it some months ago.

I have a 2016 Prius, bought new in February 2017 (I got a great deal!). You mentioned around the 13-minute mark that you don't recommend storing the cars as it might affect battery life. Well, since I live in Nova Scotia (rust capital of the world), I have put my Prius in storage from mid-October to mid-April for the last five years (unheated barn). So far, no problems, so I am hoping my luck will hold! By the way, I now have over 100,000 km on it and my overall fuel economy for that entire time is 3.9 litres/100km--which translates to about 60 miles per U.S. gallon. I love this car! I am a fire fighter. Knowing that there is a disconnect switch from the battery to the vehicles systems is VERY important for me to know. Our challenge is that if the battery cell is damaged in an accident how can we perform an extrication without getting shocked, or worse? Obviously we need to remove a viable patient from a vehicle as quickly as possible, but if the vehicle is charged, we are presented with greater danger for emergency crews. Any information in this regard, addressed to emergency response, would be much appreciated by many.

I think it would be a good idea to have a mechanism to flood the battery with nitrogen or sand, the problem with the battery is two fold, one the energy stored in the battery. Two the the energy of the battery burning

This is good information, but, as some may know, an accident is unpredictabble. Any damage to the battery could result in charging the entire vehicle, making extrication difficult or impossible. I now own a 2024 Sienna and appreciate how good Hybrids are, but many of you can understand the dangers that emergency workers face. Please keep this kind of information coming. A further challenge for us is that every manufacturer builds electric and hybrid vehicles differently.

Very interesting and relevant, thank you. I'm not sure why it took so long for Toyota hybrid (or any hybrid) to take off, in terms of mainstream market demand. The fact that hybrid wasn't available on more of their models is a factor and they have continued to prove and refine their original design. Everything I've seen seems to suggest the battery lasts a long time, unless neglected or abused. The cost to reco or replace battery in 10 to 15 years is not bad, compared to other fairly common failures on other vehicles, considering the fuel and brake savings, etc.
