We have a friend in Salem, Missouri who has a 2006 4Runner. He is not in the rust belt. His has 332,000 miles on it. He changes the oil regularly but has never done anything with the transmission and it's still running fine. I just did a drain and fill of the ATF on our 2009 RAV4 which as just over 100,000 miles on it. However, the transmission only has 36,000 miles on it because the original tranny was replaced by the Toyota dealer due to a defect. The cost of replacement was paid in full by an aftermarket warranty.
@seamasrigh21629 ай бұрын
You certainly gave this a valiant effort. I truly hope that this transmission has been saved, but for how long? My concern is regarding that "sealed" transmission. Checking the fluid level seems to be at least an effort if not a pain. Is there no warning light or Code generated to indicate that the trans is a quart or more low? I have a 2006 Avalon (I know, the "worst" year to have) it has a dipstick. I check it, I check the oil, the power steering, the brake fluid and the coolant, weekly. Maybe I am paranoid about it but that's how I found my power steering line leak before it became a problem. I am disgusted that Toyota joined the ranks of other insincere car manufacturers, who don't care about customers or quality, to make a system that can fail catastrophically without a hint of the trouble until it may be too late. Almost 5 qts low!! No excuse Toyota.

its that the oem axle never go bad on toyots and are better quality than aftermarket. The leaking seals can be replaced. But on the plus side, instead of paying 450 for two shocks I paid 230 plus two sway bar links.

I am NZ'er we call that model a Surf, if that went through for a safety warrant of fitness , which is every 12 months for car year 2000 plus and 6 monthly for cars under 2000, that Toyota would be condemned with the rust and off the road, or probably subject to a repair cert that would specify at least a good sand blast and report and more than likely a new chassis and structural parts, therefore be uneconomical and scrap..

NZ cars are usually quite ok, but since 1985 we have had 1000's imported from Japan and in the past there has been some come in from salty road area's that have been rusty and that has been a huge problem for the importer. It really don't happen to much these days as restrictions have got tighter and they get checked prior putting on transport ship by NZ customs agents but even any other car on our roads that may show signs of rust bubbles on panels or underneath can still be subject to more investigation and repairs in order to get a warrant inspection pass.

Hope you make a video on converting the X-REAS system to new shocks. Interested in brand you use to replace the old system. Thank you for the videos, your work ethic, thoroughness along with your experience help me to keep my Toyota mechanically sound at all times!

How do you always know what I'm working on? I just discovered the lines going to my Land Cruiser's radiator are weeping at the connection. No idea how long it's been going on so I have to find your other video and get a refresher on servicing the sealed transmission. Your videos save me so much time and money. Thank you.

dealer parts guy here in Pennsylvania (rust burg). i hate that xreas system. i talk to the customer and make them know exactly how expensive and unnecessary those shocks are. only once did i have some lady put $4k into replacing everything because she planned on selling it and wanted everything factory. truck wasn't even in good shape to begin with. money wasted.

I checked in the internet about the reax schock system and is to improve cornering handling but they acknowledge that is very expensive to replace and recommend to be removed 🙏🏽

Exactly why every new vehicle I buy goes from the dealer strait to Krown rust control. I have never had rust issues. A snow belt MUST!

Your average salt/ rust belt car lasts 10-12 years. Yes you can mitigate the issue with Fluid Film or similar (one time sealers don't work), but few do. The point being this car has lasted longer than most (perhaps it was moved out of the rust belt at some point, but the damage has been done) but replacing calipers and brake lines when the frame is turning to powder doesn't make sense, so they drive them until they break.

@20:15 Those are how the parts come from the supplier to the assembly plants. A parts bin on the production floor may contain 30 of those parts and aren’t individually wrapped so the caps are on there to keep contamination out. Low use service parts are purchased periodically from the same supply chain so you get some of the same weird packaging quirks. This typically doesn’t apply to consumable parts like water pumps, brakes, etc.

That old fluid looked pretty good for being as old as it was. It's gonna be interesting to see if the tranny survived being 4 quarts low!

Don't know about USA, but in England and presumably Europe there's no specific oil change interval on the 5 speed auto transmission, at specific intervals the workshop is supposed to inspect the oil, presumably by taking a sample from the level plug...by the way it still annoys me having to mess about underneath to check the level instead of a dipstick. The same box is found in Prado from 2004, most of us sensible owners give that ''no need to change the oil unless'' instruction a good ignoring, gearbox failure among those of us on the Landcruiser forums is unheard of. My Prado is 19 years old now and despite being in England where salt is used extensively in winter the vehicle is still rock solid, but i do treat the undersides with ACF50 spray and keep the chassis coated in marine grease.
@Yaba4149 ай бұрын
Great work on that tranny, worst case scenario the customer can buy the parts off of a yard. These are bullet proof if maintained. Careful with the LS430 fuel pump, if I remember correctly it has 2, the fuel gauge is controlled by a board that sits in the fuel tank, these go bad as well.

It’s really smart to oil spray your car every year or two with a wet spray rust proofing product. I’m in Canada and there are several professionally applied options. I do it on our cars are there’s barely any rust underneath after many years.

There was a repair shop in my area where I grew up that did undercoating for a reasonable price. In fact, the shop's reputation was such that many a new vehicle owner would have this done immediately after driving the vehicle off the dealership lot. The undercoating substance was essentially the leftovers from the bottoms of crude oil barrels, a tar-like substance. My parents had a Ford Fairmont for over twenty years; there was hardly any rust to be found anywhere in the undercarriage ever.

AMD, that sad Forerunner looks about as bad underneath as most of the stuff in my home state of Rhode Island. I have had to dispose of many vehicles here. I think there is more life there, but a shame at 100,000 miles. I hope your trans service goes well for you. It is amazing that as busy as you are, you still give 100% to each customer! God bless you.

That front fluid line on my '08 blew also. Still struggling to get it running right. This video is very helpful, but I just wish it came out a year ago! Also waiting until I'm confident in transmission before making other bigger repairs (suspension and exhaust). 207k miles.

I started watching the channel during the pandemic. It doesn’t surprise me a bit how far it has grown. It’s hard to find honest mechanics and a shop that helps customers save money. You’re a dream owner for a mechanic. I hate turning wrenches for someone that has no clue what you’re doing but evaluate you by your numbers. Your videos have always been informative and not boring to watch. Looking forward to seeing what the future brings but keep up the great work car care nut family.

I am a first owner of the 2008 Toyota 4Runner SR5. Couple of years ago I had blown rear axle seal on the driver side. I researched and the reason for this failure was a small metal breather on the top of the rear axle ( on the left ) that was completely rusted and stuck. When axle hot the gases has no place to escape and eventually blown the axle seal. I see on this truck in this video it appears the breazer is rusted as well, I would check if the top is freely moving. Love your videos AMD!

Here in England Toyota 4x4's are really expensive used, so too are the hybrid Toyota models. Used to be able to buy used Toyotas cheaply, but that's changed over the last few years, seems more people have cottoned on they're good products. Rust is the killer in England too, i treat my 2005 Prado every year, its still rock solid.

To be honest, whilst I feel a little bad for the owner. It does seem like he could've given it a bit more TLC than he did. Ripped boots, bluetooth shocks, that leak of the trans should've left puddles where he parked. I've been in this situation too, but atleast I can tell myself It wasn't for lack of trying. Here though... why wait so long with everything. It feels a bit neglected...

Nice thing about living in Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona; all of our cars are rust free, especially since they no longer use sodium based ice melt on the roads. We have an ‘08 Sequoia that, from underneath, it looks as good as one 15 years newer.

It always amazes me how gone so many of these Toyota's are on the underside. I know rust belt stuff and road salt but dang I mean, I live in Wyoming so we have winter too and road salt and I never have had this much rot. Then again I do try to clean the underside at the car wash in the winter and coat with wax so that is probably why. My vehicles are much older than this one to.
