So Should you buy a 2023 Toyota Sequoia? Did Toyota make a mistake updating another one of it's ancient trucks?
In this video we finally get a chance to properly review the 2023 Toyota Sequoia in a fashion you normally don't see in car reviews.
First we start with the technical side of things talking about the engine, hybrid system and transmission. Then we take a tour underneath the new sequoia to see what changed.
Then we take a look at the exterior and interior. Some things we like, some things we don't like.

Along with the others, I greatly appreciate your honesty and how well informed you are. I previously owned a 2011 Sequoia and presently own a 2017 LX570. Both did and have served me very well with no mechanical problems over 100,000 miles on each vehicle presently. I am very, very reluctant to purchase a hybrid LX or Sequoia in the future. @@AdamWild572 We've had both a 2002 Sequoia LTD & 2015 Sequoia LTD. Downsized to a 2022 4 Runner LTD. It suits us size wise @ this point. But I agree with Adam Wild- the 2015 Sequoia was far more usable, back seat folds flat to floor, power back window, drove well, held its value & most importantly, was totally reliable. Much simpler power train (bullet proof). New one is bigger outside, and poorer utility inside. And for all its complexity, no significant mpg increase! Keep your 2015 Adam

Land Cruiser all the way! Or a 4Runner. You can't go wrong. Though it looks nice and has some great features, I see too many red flags and a potential money pit on this Sequoia. Also, the approach front angle is ridiculous in my opinion. A Land Cruiser on the other hand is a breeze. Good luck!

@@joeblack1052 What I've read online about the situation is that Toyota Japan did have plans to drop it but Toyota North America wanted something in that class and made a bunch of promises. It's also why we won't be getting a Land Cruiser for a while. My only gripe is why they spent so much R&D on the front end but then skimped out putting the bulky rear suspension in there which removed the space for the battery which leads into the cargo availability.

I own a 2003 4WD Sequoia I bought brand new back in 2002. Now 20 yrs and 260K miles later it still runs well, a little banged up on the exterior but most of its parts are still original, only had to replace power steering rack and radiator, and of course the infamous rear door latch. But other than that it's bullet proof. I was so so excited about this new Sequoia when Toyota revealed it. And the first Toyota fan boys that got their hands on the early preproduction unit to review it had nothing but great things to say about it, which only made my excitement grew. But as more and more realistic reviews come out I got really disappointed. This review is the final nail. Thanks for talking about the details of this engine, I did not know it has so many radiators and separate cooling systems, just a disaster waiting to happen, among many other negatives.
@barrywiseman7012

We had a 2002 Sequoia LTD when they first came out. Same experience-steering rack and rear latch twice. But otherwise great. Better quality seats than our 2015 model. Drove more in size and tighter steering feel than our 2015 Sequoia. More like the 2022 4Runner we have now. Turning circle of 2002 Sequoia & 2022 4R are similiar - not too great-but liveable. The 2015 Sequoia had excellent short turning circle radius for tight parking manoeuvres, but at the expense of too much power assist, and wander in crosswinds. I trust the Toyota quality, but I agree with Mario Meas above-too complicated engine/drivetrain for insignificant increase in mpg, and confidence in long term reliability
@styledliving
@styledliving Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the real upgrade to a 4WD Sequoia is a Land Cruiser or LX. Slightly less cargo capacity, but all the modern refinements we want. Fortunately the 100-series models are really well priced, even low miles ones. Mike Sweers missed the target here with his choice in NiMH batteries instead of Lithium/LiFePO4 chemistries. They could've made the vehicle more upright and stored the batteries on the sides above and to the rear of the wheel wells. We lose a lot of interior width because wheel wells are covered by interior panels and subsequently lost/under utilized storage. The Grand Highlander is going to be a great city and typical road trip vehicle, but it's not a true 4WD vehicle that can articulate over rough terrain that a Body on Frame configuration can. It's just such a shame that the interior cargo capability of the Sequoia was diminished to the point that it couldn't even work for offroading. Even Expedition Overland has to compromise greatly due to Toyota North America's design decisions. It's ironic, but the 4runner actually has more cargo capacity behind the 1st row than the Sequoia.

And of course the price is too high. I think the Lexus GX is a better buy. I do not think this will be a big seller for Toyota . This is definitely a vehicle only a highly trained Toyota mechanic will be able to work on. If you buy one, you better buy the extended warranty. As for myself, I will not even consider the Sequoia. I’m a GX470 owner. Do you find the 4Runner underpowered as compared to your GX? I’ve driven 22 TR4 in town and it was adequate. Is the lack of power noticeable when merging on a highway?
@Duhaubetahiks
@Duhaubetahiks Жыл бұрын
@@MaximumDIYGarage adequate- yes, but the GX460 has a lot more power at lower rpms, 6speed transmission, awd system, I am getting the same fuel consumption as the 4runner just quieter, smoother ride with more power. Only downside is the premium fuel for the GX. For a dedicated off roader the 4runner wins- better ground clearance, approach and departure angles! Now the GX470 is a different animal, I used to own an LX470 with the same engine, the 4runner is definitely faster and more fuel efficient than the older V8 on the GX470

We have a 2014 Sequoia with 231k miles on it (so far). My main complaint is the size of the gas tank. When we're towing, we get single digit mileage and have to be very careful on long hauls, especially in the mountains. This new version gets the same mileage, but has a smaller tank. My only other complaint is that the nav system that doesn't update - unless you spend a few hundred bucks for a new chip. Our Garmin fills that gap. I'm kinda shocked about the rear seat business. In my old Sequoia, the third row lays flat, making for a huge cargo area. Plus the second row lays flat and is even with the third row. I can easily put a sheet of plywood in there. This new design actually takes away a great feature. Hopefully Toyota can work out some of the kinks and shortcomings if our current one ever wears out.

More important than carbon buildup, the D4S engine does not use direct injection until thew engine warms up. Thereby, not putting gasoline into your engine oil. That is the most important thing that I am surprised you didn't mention.

Great in-depth non-drive review. After the Land Cruiser was gone, the Sequoia has taken a bigger role in the lineup. So you would have expected a “feel” closer to the LC, in between the two vehicles. But it feels very much like a Tundra. I have a lot of faith in the new powertrain. Not too concerned abt the fit and finish. Was this designed in Calty also?

I think this would have been a killer full-size SUV is they had made both rows easily removable, similar to what you would find in mini-vans back in the day. Heck, even a removable third row would have been awesome. Huge misstep that's going to take this off a lot of shopping lists despite everything else the Sequoia has going for it.

Love the in-depth detail here. I've got a second gen and IMO there are two massive steps backward in this car - the first is actually the solid rear. Solid rear on its own is fine, but that plus the battery leads to the horrendous ergonomic 2nd and 3rd row situation. Not what shoppers want these days out of a 3 row SUV, especially one of this price. Would have much rather they kept the IRS, which the gen 2 had. The other issue is that they dropped the torsen diff in the transfer case. Again, maybe better for off-roading, but basically unusable if you wanted to use 4hi as an "AWD" mode. How many suburbanites are going to realize that and leave it in 4hi? Major disappointment for me, as I was looking forward to this car for a long time. Looking at the Grand Highlander now, despite the lower towing capacity. The GH's 2nd and 3rd row setup is the same as the 2nd gen Sequoia, which is great

I asked myself this question about three months ago and I can tell you the answer is NO! I currently have a 2015 Sequoia Limited 4x4 and four kids and a wife. We bought it when our kids were small knowing one day they would be adult sized teenagers. Anyway, my kiddos are 17, 15, 13, and 11. Anyway, I took the family to Toyota to get the transmission serviced, the break fluid changed, and an oil change while I was there, and had the whole family get into a 2023 Sequoia Limited that was at the dealership. My two oldest boys heads hit the roof in the back, they all recognized it was not only shorter but smaller in general, and my wife hated the fact there wasn't as much room in the back to store stuff and groceries. Technology was nice but honestly I don't give a crap about that. I only care about reliability and low cost of ownership. I asked them all should we trade in the 2015 Sequoia for this new one and 100% of my family said almost at the same time NO WAY. Bottom line, if you need a vehicle this large by the last generation. It's cheaper, it is bullet proof, and mpg is not as bad as people say. Plus, mpg doesn't matter. What matters is entry cost and long term cost. Just one repair these days and you've wiped out any so-called mpg savings. Also, the mpg this vehicle gets is pretty much what I am getting in my current Sequia. I cannot understand how this I-Force-Max is superior to the I-Force 5.7L V8 at all outside of an extra 70 lbs of torque. You don't need it. That V8 even when fully loaded with the entire family and all our luggage and gear pulls out into traffic just fine and gets 14-15 city and 17-18 highway all day.

I’m actually surprised that Toyota stayed with Body on Frame. With the Grand Highlander there isn’t really much point in having a Sequoia. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next Sequoia is a Grand Grand Highlander. The 7th Gen 4R will probably be based on the same unibody architecture with much more clearance, articulation, and approach/departure angles.
