Full time car reviews from mainstream press are basically marketing. They depend on the manufacturers for their supply of press cars, invites to launches. They can get blacklisted and that would be disastrous, so can’t be fully transparent.

I just watched your review on a rav4, concerning issues with water build up in engine and doors. Mazada cx5 doesn't seem to hv those issues. The mazada has two exhaust converters that could be very expensive to replace. In your opinion which is the better of the two. I hv had toyotas in my yard from 1999 to 2020. Now drive a 2018 forester not happy with that.

My friend didn’t want a Toyota because they were outdated I told him go test drive multiple cars then go test drive a 2022 Camry and he fell in love with the quality of the Camry and got the Camry and he test drove a accord, sonata, and A class. Toyotas they’re simple reliable and comfortable with just the right amount of needed technology. Sure they might be behind a few years but they have something that not many other manufacturers have and that’s reliability

AMD's reviews should be required viewing for anyone who wants to give an honest, well-balanced review of the products they're reviewing. While many auto reviewers, in particular, are so worried about offending the car manufacturers that their reviews end up being glorified infomercials, here's a guy who's not only reviewing a vehicle, but he also works for the company that made the vehicle yet that didn't stop him from highlighting whatever negatives that may exist in their product, which is commendable. And, guess what? That honesty makes people more inclined to get a Toyota, rather than the opposite, since most rational people would think if a shaky hood or a door that doesn't slam with a reassuring thunk are the worst things to expect from the vehicle, then that's certainly better than the horror stories we hear about other manufacturers' vehicles! Keep up the good work, AMD, and thanks!

The rear view camera is incredibly useful. Here’s why. As a percussionist I regularly have to haul a lot of gear, and it almost always blocks the sight line for the rear view mirror. Anyone in a similar situation with cargo would welcome this feature.
@torquer9669
@torquer9669 11 ай бұрын
Exactly! The camera is for occasions when you have the cargo full and simply need to still see. Otherwise, leave it alone and use it in the normal setting. No biggie.

This feature is the one I get the most compliments about … and the way I normally put it to people is ‘I can have Shaquille O’Neil sitting in the middle rear seat without having to worry about view” (quote-Unquote). 😉😉😉. And this feature is what is holding me back from getting the new Grand Highlander, as it apparently does not have this feature, yet (unless you go Hybrid Max, which then kind of kills the whole purpose of having the Hybrid to begin with … the Fuel Economy).

It depends on the year I suppose. We had a 1989 Camry (4 cylinder) and at about the 8-9 year old mark, nobody could figure out the intermittent starting problems. Turn key and nothing. It wasn't the ignition tumbler and Toyota dealerships kept replacing the starter, alternator, or battery. Nothing reliably worked. Finally I got advice to go to a particular autoelectrician. He didn't know the exact cause either, but he got creative and drilled a hole through the dashboard by the steering wheel and installed a push button start. He did some creative wiring underneath the hood and it seemed to work until we got rid of the car when it was about 15-16 years old. Anyway, cars can be a complete challenge sometimes, even from Toyota.

This is a really outstanding review that digs deeper than the superficial aspects of the vehicle. He exposes many, many technical aspects of the car’s design and operation from a combination of what the owner/operator experiences, what the maintenance technician sees, and a little bit about why the design engineers decided to build this component or that system the way they did. Something I really appreciate when I know 'ahead' of time when I click on one of your pieces, Ahmed, is that you always refer to other Toyota's or Lexus', engines or trannys or other shared equipment, and you list specific years and models. This is so useful, because we aren't necessarily interested in purchasing the specific vehicle you are featuring, but we know we're going to find out great info by default of your common practice of mentioning other models/years that share the same issue, or doesn't have that issue. We have a 2021 XLE Rav4. Bought it brand new. We love it but I will agree with the "cheapness" AMD mentioned. And even after the repair kit was installed for the outer mirror, it still vibrates at high speeds. But we still love it and it will be a long term ownership car. I think entire door frame and bracing are a little too flexible (springs inside the mirrors are on the soft side too) on a RAV 4 (2021 Trail) and it rattles from any road imperfections or high speed too easily. Compared to my other car a Subaru Impreza 2017 where the mirrors are solid and doors are very stiff (7-8 recalls a 4 warranty repairs). Soo in the end I still like the RAV it warms up super fast in winter, more heating when it's really cold out -30 to -40 Celsius outside ; and usually same (summer) or better(winter) fuel economy then my Subaru (has boring chain CVT).

I decided to try cruise control at 65 mph. After two tanks of gas and 1028 miles my average mpg was 44. I call this car a plain Jane, 4-cyl automatic, no turbo/blower, nothing fancy. I do all my own maintenance. The only thing not to toyota spec is tire pressure. I keep my tires at spec plus 3 psi and check it all the time. You don't have to spend thousands $$ on a hybrid to get good mpg, drive a little slower and keep the tires hard...in 35 years as an aviation mechanic you learn hard tires are safe tires.

Hi AMD. I like the way you explain things which I think can relate to various viewers. I have been a mechanic for for more than 30 years and have appreciated Toyotas engineering from the day I got my first car (1978 Corona - without the Holden engine). I own 2 RAV4s. A 2006 and the 2022 hybrid Edge. My Minister of Finance (wife) was kind enough to hand down the old RAV to me which I don’t mind as it’s still going strong after more than 200;000kms. Other than the in-tank fuel filter it’s a breeze to maintain. I too was disappointed when I first heard the new hybrid had a CVT until I looked a little further. I’m more than happy to use Toyotas oils and filters while changing the engine oil every 7,500 km (4600 miles) as I want this vehicle for a very long time. You’re my favourite technician on KZbin by a long way.. Thanks mate. George Sydney Australia

Was glad to see him cover the cable corrosion issue. This is something that concerns me as my hybrid is a 21. With his info, I looked under and it has the cover and so far, the connection looks fine. Currently, there is a class action law suit on it in Canada and New Jersey. I wonder why they went to the bottom where gravity works against it. Hope Toyota gets a permanent fix sooner than later.

I started watching your videos when we were searching for a new car for my gf last year. She liked the new Toyota Yaris and it was your channel that made us choose the hybrid version (1.5 116hp) and man, it was the best choice. I love the way it goes, the hybrid tech is awesome and I simply love the e-cvt. Yes, the car can sound strange, but when I push the pedal, it reacts instantly, the power is there right away, there is not a single second hesitation. I love it. As for this video: you uploaded it a week before I was going to order my own RAV4 hybrid. :) Fun fact: the model in the video is called Executive in Europe, I’m ordering the one called Selection, that is the dual tone car with black top and black rims. Also its a 2WD. Toyota should seriously give you some extra, thanks to your channel I bought two hybrids in two years. :) Greetings from Hungary!

If you take care of the simple maintenance the big issues don’t happen. It’s the perfect car because it does exactly what is advertised and is does it so well. It’s comfortable, functional, and reliable. No surprise that it continues to be the best selling SUV on the market. Thanks for such a great review.

My 2006 Rav4 got totaled and we upgraded to a 2023 hybrid. We love a lot of the new features and we actually really like the styling. The reliability should also be much better than our 2006 which is known for a number of issues that we haven’t had major problems with, but we likely would have run into them soon. We didn’t trust used models of a similar vintage and used prices were ridiculous so we were kind of forced into a brand-new 2023 model. The tech and gas milage is a huge upgrade, but that cheapness you’re describing is definitely there. The cargo cover feels super cheap compared to the 2006 Rav4, so much so we went with an aftermarket cover that is better quality. One thing you didn’t touch on is the new one has significantly less storage space than the 2006. No under-seat storage in the rear, no under-cargo-floor storage in the back, no dual enclosed storage spaces in the center console or glove box. I used to be able to easily fit my bike in the back with one of the seats up, but the new one with it’s sloped rear-window barely had room for me to fit my bike in with both rear seats down. The lack of storage was a big surprise for me.

I agree with you about the unsettling view of the rear view camera which came with our XSE trim level. Your comments about the engine and transmission are heartening as we intend to keep ours for many more years. I didn't think the door closing sound was anything but solid. Love your detailed explanations. I bought the 2021 RAV4 Prime in September 2021. It seems perfect for my use - most of the time I don't drive far, so I can go a couple of weeks on battery only. I take longer trips about once a month when the car will run in hybrid mode mostly on the highway so the engine stays running pretty much continuously. This all seems ideal for long life for the car and minimal environmental impact - battery for local stop and go short trips, use the gas engine at least once a month long enough that it stays running and can move fluids around the engine. The only question I still have is about oil changes. I watched the engine teardown from 10,000 mile oil changes, but with my driving habits, my 5,000 miles of driving might only run the gasoline engine 2,000 miles. Do I need to change the oil every 6 months just because of moisture accumulation? I live in a northern climate, but with the engine not even running on my short trips, I doubt much moisture is really accumulating. I'd love to see a video talking about pro's and con's of the Prime use case and best practices for maintenance. I did watch your video warning not to let the gasoline engine never run.

Glad to hear the 22 is the best version to buy -- I intend to keep this thing as long as possible. I’ve owned a 2020 LE for about 3 years (12,500 miles). I take it in for regular maintenance. Mechanically it’s fine no problems so far. Gas mileage is great 34-35 miles per gallon on the highway, I mainly drive on the highway in ECO mode. My only complaints (not a deal breaker) - excessive cabin noise. - cabin lighting is pretty bad. I’m referring the the instruments (buttons) - sound system is terrible (I replaced the speakers added an amp but kept the head unit) - headlights feel dimmer then all the other cars on the road. For very light off-roading it’s fine (getting to the trail head). I wish they offered a full-size spare like the older RAV4s.
