lol turbos have been around way longer than cylinder deactivation, if you’re going to have any modern car with a turbo or cd then you will have to service either at some point but the naturally aspirated vehicle should be more reliable regardless of cylinder deactivation.

Notice AMD said in the past it was an issue. Why? Because the newer V6s have less prevalence of VCM issues versus pre 2015 I think. The good thing is if you don’t want to have VCM or don’t like the vibration when it’s active, then VCM can be disabled with VCM tuner 2.

@wescam
@wescam 3 ай бұрын
@@kanbowhunter You either get used to it working or used to clicking the button. I had it on my new 24 Outback Wilderness I sold to buy the Pilot. That auto-stop-start became mandatory on all vehicles with keyless ignition in the US in September 22 so most cars have it. They have a cycle counter and can replace the starter at a specific interval of stop+starts so you don't end up stranded years down the road due to the starter wearing out. I turn mine off.

Maybe start using a standard double stroller or 2 suitcases to put in the trunk so we can see how much room we really have. For anything with a 3rd row, I promise the families (me) watching it, care a TON about the back area of the car in making a decision. His reviews are more in depth than just rattling off a bunch of specs. You can look them up from the manufacturer or a third party source like Edmunds in a matter of seconds. But realistically, you need to see them for yourself. A model may have less cargo space on paper, but be more useful if it's laid out properly vs a larger area with a ton of intrusions, like the Highlander that has a roof strength bar that drops the height of what it can accommodate.

The Highlander I4 Light Turbo will outlast the crappy Honda V6 at least three to one. The Honda V6 uses a rubber timing chain. When it goes the engine blows. When the water pump goes out the engine blows. There is no port injection so the engine will carbon up. The Honda V6 is famous for oil consumption and dead cylinders. I4 engines actually last much longer than V6s.

I heard many stories of the VCM engine issues, but I never had issues with my 2012 Honda Crosstour, I had it for 95,000 miles without issues and was more than often running on 3 cylinders. My in-laws also had a 2017 Honda Odyssey and didn't have any issues either. Not sure what trigger that issue. I'm very happy that they brought back the full front center console though.
@loualexander3408
@loualexander3408 Жыл бұрын
VCM can cause difference in the wear of the cylinders. When a neighboring cylinder is running it is obviously at a higher temperature than the ones that are not running. This can cause warping. Eventually, the piston rings start scraping on the block walls and the car starts burning oil. If you maintained your car properly (e.g. did regular oil changes with good oil and filters) this would not appear until about 100k miles. There are ways to deactivate the VCM and I have seen many people do so to preserve their engines. A slightly less important issue is the motor mounts and transmission mounts which are designed to be activated in a certain way when the VCM is active. They can wear off faster than regular motor mounts.
@tomkatt2321
@tomkatt2321 11 ай бұрын
It's actually a bit difficult to locate definitive proof that VCM causes major engine damage. My mechanic 'gut' tells me the idea is bad, and there are plenty of horror stories on the web, but try to find more than 1 or 2 stories from people who actually had issues is harder than you'd expect for something with such a bad public perception. That said, I did install a VCM defeat device (VCM Tuner II) in our '15 Pilot, and you'd never know any of that stuff was there. Good piece of mind for $130.

@@loualexander3408this is one of my concerns. Correct me if wrong, but when the vcm kicks on and you have only 3cyl running it's either all 3 on one side or 2:1, either way without all cylinders running they're not counter-balancing eachother therefore creating more/diff vibrations in the motor which would then cause a motor mount vibration dampener to wear out quicker...is that what you're getting at?

FYI, that vent in the front fascia exiting at the wheel arch leading edge ( 21:32 ) is not for the brakes, it creates a wind screen down the side of the car to prevent the tire wash from spoiling the aerodynamics. I.e. it lowers CdA and improves highway fuel efficiency.

Thank you so much for going into depth concerning this revised engine. After a very bad VCM experience with my 2012 Accord, I became skeptical. After all the issues Honda is very aware of, they double down and get even more complicated and, in my opinion, stupid. I've owned four J series engines now, a J30 from 2006, which was excellent, no VCM. The J35 that blew up at 130,000, its replacement, and my current J35 with 71,000 on the clock. VCM is a bad deal. Maybe a 1 mpg gain while putting the engine at risk. It's no risk to Honda and their warranty, only for the owners that believed Honda used to mean quality. When my engine blew up due to VCM failure, I chalked it up to just being "one of those things" and I immediately bought a 2017 Accord V6 while my car was in the shop for a new engine. I should've bought a Lexus ES350 instead at the time. VCM is a ticking bomb and I don't recommend any Honda with it. (Edit) I have owned 7 Hondas since 1992. I have always been a fan until fairly recently. For peace of mind anymore if your plan is long term ownership from new is to just go with Toyota and Lexus.

I've got one of these in the EX-L trim. After 7600 miles, so far no complaints. We needed a capable snow driving car, not high-clearance with trail-tires. It's not lacking power at all. Highway mileage is much better than expected at speed -- I averaged 23-24 mpg on a recent 1000 mile road trip on the west coast driving at "brisk"speeds over 65-75 the whole way in "eco-mode". Very comfortable, quiet, ride and a fantastic road trip machine. Brakes are huge and amazing. This car is pretty big - it feels and drives wider and bigger than Subaru Ascent and Toyota Highlander (my other candidates before buying) --it's the widest of the three. 3Rd row is comfortable for adults. I'd say ride is firm and comfortable not plush/squishy. Very little body roll when cornering. Adaptive cruise is very useful for highway driving, esp. the "follow" function but algorithm could use some tweaking as it won't hold the lane on a moderately high-g sweeping curve at highway speeds.

i'm thinking of the EX-L trim. it has everything i need and i don't want that mega sized moon roof that i will never use that comes standard with the touring and elite. my 2014 ridgeline and 2011 acura rl have them and we never use them. we just lost our 2010 pilot touring in an accident. 125k miles well maintained. i did bypass the vcm but not until around 100k miles.

Good deal. My 2008 Honda Pilot EX-L does not have the cylinder deactivation. When I drive around 65mph I get about 22mpg. I take off the roof rack, inflate the tires properly and always have good oil and transmission fluids. Oh, I also took out the 2nd and 3rd row seats to make the car lighter as I don't really need them on a daily basis.

With 7600 miles, your car is brand new. My (not Honda, but I like Honda) has 50K on it and still feels new. My other car (also not Honda) has 140K on it and doesn't feel new, but still drives better than many cars today.

Thank You, I asked for this, and you delivered!! Hope it was done sooner though as i had bought mine in May 2023 but it is still greatly appreciated. I had a few major problems in the first few hundred miles but has been good so far currently at 6k Miles (Drive with idle stopper off).

hahaha that idle stopper is annoying. it wouldn’t take that long to wait until the green light comes on at the traffic light. i turn it off b4 i drive.. i got the lowest trim in Pilot the sport but that was rare color. the Black pearl, full black even the rims. 😅 but my wife using the suv and im still driving my old school town car 😅

Have zero interest in a mid-size SUV with a 4cyl . I'm glad Honda and other company's know people want a 6 cylinder for their SUV

I'm looking to buy an MDX relatively soon. Been watching lots of reviews, but this one focuses on what I'm interested in...ease of maintenance. loved it!

I'm also interested in the newer Acura MDX. Wonder if this mechanics review on the Pilot applies to the MDX as well. Any feedback will be appreciated

Me three! I went from an Accord to a TLX a few years ago and need a bigger car now. I think I've been spoiled by Acura luxury but I hear the MDX and Pilot are nearly the same. One thing to note is that they've completely redesigned the MDX for 2025. It looks a lot more like a crossover/wagon now

Overall a nice vehicle but I have concerns about reliability in VCM, carbon build up from direct injection and 10 speed transmission that is relatively new to big SUVs like Pilot and MDX. Honda could have intentionally designed their engine better for reliability through the use of both port and direct injection, and optionally allow the users to turn off VCM like engine auto on/off button while still satisfying emission requirements.

Yes. I’d trust his opinions & I’m a retired tech for 3 yrs. I’ve seen enough new cars & trucks in my life time since 1980. What I noticed was this, consumers want new fancy gadgets, refined everything, something they can brag about. So manufacturers want consumers to buy toys they are proud of. It doesn’t matter if it’s proven or not. Competition drives the car makers to get fancy but it creates more problems & failures. At the end, the consumers are paying the “price”, Not once but over and over. Now, some consumers are complaining why new cars are so expensive? One reason is they want safety but drive like an idiot or can’t drive at all since new cars can drive themselves. Reason 2, to have something to brag about? They have to pay more!
