A Master Automobile Technician reviews the updated 2022 Mazda CX-5 to find out if the recent facelift improved things.
So Should you buy a Mazda CX-5? Mazda has always been an innovative company that made very interesting and good cars. That is until Ford took hold of things and Mazda struggled. But that rough friendship ended and Mazda quickly bounced back to their roots of good engineering and interesting cars.
The Mazda CX-5 has a lot to offer. In this video we will start with some key technical highlights in the engine, transmission and AWD systems.
Then we'll move to the exterior and interior which has always been sleek and sharp. Even better with the facelift in 2022.
We'll take the CX-5 on a test drive to see how quiet it is and how well that 6 speed transmission shifts.
And of course no car is completely perfect, I go over somethings that I didn't particularly like about it.

Driving dynamics are great for suv, and the interior is elegant, makes me want to trade my 3. I agree the carplay with dial is funky. But love the car. Waiting for cx70

I own a Mazda 626 Sedan in Prestige Silver Metallic colour, 1990 model (fully imported from Japan) ... bought brand new in Melbourne, Australia as a gift from my father for my 18th birthday. He paid $32,000 Australian dollars for it back then! It's now 32 years old, has done 500,000 kilometres (310,000 miles) and l continue to drive it daily. Has never failed me. Unbelievable car. I cannot part with it. My first and so far, only car ...!! It still looks like new and has always been outside for its entire 32 years, so far. People cant believe it! Six weeks ago, l purchased the 2022 Mazda 3, also fully imported from Japan. I am expected to take delivery of it at the end of July. I am keeping my 1990 Mazda 626 (the love of my life!) and will never part with it and intend to drive both cars! Love and warm regards from Melbourne, Australia.

Lifelong Toyota fan. Was looking at getting a Camry, but their laziness in getting production/output to the customer made me look elsewhere. So, test drove, fell in love with, and bought a CX-5 last week-but not the turbo. Dealership was very eager to come off the price and add some incentives, So far, very happy with my new car, and the standard options are really high end. The only difference is MPG. I'm getting 25 city and 35 highway, but still too early to tell. But for $6K less than the Camry, I'll be able to pay for for gas for years to come, and break even. Thanks for the review.

I like yours because you uncover hidden things that make cars work. In this case you point out engine components that make the 2.5 Skyactiv engine unique and special. Same with the transmission. Also, you commented about the driving position and what the driver sees when behind the wheel. Most don't do that. Thanks, well done!

I have driven with a bunch of touch screens from different manufacturers (lots of rentals) and I hate them. I hate having to take my eyes off the road to focus on finding the buttons because you can't feel them. It might as well be messing around with a cell phone, it doesn't feel safe to me. On the other hand I love the rotary wheel. It's not just rotary, it's also a joystick so you can easily and quickly move between functions and screens all without changing focus from the road. It’s interesting that you bring up the quietness of the cx5. I owned a 21 CRV touring edition, top of the line, the road noise was so intrusive at highway speed that you could hardly hear the radio and had to raise your voice to carry on a conversation with the front seat passenger. My wife and I bought a 2019 Mazda 3 hatchback. I like the fact it has a 2.5 liter, naturally aspirated motor with a traditional 6 speed automatic. It’s been a great car so far. Nice interior, super quiet and very good handling. A slightly stiff ride is the only negative aspect of it but it’s not punishing. I’ve gotten over 40 mpg on the motorway as well. The reason the A pillar is so thick is for crash structure. We actually had a 2015 Mazda 3 hatch and a woman yielded incorrectly hitting my wife on the driver side. The car was totaled but my wife was completely fine. It’s a top safety pick plus vehicle and it’s built and assembled in Japan.

The only issue was going into a 30-40 mph head wind each way and it reduced the rated highway mpg by 10 mpg. Thank you! I love my 2021 non turbo CX5 AWD… I had a 2013 CX5 1st Gen and traded it with 201k miles for a 2015 CX9 (Ford based with ALOT of steering/suspension/ joint issues). My 2021 is FANTASTIC! I agree with the key fob annoyances and the A pillars being a left turn issue with visibility. I this little car handles very well and is a pleasure to drive. Thank you for your THOROUGHNESS in your reviews.

Thanks for your video on the CX-5. I'm a happy owner of a 2019 CX-5 Signature with the turbo and I was very impressed with your explanation of the turbo and the engine. I have given it normal maintenance and I don't drive it hard. I haven't had any oil consumption issues. I've also owned several Mazda's over the last 20 years, the last one a 2007 Mazda 6i 5-door that was very reliable for over 166,000 miles. Thanks for your videos.

I love (now) the infotainment system on my 2020 CX5, though it took a while to get used to. I love the fact that I no longer need to reach forward - against my seat belt a little - to operate the touchscreen. I can remain sat back in my seat while and do what I need to. It does however - take some getting used to navigating it. Very much agree with what you say about the fob. I have found my tail- lift up several times when returning to the car.

AMD, many thanks for this video. I'm a subscriber to your car care nut channel and now this one also. I'm a massive Toyota/Lexus fan but I drive a Mazda 6 turbodiesel in Europe. I just adore Mazda so much from a design and driving point of view. Plus my car is made in Japan, a massive selling point for me. MY next car will be a a Mazda. I love Mazda, long live Mazda!

I bought the 2023 Premium Plus and love it so far. Touch screen not an issue but I can see where it may be a distraction. Agree about the door though I have no issue with the button. Don't notice the bouncing you mentioned but a little hop on bumpy roads. A pleasure to drive. Great job on the reviews. I wanted a small sum but wanted to avoid the cvt and the turbo as I plan to keep it a very long time.

Greetings from the UK. Many thanks AMD for another excellent review. That is the best review of a cx 5 that i have ever seen particularly in terms of the detail regarding the engine and transmission. I fully agree that it is an attractive looking car and the quiet refined drive would really appeal to me and the review has made me realise how good the Mazda engineers are and the amount of thought that has gone into the design. Thank you AMD for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us. The Lord Bless and keep you and your family.

Great to see you look at a Mazda (first time I noticed your alternate Channel). I've Been a Mazda fan since the 90's. I've owned 2 Mitata's and a 323, and I they were all my favorite cars. Mazda's being quiet is actually a fairly recent change. Years ago there were known for being sporty and kind of loud, but they have made a decision to try and be more luxurious, even if a bit less sporty.

I tried to persuade a friend to not buy a used nx200t but instead to buy the CX-5 but some people just don't get it . I did my research and this car is extremely safe and reliable . I also like the fact of its simplicity and I don't like confusing tech . When the time comes I would definitely look into a model 2019 and up preferably under 50000 miles and I would also consider a certified used from a Madza dealer .

That engine you're were referring to is the 2.3L MZ-R. I loved my Mazdaspeed6, but damn I hated the fact that it burned oil, and the seals on the turbo leaked. In the end I gave it to charity. I also miss my little CX-5. Gave it to my sister. I need a new one.

My brothers 2011 Mazda 3 has been amazing and still drives well after almost 200,000 miles. His wife has a 2014 or 2015 Mazda CX-5 and it's also an amazing car, but with a lot less milage. For reliability it seems like Mazda might be right behind Toyota/Lexus. Honda and Acura seem to be having some trouble over the last 6 or 7 years. I've heard bad things about Honda's turbo engines, 9 speed transmissions, and overall build quality. I have a 2010 Honda Accord V6 with over 155,000 miles and it's had zero issues.

I was confused and contemplating changing my garage and for over a couple of months now, have been doing a lot of surfing trying to get the best compact SUV for me. two cars were in mind the Honda CRV and ford explorer personally I have this feeling for CRV but around me, it has become very very common these days 🙃like some diet soda.. which has led me to be more confused to join the Honda family. With ford, my mechanic keeps advising me to stay away for some obvious reasons. However, after watching your videos with the Mazda CX-5 I think I'm pretty convinced now with its specs the upgrade techs, and the looks of it which are in the class of luxury for such a type of car. i want to tell thank you very much for the review its was a good and very educative however i will encourage you to keep up with it bcuz you are soo DAMN Good CCN

My 2018 Toyota Highlander with only 57K mileage on it got burned because of block heater components issue. That’s when I looked around and considered everything to replace my beloved car. Until I came across the CX-5. I never considered Mazda on my shopping list nor test drive their cars until that one Saturday morning when I a stumbled a Kuro 2022 Black Metallic Mica with black alloy gloss trim caught my attention that I decided to test. Truly it was amazing and remarkable. Everything on this review furthers enhanced my belief of Mazda engineering. Now with almost two months driving it compensated my three years of thoughtful experienced I had with my Highlander. I can’t be more prouder with my 2022 CX-5 Mazda it’s super simple genius engineering classy and fun to drive. I loved it in every way. Good job Mazda and a lot of room to improve so to speak with AMD’s minor recommendations. Nice review too. Thanks a lot.

GG RA, Could you please tell us all about the block heater causing the fire? I'm very interested in all the details as many as are known. I could picture a rodent chewing wiring possibly being behind it in some way? Even tiny lamp cord extension cords are rarely a problem with car block heaters cuz they rarely if ever draw more than 300-400 watts. Sorry it happened, but glad you like your new CX5👍

Your approach seems to be not just "ooohhh look at this tech" or "so bad not the latest tech" like so many channels - you leave it to the viewer to decide if more or less tech is good. I love my 2015 AWD and I agree with almost everything you said although I like the keyless entry and don't find it annoying at all. The A pillar and the infotainment system is my biggest problem. I've learned to work around the A pillar so it doesn't bother me much anymore and I replaced the infotainment system. I do love the transmission as I can't stand most modern transmissions. The "bumpiness" of the drive makes me feel more connected to the road so I like that it's not so smooth like other cars.

Great review. I bought the same car but in machine gray back in February. I’m very familiar w the dial now and not getting fingerprints all over the screen I see as a benefit. I haven’t noticed an issue w the A-pillar and left hand turns. I think my CX-5 looks way better than the Lexus NX, Rav-4, and CRV. The only competition I see is the new Tuscon Hybrid which would get much better mpg.
