Thanks for an excellent and well-balanced assessment of the 348TS! You're right, it wasn't as bad as some people say, and also (again as you said) it was 30 years ago and cars weren't as good as they are now. My wife and I bought a new 348TS in 1992 as a "Sunday car" , replacing a 308GTSQV, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We replaced it in 1993 with another new 348TS (still Rosso Corsa with Crema) and had even more fun in that one. We took it back to see the factory in Maranello, and the trip was awesome. You mentioned the exhaust note, and it's mesmerising - especially going through Alpine tunnels with the roof off! Driving it around Italy was interesting; people in villages would smile and wave as we went by, and whilst parked it seemed to attract genuine attention and admiration. In the UK, people were perhaps less charitable, although I didn't find too many people declining to let me out of junctions. On balance, Porsche drivers are probably bigger targets for this. The "frunk" was more than big enough for our luggage for a week or so, and we even returned with a couple of cases of wine perched on the shelf behind the seats. The biggest problem with the car was the poor clearance on the front spoiler, and when boarding ferries I had to approach the boarding ramp diagonally to prevent grounding. Apart from that, both cars were faultless and gave many miles of enjoyment. Sadly, I ended up with 9 points on my licence, at a time when I was driving 45,000 miles a year, so I sold the car back to the dealership. I still miss it!

Don’t forget that the original Ferrari Challenge Series was built around the 348. Obviously, there was no 355 when this car came out, so put in that context, it was pretty nice car. I owned two of them back in the day (first a TS and then a Berlinetta) and really enjoyed them, especially when compared to a 308 GTSi.

I owned a 348 for 7 years and enjoyed it immensely. It handled great, steered magnificently, sounded awesome and looked good. On the demerits side, it’s gearbox was recalcitrant, had a heavy clutch, and was slowish. My car was super reliable and never stranded me anywhere.

Good, honest review Damian. Had a couple of 328 GTBs back in the day (not at the same time...), followed by a 360 which felt huge next to those. Only drove a 348 once and thought the steering was pretty good (I actually think it had better feel than my 355 - gasp!), it sounded nice and was reasonably quick. Didn't particularly like the gearchange, not because of the dog-leg (same as a 328) but it felt notchy and un co-operative, even after it had warmed up. I had my 1995 355 Berlinetta for over 10 years and even though you could argue it was a facelifted 348, what a facelift! I remember reading the original 'Autocar' road-test of the 355 in 1994 and they were amazed with the performance gains over the 348, 'shaving whole seconds' off the 0-60, 0-100 and in-gear times. I think they concluded by saying 'If ever 83000 pounds is a bargain, this is it!' I loved my 355 so much I swapped it last year for a 456 GTM (ask my wife why...). Might as well have a V12 Ferrari before I get too old to enjoy it. Loving your series and am keenly anticipating your take on the 355 and 456! Cheers from a bleedin' cold Otford, Kent.

Love the 348, looks amazing and also a car that actually makes sense on B-roads, what the point of having a modern 500+ horsepower Supercar if you can’t get anywhere near using it all, give me 300 in a lightweight mechanical car any day! I also read that the 348 was the last car Enzo signed off before he died. How does anyone fill those shoes? Well they come in and ‘rubbish’ the car and make their own statement model (using practically the same parts), even though LucaM actually owned a 348 himself -- go figure? Great review thanks. I was looking for a 348 and ended up with a 355 for the same price (RHD V LHD) but my 355 was not the best example and i wish i had brought a good 348 over a poor 355. I dont think the performance matters too much at this age, no-one buys them because they are quick, they are classic cars that give a weekend experience. I have actually heard many positive things about the 348 and would like to try one but dont think i would buy one. I think the negativity at the time was partly due to the sublime NSX which was released at a similar time and was perceived as a much better car, hence the 348 was swiftly replaced by the 355. I see you are driving on some of my favourite roads too 👍🏻
@oj71772 жыл бұрын
The 348 wasn't swiftly replaced by the 355, as the 355 came out in late 94 and the 348 in late 89. In comparison, the 328 came out in 85 and got replaced in 89. The 360 came out in 99 Also, the 355 is heavily based on the 348, with dario benuzzi (historic ferrari test driver who also tested the 355) who said that at maranello they focused more on making the car easier to drive, rather than faster in the corners I read various magazines from the time in which they compared the 348 and the nsx (none of them was italian), and they basically said the 348 is the best sunday/sporty drive (in its category, not only compared to the honda), meanwhile the nsx is the best all arounder, and, considering the car from a 360 degrees stand point, it was also the best one The nsx combined ferrari's perfomances with a saloon's comfort and driveability. It was compared to the accord in terms of user friendliness and comfort. It was the easiest to drive while going slow and fast, it was comfy, had a few more electrical accessories, was less stiff... The 348 had a more precise and communicative steering, understeered less (although oversteered more, which is harder to catch), was a bit more agile, was just as fast on a straight line, and on corners had just a little bit of an advantage. It also was the most enjoyable car to drive, as it was the most similar to a race car, also due to the very stiff (even too much for british streets) setup, and immersed you in the driving experience more than the others. The only thing is that it was hard to drive, the hardest alongside the 911. Nobody said the car lacked grip, but it was difficult to use 100%, or close, of it. It was nervous on bumps and snapped rather quickly, meanwhile the nsx understeered progressively. It's a car you have to know well before pushing, otherwise you're just asking for troubles I get both who likes and who doesn't these characteristics. On a side you have a nice and rewarding challenge, but on the other you risk crashing. That's also why many said the 348 was more at home at the track rather than in the streets

Nice commentary. As the 26 year owner of a 348, and also a 355, a 360, a 430, a 16M, a 575SA, and an F50, I would like to add that: 1) a 348 has a stouter motor than a 355. 2) the car is more dependable than any sports car I’ve ever owned. They just don’t break. 3) It was much faster than the hot-hatches in its day. 4) stay away from the dealers for annual maintenance and slow down the frequency a little, you’ll be fine, and you’ll find the 348 a very inexpensive exotic to own! 😊 Otherwise a very nice and fair report.

Interesting your assessment of the 348’s size compared to the F355. It is literally the same car, you can pull a door off a F355 and put it on a 348. Perhaps you’ve got more headroom in your F355 because it’s a Spider and the 348 is a ts (the removable roof means a bit less headroom vs. the fixed roof of a tb). This particular 348 comes across as a bit lackluster, to be honest. I was on track with my 348 and could keep up with a 360 Challenge Stradale on the straight. Could be that a previous owner has fettled with it, I don’t know, but the engine of the 348 is quite strong and actually has a better torque distribution than the F355 or 360.

Nice assessment, fairly fair and well presented. I will venture to say a couple of things as I have driven more than one 355, and more than one 348. I own a 1994 348GTB which is the last evolution of the 348, by this time a lot of things were improved on. Anyway, I am going to venture to say the car you are driving very likely has shot inner steering rack bushes. The 348 steering is not and should not be that heavy and or cumbersome when driving even at low speeds, it also should have pin-point accuracy with a very lively, precise and satisfying feel. If it does not feel like that then there is something not right in the steering rack, and this is quite common. I wish I was in the UK, I'd let you have a drive of my 348!! I think you'd be surprised. There is a way to wake the engine up a bit and get some more perk out of it, and that is to de-cat it and put a sports exhaust on it, mine has a KSG Valve-tronic, it makes quite a difference. Also by fitting a better intake system, this can also help. Both 355's (both Motronic 5.1 cars) I drove didn't feel night and day quicker than my 348, although obviously they were and well, that noise!! But then again, at 7-7500 in my 348 is quite nice which you did touch upon, it has more of a classic 1970's F1 sound, the 355 has a more screamy and more modern sound...... I think its great there are some road tests on the 348 showing they are not a dog, they are incredibly fun to drive. I like my 348 when I'm really pressing on, it comes alive, and I venture to say although they can be outpaced in acceleration by many cars, driving a Ferrari is so much more than pure acceleration, once you're at high speeds, things change and the 348 is in its element, they can be quite quick cars when properly unleashed..... I chose the 348 over the 355 because I like the simplicity of the 348 as I do all my own mechanical work and servicing, you can still have that great Ferrari driving experience at sensible speeds in the 348.......As for Luca's comments in the press, pfft, Ferrari have never made a dog of a car!! He's crazy!!

This car was a massive jump forward from the gorgeous, but long-in-the-tooth 328 It looks fantastic and, imo better then the 355. Reading some recent reviews the steering is way better than the 355, although there’s no doubt the engine upgrade makes a big difference I’m sure. Rather then compare backwards in line-up, you need to go forwards - I realise this is difficult for a 355 owner, but will you discuss the really slow and really antiquated interior of the 328, or get all nostalgic and mention Magnum (yes that was a 308) like everyone else seems to? I think the 348 unjustly gets a bad wrap and the ‘is it really as bad’ title is getting a bit repetitive now as all the KZbinrs do it (except Hoovie) and always end up saying ‘actually no its not, its good’. Really like you work Damian, but this was a bit too predictable.
@petei39722 жыл бұрын
I think it's predictable because so many people have been told the 348 isn't much good, often by people who haven't ever been behind the wheel of one, but when they actually drive one themselves they find out it's a complete blast. At the end of the day they are fun to drive, admittedly slower than what came afterwards but significantly quicker (particularly on a track) than what came before, look pretty good to my eye, sound fantastic with the right exhaust, are really easy to work on and essentially great to own. I'm not sure what else you really need from an older sports car.

I must say 348 and F355 are really close to my heart. So I went to the dealership last year and test drove both straight after another. Starting with a black over black 348. The looks to me is even better and exciting in the flesh than the F355 which still was in a beautiful combination of dark grey over bordeaux interior. I must say it was hard to drive, especially the gear shift is heavy, it didn’t appeal to me at all. Then I drove F355 which was a GTS with F1 paddles. Slightly better, but I felt disappointed with both, which is mainly based on not getting any thrills with the acceleration. Verdict: Drive your all time favourite poster car always before paying the money ;) But that was just my experience. No doubt about what they have been back in the day, especially the F355...

Fair and honest review but I have to slightly disagree with your comment on the steering. I've owned my 348ts for 10 years and think one of its standout features is its steering. It just gives you so much feedback and you know it will go exactly where you point it. Of course, it's no 355 but then again, not much is! Overall, it's a fun Ferrari and will still put a smile on your face when you take it for a 'spirited' run - I've thoroughly enjoyed my ownership and absolutely love it. Having said all that, I'm currently moving onto a 360 Spider but only because it feels like the right time for me and I will be sad to see it go.

Yes again, as I read through the comments, this steering assessment comes up, I own a 348GTB and have driven a few 355's too, and as i have commented a couple of times, I think the steering rack in the test car might have worn inner bushes, quite common and can make the steering feel the way it was described......If I wasn't on the other side of the world I would submit my 348 for a follow up test!!

In the series, I am an odd human. I own a F355 Berlinetta and I prefer the 348 and in particular the GTB with F355 wheels because I think it drives better with larger tyres than with the original ones. I am one of the rare owners of 355 who doesn't seem to love it despite thinking it is beyond beautiful. But having raced in my youth and being a Porsche guy, the steering of the 355 is just too numb, too assisted and the suspensions are too floaty. For me it is a comfortable GT in drag with no torque down low, an amazing sound that you really don't get to hear very often because the gears are too long for the road so 1st 2nd gear is the only one you can use if you want to hear the nice notes as you will be above the speed limit in 3rd (straight pipe as soon as the exhaust valve opens! Not environmentally friendly!). With regards to your 308 video, I own a 328 GTS and I don't think it is as pretty but I think it is better, just as raw, faster, more reliable, sounds great too. For the looks I would take the 308, for the drive and ownership I picked the 328. And, unlike with the 355, I am hooked on the 328, it is retro but in such a charming way and much closer to a (vintage) Porsche experience than any Ferrari since, I am thinking 911SC Targa ... of which I co-own one with my brother but he is the keeper and lives in France so I don't get to drive it very often but I get the same vibes from the Ferrari and it is rarer and so far very reliable.

Yup. And the moniker changed to GTB/GTS and the ultra rare GTC. You can tell by looking at the taller plenum. And IIRC spacers on the rear wheels to quell the rear's tendency to get out of line. Or was it a lower offset, I fergot. Abovementioned GTC has 'F40' seats and a very fetching set of 3-piece 18" Speedlines. All 348 Spider have the engine and geo changes.

I had a 328GTB, drove a 348 at Thruxton circuit at a BP product launch and now own a 458 Spider. I also found the 348 a bit twitchy near the limit. I believe that was improved with front axle spacers. The thing I like about Ferraris is the sense of occasion when driving them. I've owned E-Types, Lotus Esprit Turbos and a Europa and the Ferraris have an edge in this respect. This part of driving and owning a car could become more and more important as traffic and legislation continue to bear down on us. I'll still enjoy my 458 as it howls, screams and blats through the gears even if an EV whizzes relatively silently past me as I'm sure they will.

Dog-leg gear box was absurd, as was the switchgear (as you pointed out, Damian) But I always liked the look of this car and it's not really fair to dismiss it because it's successor is better...if we did that, people would denounce the 430 Scud because the 458 was better? GREAT VID! Please keep them coming. 👍🏻

Good review and interesting to hear how you compare it against your F355. I think these are underrated and often given a negative view by people who have never driven them. Like you, I love those side vents and cars with pop up lights are so cool. Keep those Ferraris coming 👍

I want to echo the words of CW, because I agree 110%, this is one of my favorite channels on KZbin and it deserves to have 10 times the amount of subscribers that it currently has listed. It really bothers me that other channels, you know the ones I’m talking about, the ones with wealthy youngsters that can afford to purchase a new exotic every other month, think they are doing a proper review by simply driving it fast, or modifying it in some unGodly way or a stupid wrap job and then get rid of it or trash it, yet they know nothing of the car! And don’t get me started when these youngsters attempt to review a classic car…that’s just comical and yet these channels have half a million plus or for some well over a million subscribers! My God people watch “quality” channels, like this one or Harry’s Garage, Jay Leno’s Garage, and so many others that deserve the high numbers…okay, enough venting, thank you for reading 😉

348 - if you know, you know… Some clarifications and additional info: - If you ring it out it’s fast enough. the power band is right at the top end. Most don’t have the balls to wring it out beyond 6k, and so it feels slow. - The steering is probably the highlight of the car - feels like a go kart - 348 and 355 are 90% the same car. Ferrari and lazy journalists would have you believe otherwise - the chassis, brakes, front suspension design are basically shared between the two - later models received the same rear suspension geometry as 355s - The engine is basically the same. 355 revs higher and has a higher peak power, but most 355s make 340hp vs 380hp, so the difference isn’t so great. Ferrari have never made a bad engine… - It has Bilstein coilovers as stock from the factory. - The LDM criticism of the car was just what new CEOs do - criticise the predecessors work…

I never understood the hate for the 348, to me the F355 just revs higher (and yes goes faster) but is also softer on the looks. The 348 to me is just perfect Ferrari.

The real problem was Acura NSX came was out at the time and was so good that it made 348 look unpolished. And to add the 355 that came after was amazing orders of magnitude better.

I have to say that I much prefer the design of this era of Ferrari to their cars nowadays and the fact they were still raiding the Fiat parts bin at this time. Great series Damian 👍😎

The 348ts is a good car, the issue is the maintenance cost during my ownership. Every 3 year engine out belt changes are irresponsible. My two bills were $7.9k and $8.4k, and I’d had enough and sold it. I purchased an ‘02 Acura NXS, and although not as sexy or soul stirring, the operating costs have been a rounding error by comparison.

Lovely trip down memory lane - I owned one of these in the mid nineties and so wish I’d kept it for much longer. My car was identical to this one ( got me wondering if it was THAT car) and I remember the sticking throttle pedal too! Great video Damian. Appreciate the nostalgia and insight.

Excellent video. Small correction, I think the t refers to a transverse gearbox as the engine was longitudinal in contrast to the 328/308.

I so nearly bought one last year, honestly my favourite Ferrari shape, sounds great too! I just don't trust the thing to not catastrophically break, I have fairly deep pockets but I fear not deep enough for one of these to blow up lol

I have owned a 348ts since 2008. It has been very reliable. Nothing mechanical has gone wrong with it. Of course, you have the sticky buttons but that can be easily rectified.

@@lolmeercatz10 Had my TS for more than 10 years now, nothing major has happened. They're very easy to work on anyway so as long as you don't mind getting your hands oily many things can be fixed quite easily at home. The global 348 'network' is out there to give advice (known as the Brotherhood) and has to be the most active of any Ferrari model, there's literally nothing someone else hasn't fixed and can help you with.
@sultanoftippoo38572 жыл бұрын
TBH although I’ve never owned a 348 I’ve had nothing but good experiences with my 1995 F355. As with any older car, do your research and follow these simple rules. It won’t guarantee you won’t see any issues but you’ll massively reduce your chances of buying a dud. 1: spend £300-400 on a comprehensive pre purchase inspection from a reputable Ferrari specialist (independent of where you are buying the car from) 2: ensure the car has a fully documented history where servicing has been done by a Ferrari dealership or independent Ferrari specialist. No disrespect to any home mechanics out there but it’s not worth taking the chance on the potential of amateur repairs ie: KZbin is littered with folk who change cambelts but forget to change the tensioners. 3: use the documented history (MOT certificates etc) to show the car has been regularly used - if you live in a cold/wet climate ask the current owner how often the car is fired up and run in the winter (lack of use is the biggest killer for any car especially an old Ferrari). I’m sure other people have their take but those are the top three things I’d highlight when looking for any car. Happy hunting.

the 348 ts was my third Ferrari. Just like Car and Driver said, high speed handling was evil. It was if it was tuned for the track, so darty I never got it past 135 mph. The steering and brakes were amazing and it was reliable though as in my 308 and 328, radiator relay switches went out. One thing: When I first got the car, there was something missing for me and it took me a while to figure it out. As it did not have a high wheel arch, the flat fenders dove forward. From the drivers seat, I did not enjoy what I now call the LeMans Frame....named after the great movie. What do I mean? The 308 and 328 had the fender lines on each side fill the lower ends of the windshield, giving me that perspective of a rear mid engine race car visual feel...something personal for sure but I thought you might like reading about such a Ferrari nuance.

What I really don't get is why they so distinctly made a mini-Testarossa out of it, whereas before and after Ferrari never did that designwise: each car stood on their own...

I had MY92 348TS back in 1995, which I swapped out of 308GTS qv. It was a major step up in internal quality and switchgear. Felt quick at the time but of course when hot hatches have same power nowadays, I guess people may look down on it. The design was “of its time” and refreshing when compared to equivalent Porsche 964/933… and of course it evolved into the 355 so some respect is warranted because it affectively is “genesis” of current cars 👍🏻

Great review. Love this new series. I think the 348 is great value. You get a lot of the Ferrari experience for the money. The F355 will always be one of the greatest Ferrari's of all time and has cast a bit of a shadow over the 348 since.
