Was Ferrari's 348 Fit to Replace the 308?

The Ferrari 348 was not initially well received, it struggled to follow on from the very successful 308 and first reviews were not kind. But today how do the two cars compare? I drive both and discuss technical details to work out if the 348 really is a worthy successor.

I remember when the 308 and the 246 were unloved and considered 'not real Ferraris' and now look at the values... Time, rarity and nostalgia do amazing things to people perceptions. I think the 348 has aged really well and is indeed a handsome beast. 🤔

Let's face it, for most of us watching Jack drive two Ferraris on a glorious day, we can only dream of owning either of these cars and wouldn't say no to the opportunity if it was given. I have to admit though that having seen a few videos recently about the 348 it is growing on me. Love the 308/328 styling, child of the 80's, but the 348 isn't looking too shabby in 2021. Great video.

Thanks for a very balanced review of the two cars. I had a 1994 308GTSQV from 1996 until 1990 when I exchanged it for a new 348TS. A year later, I exchanged that for another new 348TS. The 308 was gorgeous to look at, fun to drive, but not very sophisticated. The 348 cars felt more capable, better engineered in many ways. My wife and I took the second 348 on a trip to Italy, back to the factory in Maranello. Driving the Ferrari in Italy was an intriguing experience, people in villages waved as we went by. There's so much pride in Ferrari in Italy. I'll never forget the sound as we drove through tunnels with the roof off - that intoxicating engine note bouncing off the tunnel walls! And, coming home, an early morning French autoroute was deserted and we enjoyed quite a long way at an indicated 170mph, at which the car felt completely stable and glued to the road. Memories are made of trips like that!

The 348 is the sweet spot for me ageing like a fine wine . More refined and quicker than the 308 but not as sanitised as the 355 plus more affordable than both. Unfortunately the current market conditions have put all of them out of reach for me. I was however vicariously living the dream with Jack. Two classic Ferraris, a hot summers day, gently twisty B roads and the targa roofs off. What’s not to like?!

Thanks for a very fair review of the 348! I am a 348 owner and you seemed to summarise things pretty well. I hope the gearbox eased up a bit as you got it warmer - but it doesn’t change like your 308 appears to do. I find the higher profile tyres on the 348 give it a pretty good ride (great with pilot sport 4S), but the best thing about it is you can really enjoying pressing on and still only do very reasonable speeds.

Also, many cars have never had their gearbox cables serviced, and so the lubrication inside of them is mostly gone by now, after almost 30 years. I took mine out, gave them a good clean to remove old goo, and lubed them with PTFE and now they are MILES better. I absolutely recommend doing it.

Great to see another review of the 348. It’s a gem. You have an early car there, pre-suspension and weight changes. Later tb & ts cars have 6 nuts at the top of the suspension and battery in the front. Power upgrades came in the GTB/S. Loads of cheaper LHD cars around but Uk RHD cars are very rare imported in very small numbers and a lot have been thrashed and crashed.

I always aspired to a 348 because it really looks like a junior Testarossa. But then things went my way and, long story short, I have a Testarossa now. I adore it, but for pure driving pleasure I expect the 348 beats it. But then, Frankenlise fills the “pure driving pleasure” role, so maybe Jack SHOULD buy a Testa! I intend to maintain the Testa myself. Would love to have Jack on the journey with me. 😎

Agree The rear end of the 348 is much nicer than the 355 which lacks contrast and looks all too plastiky.. Also the streaked on the side of the car adds character. I think the advent of Honda’s NSX exposed the 348’s and indeed ferraris lack of refinement which is why it received less than favourable reviews.

Nice comparison Jack. One correction: nothing about the 308 design was determined by the needs of the GT4. In fact the GTB design was already done before the GT4 was even built and it was a direct evolution of the 246 Dino. It's release was delayed because they wanted to make it fiberglass but had quality problems with the GRP that they were never able to fully overcome. The rear seat of the GT4 was accommodated by simply lengthening the chassis by about 8 inches and moving the front seats a bit forward and more upright. The back seat proved popular enough though that the GT4 design went on as the Mondial until 1993, being built alongside the 348 and even evolving to the same engine and driveline setup.

I have a '91 348TS and absolutely love the car. In today's age, people have learned that the knocks against the car back in the day are really unfounded...probably from the non-owner keyboard commandos (or whatever they were called in 1989, haha) that were resistant to the considerable change from the 328, and some of that comes because the 308/328 is one of the best styled cars ever, way ahead of general auto styling in the 70's. I describe the car as a 300HP go-cart. Such a blast to drive and you can't go to the gas station without someone wanting to take a picture. It slides very centered and balanced too with a little counter-steer, it doesn't give much warning before a slide but it comes on very smoothly and does it with all 4 at once. It's reliable and pre-ODB2 which is nice. For the average user, a major engine out service is really only needed every 8 years or so, not the ridiculous 3 years that some people chirp about. 348 values are on the rise, and for good reason!! Cheers.

Great video Jack. If you anyone is looking at A 348, if you can, look a little bit further at the 355. I remember back in 1995 I test drove a 348 at Maranello and loved it, however, I subsequently purchased a left-hand drive 355 GTS for a similar price. A short time after I returned to Marenello to visit the service centre and I bumped into the sales guy, feeling a little embarrassed I apologised to him for not buying the 348. However, and I remember to this day just how professional and passionate about Ferrari he was. He said to me not to worry, he said the main thing was that I had joined the Ferrari family and went on to say that is was actually a much better car than the 348! Wish I still owned it!

As a 1993 348TB owner, I have to say I am really impressed with this review. Both the 308 and 348 are iconic parts of the Ferrari mid engined V8 lineage and hold their own special place. This car must be an earlier one than mine, somewhere along the line one of the things Ferrari changed was the gearbox, the later cars have a much better gear change. My gearbox is not even close to being notchy or hard to change gear. It does take about 10 miles to fully come to operating temp, and when it does its smooth and easy. June 1992 Ferrari changed to the Brembo brakes, same as the 355, they also changed the geometery of the rear suspension, so the sub-frames are slightly different from earlier cars, they changed the front and rear track, this changed the handling significantly. To cure some electrical issues they changed from AC Delco to Nippon Denso alternators, wiring, fuse box and ancillaries, this improved reilability immensely. Post 1992 cars have different fuel pumps, higher fuel pressure regulators as well. They changed the way the side strakes attached to the doors as well. Euro 348's have 312hp factory, the USA models have 300hp. The rare 1994 348TGTB and GTS as well as the 1994 Spider have F119H engine which is a higher compression engine with 320hp, they have the same Motronic 2.7 ECU's that the early 355's have. I love my 348, funnily enough I originally was looking for a 308GTS but they have become extremely expensive and after driving a few 348's the same things came to me as this review, and those things to me are really important. I love the driving experience the 348 offers. When you look at it on its own, the typical Pininfarina/Ferrari design cues are all there, they have come into their own and yep, the prices are going up. Nice review, I really enjoyed it!!

I owned that very 348 TS (H311 EFB) from 2014 to 2017 - So good to see her again! Cleaning the air vents with 200 cans of solvent, and a million cotton wool buds (at least that's what it seemed like!), to remove the sticky plastic was a complete ball ache of a job! Only issue I ever had with the gearbox was 2nd gear when cold (simply wasn't available for the first few miles), so you just went 1st to 3rd. Otherwise, yes you had to be more forceful with your gear changes than with most cars, but I drove her in rush hour traffic, on the open road, all over the place, and never had any issues with the gear change - And I've got skinny arms! (might need the cables adjusting). As for comfort in the car - If you took the roof panel out from behind the seats you'd have more room (I'm just over 6'1", so couldn't have the roof behind the seats. I found an ultra rare folding soft top roof panel, which sat nicely on the parcel shelf behind the seats when not in use, and the seats could go back to the bulkhead. Still got the roof panel - I might own a 348 TS again one day - Currently own a 328 GTS) The 348 seats are the most comfortable seats I have ever known in any car!

Jack another superb review, think I've said it before and still maintain without doubt that you make the best car review videos on YT bar none, light hearted yet very informative, and you have the right manner and engagement and come across so well, absolutely zero arrogance unlike some channels. Anyway, this video is extremely pertinent as I'm currently looking to buy a 348 TS having changed from searching for a 328 GTS. Short story is while the 328 is drop dead gorgeous, prices have gone up so much in the last 18 months, and a 348 makes so much sense in every way including importantly value for money. I've driven a 348 and can relate and testify to your account here - the gear change requires additional effort and I will need to weight train my left arm, its a character of this car. Although it has 300BHP and does accelerate well, compared to my 2017 Audi TTS which also has just over 300BHP from a turbo-charged 2-litre, it is nowhere near as fast as the TTS, however thats not the point of the 348 as you rightly point out, its about driving engagement and feel, not just speed between a-to-b - a 348 is about so much more, the experience is all around the steering feedback and handling, intoxicating engine and exhaust note especially when accelerating hard, just being in something that feels so special and different. I adore the 348 which is so of its time and I love that. Nothing ever looked like the 348 and Testarossa/512TR before or after, and that also makes it a special little car. Keep your vids coming!!! :-)

I think you've got this spot on, essentially the 348 is 'of it's time' and most people who criticise it simply don't get the car. I have had my 308 for a week or so now. You're not wrong about the doors. They shut so amazingly. Even compared to my NSX. I won't lie, I was surprised by this. I am really enjoying the 308. Houston streets are terrible, and frankly, the soft suspension is much more pleasant to drive than the stiffer NSX setup (granted, mine has aftermarket suspension, so that's partly my fault). The engine is so, so smooth and revs so wonderfully. Mine doesn't shift so good, hoping its bushings or something simple, but I can imagine it being amazing. Definitely not disappointed in my choice.

Go through the gearshift bushings, stripping, clean, and re lubricate. The pivot at the base of the gear lever is the most important though. Drain the old transmission oil - both diff and gearbox and replace with Amsoil 75/90 gear oil. it will make a huge difference. ( one very happy 308 GT4/456 owner & ex Eurocar garage owner).

Cool video Jack. I would love one of each for different reasons. I have always loved the 348. The one thing I would say is the character of the GTB is quite different from the GTS. The GTB does feel a lot more capable to tackle tight, twisty roads quickly. The main issue is the speed of the steering rack but the throttle can be used in addition to rotate the GTB.

The controls of the 348 are indeed heavy - although changing gear does become easier after the gearbox is properly warmed up - but that’s all part of the experience. And the design is indeed very cohesive and still looks elegant. Yes, I’ve had to redo the sticky interior plastics and the engine out maintenance is what it is, but I still love looking at it, I love washing and detailing it and I love driving it. And at the price I bought it back in 2008, I wouldn’t lose any money on it if I would sell it now. But I’m not going to 😉

In my view, the 348 was a step change both mechanically, toughness and performance compared to the 308/328 - more rigid (TS/GTS versions) and a more mature . Opinions vary about the 348, but I would own one (nearly did add one alongside my 328) in preference to to the more complex and technical 355. Agree with Jack, they are now stunning cars, compact and reliable if you can source the right car from one of the respected independents, who only source the best cars with 100% provenance. And sounds best without an aftermarket exhaust. Suggest the gearchange in the model feature may require attention, friends was excellent? Very good review, enjoyed it very much !!

Actually, the 348 did borrow the power layout from a four seater: the Mondial T, although they were produced simultaneously. Also, its worth mentioning the differences in maintenance costs. 308/328 have virtually bulletproof engines that can have belts changed in the car. 348 is quite a bit lower on the reliability chart and a belt change is engine out and wallet emptied.

What people do not realise, is that Ferrari designed the engine to be removed easily, the whole rear sub assembly comes out and makes the "engine out" service so easy. The first time I did the engine out service on my 348 it literally took me 3hrs to remove the engine, and I took my time. The next time I do it, I reckon it will be 2hrs to remove. Its not hard, its very straight forward. I do this in my small garage with a scissor lift.
@johnireland8992

@@kev-the-windsurfer. That works great if you do your own servicing. But in a shop, that is two more hours of labor to take it out...and at least that to put it back in. At the going shop rate of $250, that is four hours, or a thousand dollars in extra labor, plus the cost of the service.

I^ve got the 328 one month agoand let me tell you, what a treat when you drive this car. My personal choice to buy the 328 and not the 348 was that I think the conic air intakes and 5 star rims are more aesthetic than the "stripe air intake" and 348 rims, the 328 is known for being more reliable (I'm not good about mechanical stuff) and the 80s interior is also more my taste (child of the 80s). Of course if I could choose, I would have the 308 interior and the rest from the 328. Also big plus the engine is installed that you easily get to the belts, while the 348 will surely cost a bit more, since access to the belts was not possible without getting the engine out.

I'm just back from holiday in Scotland and I had the fortune of seeing both a 348 and some modern Ferrari, I don't know it's name because I couldn't care less. I didn't give the modern car a second look, on the other hand I made a detour to see the 348 drive through a village and I slowed right down to see it park. I'd have a 348 any day of the week and twice on Sunday over the modern stuff. Their interiors look like cheap and nasty theme park ride.

Both beautiful machines in their own right. I don’t think of describing either as dated, it’s just how they were and better isn’t best. I really like the 348; compact and sounds awesome which to me does looks a step forward in design from the Testarossa. The 458 Italia appears a continued paired down yet beefed up evolution of this particular gene pool, which is my favourite Ferrari. Best wishes!

Takes the same time 2nd-3rd, as red bull take to change 4 wheels nowadays 🤣 You mentioned the comparative slowness of the 308 (white van and roundabout) but I don't think you commented similarly on the 348. Where does it sit? So I understand, compare it to the 147 you own ( I have a 156)

Your video is so much better, more informative, more observing, and doing it side-by-side with the 308 is a great idea, since it really demonstrates the steps Ferrari were making and how it all came to be.

348 was the secret, now it's out and the car has 2x in value in just 2 years. I remember when these were 50k in the states not too long ago, now they are 100k, and in the same range as an F1 F355 or 360. Hell, you could get a beat up Testarossa, 456, 550, or even a 599 for these prices. Unbelievable so many people couldn't see the value except for me, and of course I never bought one.

They are still $50k in the US. Check the BaT history on these, a bunch crossed the block last year between $42k and $55k and they certainly weren't rubbish condition. There's one on auction right now sitting pretty at $45.5k and I'm slapping myself on the wrist every third hour because I want to put a bid in but I already have one early '90s sports car superstar and no "normal" transportation since my Audi got smashed.

You need to check your steering column; mine never moved like that! Many Italian cars used to have that long-arm short leg driving position, and tight pedal boxes, as they worked to a different anthropomorphic model, shall we say. The 348 sounds like it has an aftermarket exhaust; that's a very worthwhile upgrade as the standard one was very quiet to meet US Federal drive-by noise regulations. The 348 gearbox shouldn't be particularly stiff, so that's probably an issue with that individual car. Similarly the 348 steering should be fabulous. If it's not there may be some wear or the geometry is a bit out.

Very nice video indeed, always been a fan of 348 style despite all negative reviews and comments. One thing though would be interesting to know: maintenance costs. Would anyone be able to confirm 348 is definitely an expensive car to maintain? I have a 964 and do max 5k per year. Would like to get an idea of a well sorted 348 how much more would cost over a 964
@kev-the-windsurfer.

The 348 is actually a very reliable car. If its properly maintained and driven often you'll have minimal issue, no more than any other car. The engine out is not a big deal at all. If you are a DIY you can do it yourself. I did mine, takes 3hrs to get the engine out, which when it is out, makes it esier to do a lot of other things to it whilst out. I took my time doing my one, and I reakon it took me about 4 days, but I did a lot of other things to it as well.....Do not let the engine out service put you off the car. Ferrari designed the engine to come out for service, the whole rear sub frame drops out, with the tansaxle, rear suspension. It is literally 12 bolts on the bukhead, another 8 bolts on the strut towers and rear frame. Disconnect 2 cooling hoses, one brake line, one clutch line, ABS sensors, Oil cooler lines, take the AC compressor off (can string it up without evacuating the gas), and thats pretty much it, she comes right out. I built a trolley for it to sit on with castor wheels so I could move it around, job done!!

The 348 looks good only in its original - colour over black - make-up, but shame the dynamics were tricky on the limit. Adding spacers and lowering the car makes it look even worse. The later mono colour 348s are colour sensitive too imho. Better dynamics but not by much. Out of these two series cars, I'd choose a 308/328 over the 348.
