In my opinion the 348 is one of the prettiest and most under appreciated Ferrari of its time, I prefer the 80s styling over the 355 and other later V8 Ferrari. Not that I care but of course, the 355 is superior in performance and handling, which is a pretty car as well compared to later Ferraris. But the 348 has these sharper and cleaner lines that truly define an era of Italian design. Also, the black sills on the early cars are reminiscent of the 70s/80s Ferraris. I also think the interior has a very pretty and minimalistic look; just look at those beautiful orange gauges and that gear shifter. Many owners decided to replace the original rims with aftermarket or 355/360 rims, but I personally think they are one of the prettiest details of the 348. Also, they do not look anything like those on the Cherokee. Finally, I don't understand Doug complaining about the rear grille covering the lights, it is just another beautiful example of 80s Ferrari styling and I prefer it over the 348 Speciale design.
@oj71775 жыл бұрын
For me this car came too late. It has all the characteristics of a mid 80s car. The exterior maybe would be too much futuristic for the 80s but its sooooo beautiful In the 90s, the people started to be more focused on quality and details and this car wasn't the best in those 2 things The cars began to be easier to drive and the 348 isn't the easiest to push to the limit If it was launched earlier it would become a great success Apologize me if i've made some mistakes lol :(
@Charlie-Charlot4 жыл бұрын
Demise, Devised I agree, to be honest I’m one of those people that actually don’t like the testarossa at all. It’s just tacky and overhyped like the Toyota Supra is. It looks like someone stomped on a 348. I understand that some people might love it for its nostalgic status but aside from that, like the Lamborghini countach, it’s not that great of a car. I might a little biased against this car but it feels so overrated and overhyped that I can’t help but don’t like it.
@Charlie-Charlot4 жыл бұрын
Demise, Devised funny you say that, about two months ago I drove a Ferrari 458 and a cayman gts. I was so hyped about the Ferrari, every told me that it was the best car they ever driven, I remembered how this car was praised in top gear, then I drove it.. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was. It felt like the car was way too easy to drive, nowhere near as raw and exciting as I thought it would be. That being said it’s still an incredible car, it’s fast, the steering is incredible responsive but it doesn’t feel that much connected to the road, it was way too comfortable in my opinion. Then I drove the Porsche, I can’t emphasize how much better this car felt. Still almost everybody I know who drove the Ferrari would swear about it. I don’t try to say that it’s a bad car, nor that the testarossa is, but the difference of attention and love some cars can receive over others really staggers me.

Despite its low ranking among enthusiasts I've always found the 348 to be one of the most attractive cars of the 90s. It was a radical departure from the design of the 328. Where the 328 was curvy, sporty and agile looking the 348's lines were sharp, clean and tight. I hesitate to call it a baby Testarossa because it's so much more beautiful. The TR with its long wheelbase, stubby rear and too much nose (crumple-zone solution?) doesn't come close to the perfectly proportioned 348. It's like they threw out the worst design elements of the big, awkward looking TR, kept the best and incorporated them into a gorgeous, compact body. Aesthetically, everything works, even the "grill" and especially the rims which were so perfectly matched it's as if the car was designed around them. Thanks, Doug. Great review.
@mattarnold1987 жыл бұрын
I think they should've made the Testarossa's tail longer to sort out the proportions, not make the entire car smaller! The side profile (particularly the profile of the doors) was done better on the Testarossa than the 348 though but my favourite distinct feature on the 348 was the one Doug criticized: the slatted rear lights cover.

Road-testers couldn’t quite match Ferrari’s claimed 5.6 seconds 0-60 mph and 171-mph top speed. Worse, they found the car a challenge to drive near or at the limit. Great video. I've watched enough of your videos to be able to tell when you're having fun and when you are driving this car you had a grin from ear to ear like a 12-year-old boy that just found his first playboy! I'm actually in the market for one right now and there is one in my little town that I live in that is for sale but 85000 American is too much so as nice as it is I just need to keep looking. They're getting difficult to find and let you plan a long trip across the country. The fact that there is one in my little town that I live in is very appealing because it's just up the street but I still cannot see myself paying $85000 for it especially with 59000 miles. However the previous owner has had it for 25 years and has all the maintenance records and he just did the belt service. And it's the red with cream and terrier like your example which is my favorite. I'll keep working on him and see if you can get it down to the 60 or 65 mark. Thank you for your video and it was fun seeing you have fun in this little throw back to the 80s/ 90s. I remember being in high school in the 80s looking at magazines, Yes we had magazines at that time and not smart phones, And just drooling over this car. I still think it looks beautiful and I love the strakes on the side. It just screams classic Ferrari and it's hard to mistake it for anything else. I love everything about it especially the raw driving experience that you can't find any more in new cars. Thanks again!

I could write a book about what is wrong with this car, just the main problems as I remember them. The throttle cable will continually get stuck outside the ferrule as the engine moves and pulls it out, this was so bad that during the first 500 miles I had to stop 10 times more to rectify this as I did to fill up with petrol. The engine would be left running at about 1500 RPM rather than tickover. Ferrari fitted about 5 new throttle cables but couldn't cure it until I told them how easy it was, fit a piece of heat shrink over it to ensure it always remained in place. They said they couldn't make any modifications that were not factory approved, so I did it myself and cured it. Any other manufacturer would have dealt with this as a safety recall issue. The rear end always wanted to go faster than the front, making the car unstable and liable to spin in the wet. Black sills and valance - ugly, I got mine painted body colour and improved the look no end. Massive wide sills, unable to get in if someone was to park next to you as the door had to be opened too wide. Steel plates bonded to the top of the sills under the doors, these were kept on with tiny self tapping screws as well as glue. No primer, satin black straight onto steel, when you wash the car the water gets trapped under the plates and rusts them away, when the rust reaches the top, the black paint peels off. Impossible to remove in one piece for remedial painting due to being glued. You need a lot of strength and a heat gun to get them off, and then they are mangled. I had a pair made of aluminium for mine. Gearbox - NO first gear until the car was warmed up. TS roof noisey and squeaks all the time when its in, you can't get in and drive the car when stored in place behind the front seats. The finish on the roof needs special treatment to keep it looking nice, otherwise it goes patchy and matt. The rubbers need silicone grease all the time to stop the squeaking noise. A very heavy car that squashed my axle stands when I tried to change a wheel. Original models had the battery in the engine compartment, the heat from the exhaust evaporated all the fluid away, leaving the battery flat. It was modified to go in the front bumper, but to get at it you had to raise the car and get the driver's side front wheel off! The alternator would fail because it was right by the exhaust and inside the panel under the engine. Later models were modified, mine had a kit supplied with new alternator, several castings, new under engine panel with ducted ventilation for the new fan assembly fitted to the new alternator. New rear wiring loom supplied but the alternator connector was too big to fit through the aperture between the engine compartment and the car so all the wires had to be removed with a special tool, the old loom cut and taped to the new loom, then slowly fed through with the alternator plug being reassembled afterwards. All engine connections had to be removed and the new look used. Almost impossible to do, I still have the special long pliers I bought to do this difficult job using a mirror! Ended up with 1 spare wire with a green rubber ending, it turned out to be the clutch on the air-con compressor, again something that is almost up against the body and well hidden from view. 3 days solid work, but it started and ran first time. (I later found out that as a customer, I shouldn't have been given this kit as it was supposed to have been fitted by the dealer!) That's enough for now, but I think this was the last car without stability control and probably the last made of steel. NOT their finest hour, and when you consider it handled as if it's in the wet when it's dry, as if it's on ice when it's wet, and don't even think about it in snow and ice. A 360 is not much different in price and has an alloy body, proper road holding and stability control, if you want to walk away from every trip, pay the extra as a 348 is really trying to kill you every chance it gets.

I love these cars! Love the wedge shape! I have a 1995 Spider and the belt service is only $10,000 if you take it to the dealer. I'm having mine done the end of this year by an independent shop and I was quoted $5995. My favorite part of this car is that it doesn't have a lot of tech stuff....and that's good because it has less stuff to break. And that stuff ALWAYS breaks.

I agree with everything you are saying Doug, I finally got my 348 after 6 months of waiting for my brother to let it go. The handling and feel of the steering is sooooo much fun. The other wonderful thing is 4th gear. This is where the real power comes into the game .. When you are doing 90 to 100 MPH in 4th there is a lot of torque .. I can jump almost a city block ahead of other cars with ease. This is my second ferrari. I had a Daytona in the 70's (12 cylinder 6X's 2 barrel carborators) .. I don't remember the Daytona feeling like the 348 which is a life-sized Go Cart !!!

@pcproa17 жыл бұрын
DavidoggL In the automotive service world, whenever you refer to the side of a car or a component placement in a car, you always refer to it as if you're sitting down from the drivers seat of the car. So rather than saying something like, the driver side headlight. You would say, the left headlight. See the problem here is that you don't know if the car is LHD or RHD. If the car were RHD but you were assuming it's LHD because you're in North America, then you would be talking about the wrong headlight. Same thing goes for when a car goes in to get its tires rotated. But if you're sitting in the driver seat and your perspective of the car is from that point, it doesn't matter if the car is LHD or RHD. The Left headlight is always the Front Left. The exact same thing applies if you are looking at a car in a video. You can't reliably relay the correct information about which side you're talking about because, are you looking at the car from the front of the car or the rear of the car? Are you pointed forwards or are you pointed backwards? So it is universally accepted that components of the car are always referred to as if you're sitting down in the drivers seat since you are always looking forward in the car.

The 80's were wild times really, and a lot of fun. .Anyone familiar with late 70's through 90's sports cars has probably come across lowering parking brake levers, too. This looks like a pretty nice car, and having driven a few Ferrari's when working on them, I have gained an appreciation of their quirks. Toni, I admit the tail lights and side intakes are what set it apart from other Ferraris. The 348 is by far my most favorite Ferrari of all time. It came out just a few months after my birth, but it's so modern looking compared to any other car that came out in the late 80s. I always felt that, compared to other Ferrari models of that period, the design was facing more towards the future instead of just resembling what was cool back then. Lamborghini did a similar approach with the Diablo, but I think the 348 still wins the competition!
