Here are the steps if it helps anyone, Remove radiator cap Flush coolant Remove radiator hoses 12mm socket remove radiator bolt either side unplug fan Remove coolant overflow hose Remove intake crossover tube Remove vent tube & ISCV, loosen on afm side +10mm bolt down low Remove spark plug wires disconnect pcv hose loosen bolts on valve cover, break loose, criss cross patter then remove unplug cable on thermostat + top of housing Remove upper timing cover Crack bolts on water pump pulley Remove power steering belt (bolt through pulley) Remove alternator belt, 3 bolts, crack loose 2 then 1 for tensioner Car in 5th gear Remove harmonic dampner and water prump pulley Remove lower timing covers Remove spart plugs CLEAN Screwdriver in cyclinder one Crank to TDC Lock cams in place with wrenches and vice grips UNplug wires, PS sensor, coolant lines, 5th gear remove crank shaft bolt + ebrake on full Loosen 14mm on TB tensioner Remove TB spring Take belt off Remove tensioner + Idler Remove cams, use wrench to hold Remove backing plate behind cams Remove waterpump 2x 12mm bolts on side Remove timing gear Pull out main seal New seal in, spring facing in Remove cam seal cam caps Remove cam seals Put caps back on, correct sides, check torque, don't over tighten Oring on side housing Gasket side of WP housing Reinstall side bolts Reinstall cam back plate woodruff key in Timing gear back on Install new timing belt idler and then tensioner Push tensioner + hand tighten bolt Install sprint pliers to peg Cam gears, Left I facing upwards, Right E facing upwards screw on cams push tensioner other way and snug to hold in place. 1 min video on installing belt reinstall timing belt guide Remove wrenches from cams Loosen 14mm on tensioner to release and tension Tighten tensioner back up lower + top covers WP pulley, hand tight Harmonic damper Valve cover gasket Silicone on cam caps and Cas Tighten valve cover bolts in specific order look up online Connect PCV valve Install spark plugs plug wires Accessory belts back on Belt tension, heighten until enough tension, 1 cm movement Snug up WP pulley bolts Torque crank bolt 116 to 122 lbs Install radiator Plug in fans Coolant overflow Air instake pipe SCV hose and Valce cover vent hose Upper + lower rad hose Small coolant house from thermostat Refill coolant Bring car up to temp with cap off, add coolant as necessary

I’m a 16 year old who just bought my first car a few months ago it’s a 1.8l 1994 Miata. When I bought it I knew it had some oil leaks on the front of the engine after saving enough money I finally started to order parts and tools. After watching this video for the 20th time I started to take things out and put the new parts in. It took me a total of about 20 hours over four days (5 hours per day) to complete the task. This is also the first time I worked on my car other than just a oil change. Thank you so much for this video it was a real life saver whenever I forgot where something went or could not get something off like the alternator/water pump belt. I am sure if you are mechanically inclined and have worked on cars before you could do it in half the time it took me but I am very happy with the results of my project and I very much appreciate the video Greg.

I've admittedly gotten myself in a little over my head grabbing a Miata with plans to work on every single piece by myself with help from a master tech with very limited time on both our hands, but this video has helped me make sure I've found a shop that wasn't going to wallop me on the pricing of labor when I've already purchased the part. Had a shop that is well rated that does mods, dynos, body work, paint, and all sorts of other fun odds and ends for enthusiasts and they quoted me on the job and came back with some strange estimates. They came bak at about $750 to replace the timing belt and the water pump which is about par for the course around me (I had that done to my Subie recently that *didn't* also get a timing belt redone) but then they added on $81 for replacing the valve cover gasket, $61 for replacing the thermostat, among other charges for literally every other piece that is not the timing belt or water pump to the tune of often $30= minimum, implying ~20+ minutes each if their labor rate is $100/hr. So while I haven't had the time to do this myself, I was able to find a shop that was willing to do the work that also didn't need to try to throw in goofy charges for small pieces and I was able to use some of that difference to pay the tech directly for their work. Quality video and the others that have ben uploaded on maintaining the car have been super helpful!

Hey man, Idk if you’ll see this but I’m a 14 year old that bought a 1994 Miata and it was overdue for this service. I watched your video tons of times over a couple of months and finally built up the courage to do it. It took me about a month and I would work until I got frustrated and then come back later. While I had the engine covers off I also painted them and they look great. Today I started it for the first time after the belt and pump replacement and it felt like one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. It ticked for a minute and as the oil circulated it sounded better and better. I’m going to be using your other videos to help too, like the window bushing one so I can fix my noisy window. I just wanted to let you know that this tutorial helped me and many other people and I am thankful for it being there to guide me through the process and for you taking the time to help people like this.

Just some tips for anyone with VVT engines: To take off the valve cover, you need to remove the banjo bolt on the back left of the valve cover (big bolt connected to vvt line), then lift straight up. When removing vvt cam gear, the t25 screws are pretty tight, so be careful. For setting up the timing on the vvt gear, there is a dash mark that lines up with the mark on the cover behind it. You can’t do the 19 teeth check. Those are all the differences. Good luck!

GREAT job showing the cam timing! Other websites show the wrong marks. You got it correct! Exhaust cam "E" goes straight up, and the "I" on the exhaust cam lines up with the backing plate. Your vids are a permanent record on how to do it correctly. My future grandchildren will thank you!

Just a tip: Installing cam seals by installing the cam caps after the seals are in place can cause a "pinch" that leads to a leak. This is uncommon but it does happen. As inconvenient as it seems, you're better off pressing those seals in the "conventional" way. Apart from that, this is a pretty damn good guide.

Only thing I would add to the timing belt replacement, is the point where you loosen, then tighten the tensioner pulley. The manual says to fully retract the tensioner, tighten the bolt. Rotate the crank 1 + 5/6 of a turn, where the crank notch lines up with a different mark on the block. Loosen the tensioner bolt to allow the tensioner to retract, then tighten the bolt.

PRO TIP!! Literally. From a mechanic. If you have only one cam in your engine, or your cams don't have flat surfaces like Miatas, what you can do to lock the top end is to get a piece of paper and pull one of the cam caps off and put it over the cam cap surface and re-tighten. What this does is almost completely lock the top end with no threat of damage or headache. I'm not a Miata owner, but I love watching videos like this.

Your videos consistently have the right balance between details and length. Excellent tutorial. Compared to doing this job on a MR2 AW11, V6 Camry, or a V6 Highlander (hardest yet), it looks like a dream job in the Miata. You are more thorough on replacing parts than most repair shops (I would have inspected / replaced the plugs and belts, but you did mention that). Miata looks like a great car to learn much of this type of repair work on; mechanically simple and easy access as a result of engine configuration.

Just did did my timing belt and water pump after my water pump started to leak like crazy. Also did tensioner and idler bearings, all accessory belts, radiator, all hoses, thermostat, rad cap, and while I had it apart I repainted every bracket cover pulley... ect to get rid of any rust and make it look showroom clean! It was the first big job I ever did by myself and though it was a lot of work it was also a great learning experience, and I think I could do it again way easier! Had an issue with the new bearings being really noisy/whiny, I thought maybe I over tensioned timing belt so I went in 3 or 4 times to adjust it to no success, took it to a mechanic in town who is on his 9th Miata and he diagnosed it as the brand new parts I got being bad! :O and then when he ordered new ones they were bad too, finally got a 3rd set and they are much quieter, although still make a bit of noise but I think it's certainly acceptable now. Though it kinda sucked to accept defeat and have a mechanic look at it, it was also nice to have him look over my work and tell me it looked like I did a good job!

Some general points, This is an awesome time to CLEAN everything down there. Also if you do a coolant reroute you can remove the thermostat housing and use a welsh plug (so much tidier) Also with water pump seals and rocker cover seals use gasket glue, use a torque wrench if you're new. But remember CLEAN everything

Just did this yesterday. Took my time, and ran out of daylight as I started later in the day. My garage doesn't have electricity, so I finished today. It ran before but I didn't know when the timing belt had been done so I swapped it out and it runs smooth as before. Hi Greg, I have always wanted a Miata, and this video convinced me to pick up an older one that might need some work. You broke a deep dive project into small, easy to follow steps. After purchasing one that had a significant oil leak back in October, I spent the past week tackling this job all the way down to the front main seal. I am happy to report that even though I forgot to properly torque the water pump pulley at first, the job was a success and I have no more oil leak! Great video! I’m in the middle of doing this job however I can’t t the crank bolt off. I’m in fifth gear, e brake is on tight, and wheels on the ground. Did anyone else run into this problem? I just can’t get the thing loose. Update: bought the flying Miata tool to help take it off and it worked wonders. My car is up and running.

I use a long breaker bar put it against the frame, stand clear and hit the starter. its sounds a little crazy but it works 99% of the time.

I do have one question for you: Installing the crank bolt - is there enough compression while in gear and E brake on to get the torque needed on the crank bolt? I've watched at least a dozen Miata timing belt videos this week and yours is by far the best IMO. I'm halfway through the job on my car and really glad that I came across this before I got to the belt replacements and timing adjustment. I've got an 02 VVT though, any advice on the intake cam? Once the torx screws come off the cap of the silver thingy on top of the sprocket I'm hoping I'll find similar markings to do the timing. Thanks for your work on the vids, they're great!

+glenn phenicie Try to find the marks while the belt and cam gears are still on the motor and while it's at TDC. I'm not familiar with the VVT cam gears so I'm not exactly sure about the marks.

+TheCarPassionChannel Thanks bud, turns out the only mark on the VVT Intake Cam Gear (that I could find)is one little notch on a tooth that points to the 'E' on the backplate at TDC. So I locked it there before I pulled it off...will find out if I did everything correctly when I put it all back together!

Awesome, i did all of this a few months back and this video is the first one to tackle everything you should do when already bothering with replacing the belt, seals, wp etc. It is also interesting to see some different ways of tackling some problems one might run into, such as perfecting the timing, especially when working alone. A few things i would have liked to have seen though was you putting some loctite on those rotating bolts! Furthermore all needed torque specs would have just rounded off the video completely. Also, my crank and cam gear bolts really did not come off as easily as depicted in your video, i either had to use a 3ft lever + a friend stomping the brakes or the "bump starter motor method" when i was alone. One last thing.. i found it the easiest to drill through the middle of the crank/cam seals (metal Ring) with a 2-3mm drill bit, since mine were sat so tight, trying to pull them off using a seal puller just would have ended up scratching up my crank. Sorry for accumulating so many things here, i still highly appreciate this and all of your other tutorials, and all the work it takes not only to do these things but to record an cut those videos together!

Excellent video presentation! Thank you for the clear, concise tutorial helping me to maintain my antique Miata. The only thing I'd like to point out is that the crank key you are shown holding is a square key. A woodruff key is always semi-circular. There are four categories of keys, (1) Sunk keys (2) Saddle keys (3) Tangent keys (4) Serrated shaft and Splines. The square and woodruff keys are both sunk keys. Although they do basically the same thing, only half moon shaped keys are woodruff keys. A technical nit indeed but something I thought you might like to add to your wealth of knowledge.

This is the best Miata video out there. I'm getting ready to replace the valve cover gasket and thought I'd check in with this channel to make certain I had all the information I could get. Now, if I get that valve cover off and see the timing belt needs to be replaced, I'll only tinkle a little bit. I don't know how many people realize you're not just doing the work, but you're working the camera, you've researched enough to give good advice, and edited the whole thing. Great work!

Think you so much for this video, because there are so many videos about miata timing belt change but they are going to fast and taking short cuts for time but your video is perfect you show each step, you show what to take off and in what step next, and for someone like myself who never change out a timing belt, it really help me and I loved it. I have a limited edition mx5 mk1 and will be following this video to replace all that you have suggested . I am currently on lock down in the UK because of cv 19 and restoring the mx5 is helping through this tough time . Absolutely fantastic in depth and easy to follow instructions and very well put together . Keep up the great work . i know this is irrelevant but im a huge miata fan, but recently i moved to korea and wont be back in the states for a while.. the car scene in korea is very dull unless you know people and go to the right part of the country but it's a lot more expensive to maintain the car enthusiast lifestyle and not knowing anybody in korea, i decided to make video blogs to see where it goes in order to eventually help finance my passion. im at a low point in my life with nobody to talk to for thousands of miles and i really need to cheer up and your videos give me motivation to achieve my dreams... so thank you.

And I have found your vids to be Excellent, in All the right ways (I also worked in Audio Post there in LA for 18 yrs)... Tight editing, GOOD SOUND (THANK YOU!), and some truly insightful asides... I'm a Big Fan, and will definitely keep watching for what's next! (I'm currently resurrecting an NA (96) I found in a field in N Texas, that sat for about 8 yrs (in high humidity, crazy storms, etc...). So far so good - new tank (MANDATORY - Thanks for the rear sub-frame vid! ;), and now the head gasket / timing set (which I suspect sidelined the poor thing in the first place... I'll do a coolant bypass at the same time (because I swore I'd never do another one without pulling the motor after the LAST one I installed ;), and am hoping that once again, I'll have a FABULOUS drop-top to parade my ridiculously over-fed self around in... (Ultimately... I'm hoping to retrieve my original '94 - now in Rosamond, and continue on with my dream of an Aluminum 5.3... Wish me Luck!). You doing that crank seal made it look way easier and less dangerous than the forums made it out to be. You just saved me a couple hundred bucks. I was just going to get a different engine, and let the current one rest as a coffee table. Guess the 1.6 is going to make it to 300K miles now.

That was a great tutorial; very meticulous and thorough. I will not wrench my own vehicle but it is great to understand all of the steps and tips. I rather pay a pro to do it and understand what he is doing and being able to discuss some of the details with knowledge. I used to wrench my own cars long ago in high school, and it is refreshing and nostalgic to see the relative simplicity of the miata engines after driving so many modern vehicles with so much junk on it that we dumbed down to only filling gas and checking oil and water. Thank you so much! I am enjoying all of your videos.

Hey man, quick question for you. I just picked up a bone stock 96 with 112k and noticed there's a very, very small oil leak coming from the front of the engine. Its past 100k and due for timing belt maintenance anyways so figured the leaks coming from either the cam seals or crank seal. Think that's where I should start?

Yeah man, just change the 2 cam seals and crank seal when your getting the timing belt done as they are pretty cheap and straight forward to do.

A tip if you have a Miata like my 97 where the alternator bolt is on the opposite side: It's only three bolts to remove the intake manifold brace behind it, and then you can get a breaker bar in there no problem. And thanks a ton for this video, it's perfect!
