Do you think plasterboard or pink fire rated board is allowed on the face of a brick chimney breast with log burner???
@00000Si
@00000Si 2 ай бұрын
Fire rated within 200mm of the opening from what I remember when we did ours, though we ended up leaving a 200mm gap and fitting a painted steel fire surround that covered it

I wonder how many homes have a log burner just fitted in place of a regular fire. I bet there are loads and I don't ever remember seeing news reports of it causing house fires. But, better save than sorry I guess.

Brilliant job Vikkie. Top tip - the dust from cement / plaster destroys power tools. It gets into the bearings and ruins them. So take a few minuets to blow out the vents with compressed air ( if poss ). Hopefully it will keep your tools in better condition. 😃😃

Advice after the fact ... to use the mounting washers, pre-drill your screw hole then use a large masonry bit to create a countersink for the countersunk part of the washer ( I use a 14mm masonry bit for this since I have one). The washer will now lie flat to the face of the board. No warping allowed!

Great job on the fire boarding. I honestly think It would look great with brick slips and would give you that seamless look you are looking for as you can get propper corners for the brick slips these days and slips in so many different colours. It would really transform the chimney breast. Id almost be tempted to do the wall the tv is going on aswell. Make a proper feature out of it all. Looking forward to seeing where you go with it.

Massive overkill to do the whole chimney breast with cement board and very expensive. Ordinary plaster board is easily sufficient on the outside and the inside its much quicker to use a quick setting lime plaster though the cement board is a good option too.

If the intent was to tile the chimney breast then there was really only two options, sand:cement render or a cementitious tile backer board, which has been decided upon. The reason for this is that the tiles need to be fixed to a substrate that does not move differentially with the tiles, which plaster/plasterboard will do. The whole issue is exacerbated by the fact that the chimney breast will see greater fluctuations in heat so that the tiles and their backer need to be stable. Fire cement was the right product because it is dimensionally stable unlike mastic. Similarly mechanical fixing was the right spec as relying on adhesive in a relatively widely fluctuating temperature background is risky, the adhesive is best used as a leveller. Why not tile directly onto the chimney breast with a thick bed adhesive?
