I specifically look for duvet covers for their immense yardage. At a thrift store here I have paid only a few $$ for about 4 yards of fabric. They are great for background fabric but can be a little heavier weight fabric than a sheet. Tangled is on my list...thank you! Congratulations on your liberation from perfection! It is so freeing to finally accept that something is "good enough".

I love the idea of all of the fabric that could be harvested from a duvet but find the idea of managing that much fabric daunting! How do you successfully carve up a duvet so that the grain of the fabric is straight? Any suggestions would be appreciated as fabric here in Canada is so expensive. Thanks!
@Sylvie_M
@Sylvie_M 2 ай бұрын
@@karenneiman856 Firstly, I also am in Canada...that is why I stumbled onto duvets. lol. I normally buy twin duvets which are usually about 1m wide or slightly less (36"). I cut off the seams which are generally on the sides. If you wanted more manageable pieces than a 4m length you could simply just cut across the end with no opening to make 2m long pieces. In my experience, the straight of the grain is the same as you would determine on any piece of fabric. I think Cathy did a video (or included it in a video) on finding the straight of the grain not so long ago. Hope this helps.
@Sylvie_M

With using the stripes in the fabrics if they are printed they could be printed off grain (if the stripes are woven in they will be straight if a tight weave) so just becareful to look closely at the weave before you cut it. You don't want your strips to be bias cut or your block will press wonky and likely have ripples along the seams. I love how you explain your decisions within your choices of fabric and patterns.

Many years ago, I read a quilt book , Quilting with Plaids and Stripes. I can’t remember the name of the author, however she specialized in woven plaids, stripes checks and homespun type fabrics. She advocated blocks that she called “casually off grain”. She thought they had more movement and were more interesting than if the quilter drove herself/himself mad trying to get perfect matches

Hi Cathy, for your yellow block with the "skinnier" strip, if you had taken the bock apart and resewn it with a very skimpy 1/4 in seam you might have been able to get it to match your other blocks. And the overall quilting would have been enough to secure even the block with the narrower seam, I think. Food for thought anyway. I love your videos, your colour choices and your reasonning of all things design. Thanks,

C, I did seriously consider taking the block apart and resewing it with a "very skimpy" 1/4 in seam (and I also considered taking it apart and just cutting new pieces) but in the end decided to short the seams between blocks instead of within the block. As always, your video was very enjoyable. Your quilt is beautiful! Not that the mismatching plaids matter. But it got me wondering if you could get the plaids to match and how much of a pain would it be. So guess who will be going to the thrift store tomorrow to get some plaid shirts. I have other things to do but must drop everything to figure this out now. 😊 I love puzzles and this is an intriguing one. I think I might at least know how to do it with a 10-inch square of plaid fabric. We’ll see. Not as sure about the jelly roll.

If matching the plaids should ever matter, you could make plastic templates and mark the lines you favor on the template to align them when you piece. I do like the mismatch of the green and yellow, but I feel certain it would look nice matched. Many vintage and antique quilts have scraps sewn together, and the fabrics don't align with the pattern. The whole point using shirts is to save $$$, and to reuse or give these wonderful textiles a second life. ❤ 😊 🎉

First of all Yay I’m pretty sure I suggested this pattern to you back when you made a video about good quilt patterns for shirts!! I had made one block and said this thing is amazing for shirt fabric! Also it has turned into one of my whips, but I had planned it all out to make it look interwoven. You just have to map out your colors before hand and make the large square from the four blocks connecting to each other have the same color…I don’t know if that makes sense but it’s totally doable and this makes me want to pull it out of my whips and get going on it again!

I have dyed some linen with varying degrees of success...it tends to have a lovely color, but is blotchy and not uniform in color at all (think moda grunge!) From what I've read and heard from other quilters, that is to be expected with RIT dye.🤷🏻‍♀️ A few people have recommended Dharma Trading Co. dyes for achieving a uniform and thoroughly-dyed linen. And you didn't ask for this advice, but you might consider saving that king sheet to use as a backing for a linen quilt....it would make an easy and soft backing that required no piecing! 🤩

I don't think that's crazy AT ALL, and I think it could be an amazing quilt! 😍 🤩Be sure and consider the weight of your linens (especially as you add batting and backing so it doesn't get too heavy!)

I have been toying with the idea of using a linen tablecloth as a backing and maybe even dyeing it first. Has anyone had experience with that? How did it turn out? Thanks!

OMG! “If the person noticed who would they care, and if they cares why are we giving them a quilt?” LOL! Never had anyone turn down a quilt! We are our own worst quilt police!

Ok… I bought the pattern. And while I was there, I got the Hashtag pattern, too! They are both so intricate looking but appear simple to make. Sign me up! Thanks for the guidance over to Cluck!🐓🐓🪡

You're welcome! I hope you enjoy making it as much as I did! ❤️ I like that Hashtag pattern too---you'll have to report back when you make it!

I love your quilt on the design wall. I have a memory quilt commission and trying to find a quilt that would work. What is the pattern of the quilt behind you?

I enjoy your explanations in your videos. However, I am not a fan of scrappy and non matching plaids. I have made several memory quilts and if there are a lot of plaids I definitely would not use this pattern. I love the pattern but would avoid using plaids.
