I've suffered with anxiety for the better part of 15 years, and becoming a cat momma for the first time this year I was surprised to learn that my babies' purrs have calmed my mind more than anything else by a mile

Yes! I deal with depression and anxiety, and what is great about my cat is she can tell when I'm feeling down she will jump in my lap and purr LOUD. She normally makes a soft purr sound, but when I'm feeling bad she knows it somehow and hangs out with me and turns up the volume.❤😺

oh my god... i can´t express how much my cats help me with my mental health. I used to have morning anxieties, but since I have Nim bad mornings are pretty much gone. She almost always comes up to me, when I wake up or she sleeps in my arms all night. She is probably my real live spirit animal. Then I got Loki, which is probably spirit animal to Nim :D

I sat in a pub once, a long time ago with my boyfriend. A large ginger tomcat came over to me, said hello to me and then insisted on draping himself around my neck, purring away like a motorbike. This was the first time I'd met this cat, or had much to do with a cat at all. He was purring so loudly I couldn't hear much else. I carefully took him off, fussed him a bit and set him down. Then he climbed into the table and around my neck again. The landlord of the pub came over smiling and said this was strange, since he only usually does that with pregnant women. We laughed since it would be too early to tell either way. A week later, one thing and another, I did a test. Guess what? That was me pregnant. The cat knew before anyone else!

A fur baby I had for 20 years knew when I was getting sick before I did. He'd get very clingy, and wouldn't leave me alone. I learned to trust his instincts and call my doctor when he'd act like that, after he knew I was having a heart attack. When I got home from the hospital, you'd think if he was going to lay near the "hurt" area, he'd lay by my angioplasty wound in my groin, right? Nope. He laid near my heart. I wish he'd taught my other kitty how to do that before he died.

My anecdote about "healing purrs"...When I had a kidney infection my cat knew, she would NOT leave my side, not even to eat. I would get up 1000 times to go to the bathroom, and she went with me every single time. My partner and I had to wait all night until shops opened to get meds, and so as I laid in pain on the couch, she laid right beside me (something she never does) and purred and purred. It was like she knew not to sit on my belly, which is what she would normally do, and she stayed with me purring until my partner was able to get meds and come back with them! When he came back she ran to the door and very urgently meowing...like she was saying "help her! help my girl!" and once he got me medicated and feeling better, only then did she eat. Cats can be so fiercely loyal and loving.

Wow me too. I had a bowel blockage surgery in Dec. I was in the hospital 2 weeks & I had neighbors check on her & my husband flew home so he was there to sleep & for a couple hours in between his morning & evening visit but no me. When I got home a few days past the 2 week mark. I was cut up half my whole belly from as low as he could start to past my belly button I had staples the first week home. Tasha ALWAYS walked on me in bed & she is a large frame & 5 pounds over weight. She is 27 pounds!!!! I could not life more than 5 pounds. She got in bed next to me & laid against my side and same thing I wouldn’t pet her yet she kept purring I thought man she missed me. She was glued to me yet didn’t walk on me at all she still has not. I’m not at 100 yet. She is next to me on the couch also she never does that. She sleeps on top of top couch cushion behind my head normally. But now she is at my side & yes purrs more then ever. She follows me everywhere & must be near me. It’s so sweet & makes me feel so loved & so very missed while I was gone. I love her so very much. I am 57 & since I was about 8 years old I have always had a cat or cats normally I had one but my daughter as a young girl wanted her own kitty bcz my calico at the time hated kids bcz the family I rescued her from the mom told me her daughters would chase her all over the house & tease her something terrible. So muffin hated & distrusted children sadly. But my daughter s kitten did adore & love Kelly so very much it was sweet & even as she got older & those cats had passed a month apart oddly. But then she picked out a kitty I got her & I got a rescue as well & they both passed last year oddly a month apart they were a year apart as far as age. Kelly’s car passed so fast. She is married now but she has a new black cat also a rescue & I got Tasha as a kitten a Snow Shoe. My house in IL I have 3 cats there now bcz it’s sooo cold there I feel bad letting feral kittens stay out I found 2 kitten sisters in a barn so I took the Harley home & came back in my truck & brought them home naming one Harley. Then 2 years later a kitten so small a brown gray tabby was coming to drink from my koi pond. She heard the water fall so I started feeding her then end of ocr it was SO cold I took lunch meet to get her in she was only a kitten but feral she would watch us from 2 feet away & lick her lips & blinks eye us but we could not pet her. Then year 3 suddenly it changed in the Familyroom only & our bedroom if we were laying down we could pet her!! She lays in our laps now on the couch sleeps between us. Kids think we switched her out when they come over. Tasha travels back & forth from Chicago to AZ in Fall back to Chicago start of summer then we have 4 cats. Lol my husband must stay in Chicago for work 4 more years til he retires. My pain is SO much better in AZ. I had 4 brain surgeries & have a stimulator in my brain & a battery in my chest but still it helps but in Chicago the pain is too much. I am blessed that we could buy this small place I have to have one of the cats with me tho. I can’t live with out a cat they calm me take down anxiety & it’s not so lonely here with her here. I know this was long but my life long lived & appreciation of cats is a long love story with many many cats that had forever homes with me. Some kittens some came to me as seniors. I can’t say no. I always say A CAT IN NEED....... IS MY CAT INDEED!!! I have had 19 cats total in my life so far. Third grade til 57. Hopefully I will live to be 85 like my mother & I can look forward to many more needy cats in the next 18 years or so. God willing.

I just left my story in another thread about my now deceased kitty who knew when I was getting sick before I did. He did the same thing - very clingy, wouldn't leave me alone. He was so reliable with it I learned to trust his instincts and call the doctor when he'd act like that. He even "diagnosed" when I had a heart attack. Oddly, when I came home from the hospital, he didn't lay next to my groin, where the angioplasty wound was, he laid next to my heart, with his head right on my chest. He's the cat in my profile picture. This picture was actually a few days before he died of old age - 20. He would've just slept in that litter box if I hadn't noticed he couldn't get out by himself anymore. It was time to use a 13x9 pan with short sides as a litter box.

When my late husband was in the hospital with heart failure, he kept asking me to "bring my kitties here". I continually told him why I couldn't. Then our daughter went to the gift shop there and got a small stuffed tabby kitty for him. He would hold that kitty for hours, and seemed to lessen his requests that I bring our cats in. He lasted another 17 days, still holding his stuffed kitty, and asking for his kitties. I often wonder whether it would have made any difference if I had been able to bring them in.

My "daughter's" cat greeted me with a somewhat suspicious look when I came home from the hospital after a craniotomy. Then he finally jumped up on my bed and gave me the biggest head bump greeting ever, right on the fresh cut that of course was stitched up and sore. So I yelped and he jumped back and then approached again very slowly and started sniffing every stitch very thoroughly. I could hear and feel his breath as he carefully examined the cut. Then he laid down by my hips and curled up to stay. Sometimes purring. Sometimes not but just in the perfect spot to reach back and touch him which would start him purring. So comforting.

I had (life saving) surgery in 2019. My dad and sister tagged driving up and down the country to be with me / look after my cats. Both said my cats were acting weird which surprised me as neither knew my cats. I didn't know what to make of that. From the time I got home from hospital to now (2022), the cats don't leave my side. I'm fine now (unless they know something I don't) but it's still weird how they are just by me wherever I am. Bitter sweet.

Re: Adult cats meowing only for humans, many years ago we had a cat we allowed to go outdoors, as he stayed in the yard and didn't try to mix it up with other cats. Anyway, he somehow figured out that, when he was sitting outside the sliding door meowing to be let in, we couldn't hear him from the other side of the glass. So, he decided to save his kitty vocal cords -- he would literally MIME a "meow," moving his mouth like he was vocalizing but with zero sound coming out. And it worked; we always knew what he wanted. It was funny and amazing at the same time. RIP, Kersey!

I have 4 and my youngest is a little over a year old and he had never purred. He's got a lot of anxiety and he's realt overstimulated by touch and he's been some work, but I don't mind. I have severe anxiety and even after therapy and years of medication, I still have be m really bad days, so I understand his need for calm, patience, quiet, and routine. Living with my hyper hubby is not always easy, so little Angus and I have really bonded. He will show me to hold him briefly, gives him his and kisses, he'll even come to me for kisses, he loves Ryu be pet and scratched and he's always showing me his belly, so I know he's happy. My hubby was off for 2 weeks at Christmas and Angus, unlike the other 3 cats, wouldn't come around as much. He obviously missed all that love and white my hubby was gone he actuality for in my lap for hugs and kisses and pets and that baby actually purred! Made my entire year. He's not done it again, but I'll take that one time. My kitty actually really loves me and the attention I give him. The others are just ingrates who take me for granted..JK. o know the others love me too, they're always asking for my time, I work from home, I'm always around. But boy howdy, when I do have to go out, they pout, and when I get back they're so excited.

My cat 'chats' to me all the time. If I've been out, she'll chat away, rapidly, for quite a while, as if she updating me on all the things that have happened since I left. Even when I'm in, she spends various times of the day, following me around, chirping and meowing away, telling me what she thinks, and probably what she'd rather I was doing. She's a right little chatter-box.

I adopted a stray cat in my neighborhood years ago. She was a tortoiseshell calico. I called her Patches because she had white, tan, and dark patches on her face. She was pregnant at the time. She never purred, and when I would pet her, she would growl. When I’d stop (because she was growling) she would butt me with her head until I’d start scratching or petting her. After a few weeks, I figured she might not know how, especially if she lost her mother too early. So every time I’d see her, I would stop and pet or hold her and make purring sounds. That went on for a little over two years, before she purred back! And after that, she never growled at me again! She still growled at Sam, my dog, and some other cats that she tolerated, but she never growled at me again, ever. She was an absolute love bug!

I saw this thing somewhere and it was talking about how a girl was having a bad day so she went to her bestfriend for support. Her bestfriend told her what a loser she was, that her bf was probably cheating, things would never get better, and she had nothing good to offer anyone. Then you realize she's not talking to her "bestfriend" she's talking to herself in the mirror. The video went on to say, you wouldn't talk to your bestfriend that way so why would you talk to yourself that way. When you think something negative about yourself you have to ask yourself "is this something I would say to my friend" and if not then dismiss it for the b.s it really is. Music helps. Hope you feel better.

I HEAR YA! I have a supervisor who is cold to me and sometimes ignores me but then says good morning to many others. I have never done anything to her. I say good morning, am polite, always have included her. I was feeling so anxious and self analytical and down on myself for somehow offending her (I must have, right? For her to be so irritable and nasty)...until a couple other days later when other coworkers told me they had experienced the same thing. She is snarkiest with the kind people who are polite. Now I am much more quiet around her. Civil. But not as warm. And I realized...you can be a good person and some people just won't treat you well. Not sure if this relates to why you have been hard on yourself or dealing with negative self talk...but I hope you feel better soon! I had a female surgery shortly after that, and she put her head on my tummy and purred. Once again, I didn't need any pain killers. And recently, I had some ear surgery and had to lay on my right side. Wookie came up and put her purring little head against the bad ear. She is truly a magic cat!

This is a phenomenom that I've encountered by way of my cat, that I've never heard of EVER happening: When I sneeze, she'll chatter at me like she would a bird outside the window. What shocked me is I saw a recent cat video where the cat did the exact same thing! Mine started doing it when I had a particularly long sneezing fit, almost like she was asking "Are you okay?!" Now she does it if I only sneeze once, lol!

My black rescue, Catterina started to curl right up next to my shoulder and purr while I did this. After less than a week the pain was gone. I had this shoulder issue for about 5 years and then rescued my gorgeous black kitty and I am convinced she healed me. I had tried stretching on the floor many times before and it only brought temporary relief. Cats are amazing and if you ask me their purrs are magical. 💖💖💖🐈‍⬛

Loved your show MY CAT FROM HELL and was disappointed when it was no longer on. Thankfully I found you on line. You have the best sense of humor. Your video about giving a cat a pill helped me immensely. I had to give my cat sedation prior to trip to hospital for Radioactive Iodine treatment. You said not to be uptight and anxious about it but more deliberate and matter of fact. It also helped to wrap her in a towel, use a pill popper and to do it fairly quickly. Your comments made me more confident. Thank You!

I calmly drop a towel over them but then quickly and gently wrap them up, pet them, roll them over, mouth upward, expose the head, gentle open their mouth from the side and drop it in, near the back, close the mouth and hold it shut then rub downward from their chin and along their neck a few times to trigger their swallowing reflex. It is quick and no struggling. The worst thing you can do is try and get medicine in them while they are standing up. Flipping them over makes it so much quicker and easier. No forcing of the head like I see being done by some shelter staff. Pill pockets just make a tiny pill bigger, dumb idea. It also work for treating eyes too. STOP grabbing their head. One thing I’ve observed about cats, at least the many Siamese I e had, is they have incredible memories and are great mimics. As far as mimics go, I particularly remember one cat we had who watched us playing monopoly. After about thirty minutes he grabbed the dice in his paws, tossed it up in the air snd batted the metal pieces around, not the hotels. He did stuff like that all the time. Many of our cats learned not only the meaning of certain common and favorite words snd would try to imitate the word to let us know what they wanted. Like a clipped MOUT to mean Go Outside. My kitty now has a huge and consistent vocabulary all her own that sounds nothing like an English word but often has the same amount of syllables. Like: MEAH REAH for breakfast/dinner. She won’t eat unless I ask her if she wants breakfast or dinner and replies MEAH REAH. or if she wants it earlier than our usual time she will initiate the MEAH REAH drill to let me know she’s ready to eat. She can’t say butterfly 🦋 (her fav toy) but she yowls when she wants to play with it. But it’s a Yow Rau Rau. When she wants a treat she brings me the small dish I put her treat on then stares at me. And all I have to say is Treat? And she is MEAH!!!!!!!! Which I think in her mind is: heck yeah! But again, same amount of syllables as treat. Also if something is puzzling to her she drops her tone at the end like we English speakers do when phrasing a question. It’s mimicry. It’s amazing.

My sphynx who passed away from cancer on monday 3rd was vocal and highly sapient in the same way. I've never encountered a cat as observably intelligent, deliberate and empathic cat as him. Everything from using different sounds for different needs/desires, asking permission before jumping up to snuggle and climb my shoulders to calculating trigger events to evade bath time based on overheard planning conversations. Reacting to beeing told off by pouting and settling for allowed activity nearby. Stacking my spouses chest with cat toys when they had a c-ptsd triggered anxiety attack. Consistently waking me up in time for getting to work when I had forgotten to set the alarm and even trying to wake me during a sleep apnea by yowling and pressing hard and repeatedly on my nose that woke my spouse who mananged to shove me onto my side and drop me back hard enough to get me breathing again, all without waking me...

These are a few things I've learned about my cats.. Cats hearing is fine tuned they know all the sounds of a crinkle of a treat bag, or when you opening a can of cat food are preparing their meal. Cats watch us and know our habits & routines when we are getting ready for work when we collect our keys etc. When the shoes go on they know we are leaving, they know the sounds of our car starting up or pulling in driveway wait and listen for footsteps, keys unlocking door, door nob turning. They know when we are getting ready for bed and will get ready or go with us or to their spot. After a while they learn words like when napping on my lap I say I got to get up or I got to go and my cat gets up and moves, in the begining id give kitty a slight nudge and tell her I got to go then after some time she learned what the words meant and moved. Also I've noticed my cats talk with their tail like when they are napping if I say their name they will twitch their tail showing me they are listening and not in a deep sleep. Oh cats are creatures of habit they love routines especially related to feeding time so if you want a tighter bond with your cat try to at least maintain a feeding routine😽

I, unfortunately, knew all of these due to many years of watching Jackson (either through this channel or his show). The one I find interesting is the vocalizations. Very much like most Siamese based breeds, Siam does trilling/chirping meows depending on who/what he is making them towards. If he's at the window, he either does short trills/chirps or he'll do slightly longer ones that end with the last half of a meow. He'll do normal meows if he is wanting attention from my wife or myself or if he's just looking around. He will, also, talk to his water bowl before he drinks from it. It's almost a ritual. First, he will moan at it (almost like he's saying "no") two or three times while pawing at the surface in front of the water bowl. Then, he will drink from it. Nefertiti, on the other hand, is a relatively quiet cat. She let's out a crying meow if she wants food or our attention. Sometimes its short and sometimes you think she's going for the gold in how long a cat can meow. But, always quietly. That's it (unless you count her letting Siam that she's annoyed with him). Dang, I almost forgot! Siam, also, makes this noise when we tell him to get down from the counter that makes him sound like a squeak toy. Which would be problematic if we had a good sized dog.............

They held everything back that was solid black until Nov. 1. He said this was due to people adopting them for satanic ritual purposes. On Nov. 1 you would most likely only have black as the color option to pick if you were going to adopt a kitten or cat. I would have never thought there were these types of sick people out there that would simply adopt a cat only to harm it for their own sick purposes. Sad for sure.

Re Cat Fact #1: Jackson, I've heard a scientist say that for that 'Righting mechanism' to work, it needs to happen within a certain 'threshold' if you will. The height a cat falls from has to be sufficient to accomplish that body rotation & horizon recognition... So, if acat falls suddenly, say, from a one story window or roof, it may not be able to fully right itself & thus sustain injury. Falling from a 2d story may yield a different result. And as you told your viewers, DON'T Try This @Home!!! Thanks for great content!

I'm not sure, but I thought the limit was probably a lot less than that, my cat has been known to right herself from 5 or 6 ft. Definitely not something to test at home lol. Good comment. My neighbours daughter flung her cat from three stories up saying it would fall properly. The kitty was never the same after that (thus ended up with my neighbours). Realising this contradicts what you just wrote ... but point is, regardless of height, it doesn't always work out well. I did a terrible thing a few years back when just as my cat leapt from my balcony to the next door balcony, I replaced a metal lantern on the tiled floor right by where she took off from. The sound spooked her and she got distracted and fell to the ground. I broke the land speed record running downstairs and outside to find her (knowing there was a metal post/fence beneath where she fell). She was fine (TFG). I learnt a good lesson that day.

@@pmbluemoon this is so true. I discovered this with my last cats, and I've continued the "experiments" with my current cat. He will do just about anything I ask him to do, if he understands what I mean. So for example "come out, please" means: walk through this doorway. "stop" and "get down" = obvious I think. he responds to his name, too, and "come here" works more often than not. "Be careful" or "sweet feet!" when he gets a little too excited during play time is also something he understands! I think the key is that you have to approach it as a request, not a demand, and this way I've found that cats are more than happy to oblige, most of the time ;)

An example of a cat falling from heights: At our apartment building there are many families with cats. Our sixth-floor neighbor's cat Mia fell from the balcony. We are living on floor one. I was on the balcony at that time and I heard a 'shlaps' kind of sound then, something run very fast to under a car. I thought it was one of our fur babies jumping from the balcony. So, I got out and looked under the cars just parked outside the building and found Mia, a sixth-floor resident, very scared. I called her family and she was taken to the vet. Apparently, she was looking from the balcony to some birds and tangled to clothing lines and fell. No serious injuries, just some broken nails on her front paws and little blood. She is some lucky girl I say.

Frankie, my furbaby, is right pawed and prefers to give high fives with her right paw which is adorable. She also has special vocalizations she uses just for me. One is for calling out and trying to find where I am, another is she's hungry, and her favorite is asking me to follow her (she likes to show off her toys or where she'd like to cuddle.) Frankie will also pet me with her right paw just like I pet her which cracks me up.

I'd be incredibly interested to hear your thoughts on cats doing the "Hunger for Words" experiments where their person is teaching them to speak using buttons (such as FluentPet buttons). A couple of examples off of the top of my head is the channel BilliSpeaks and the channel catmanjohn.

I was surprised a few months ago when I found out about cats being included in this! It absolutely amazed me. I watch both of those channels and the way it seems to me is that both Billi and Russell seem very pleased with being able to effectively communicate with their humans. It seems to have taken away the frustration of trying to constantly get their point across. If the cat isn't interested, like Russell's siblings are not, then they can just walk away and not participate.

There's a dog called Bunny who uses them extensively and is amazing with the complex thoughts she has! Her mom asked about the sleep twitching when she woke and Bunny replied, "Dream is night talk." Once she spontaneously came out with, "Stranger ouch paw." Walked over to mom and presented the paw with a thorn in it! And when they recently got a second dog, Otter, it wasn't long before he--without lessons, only observing--used the buttons to say, "Talk Otter now!" Mom was shocked :-)

@@patmaurer8541 I love Bunny! As well as the dog that started it all, Stella from hungerforwords! I just didn't mention them because I was only bringing up the talking cats, haha. Stella was the first dog I saw use different words to describe another word (her "ocean" button was broken so she pressed the words "big" "water" "outside") and I was FLOORED! I remember when a macaw was the first non-human to do that (she didn't know what cake was called so she called it "sweet bread") and it caused an explosion in the science world, and now we're finding out dogs are that smart too?! The contributions these buttons have on science and animal psychology is absolutely phenomenal!

I adopted two kittens myself last week, my old cat of fifteen years has early stage kidney disease and I love her dearly so I know it’ll break my heart when she passes so I thought adopting a kitten or young cat would both give me someone else to love and a companion for her. So I went through the process at my local shelter with the intent of getting just one. A brown and black tabby kitten that’s about nine weeks old. But then on adoption day when I went to pick her up, the staff just happened to take me by another cage and mention the occupant inside. A tiny black kitten of about five or six weeks old that had been found abandoned in a gutter and brought to the shelter. When I stopped to get a good look at her, she lifted her head to look at me and promptly stole a piece of my heart. I came home that day with two kittens who are now inseparable.

Hi Jackson. Unfortunately, not all cats can survive a fall, even a short fall! My mother raised Manx cats many years ago. One of them was an All American Grand Champion, and many of his descendents were champions as well. They were tailless and short backed, and one of them, a gorgeous female kitten who would have been a champion, broke her back in seven foot fall. She died a few days later. It was horrible, I was 15 at the time. Much later in life, a normally long backed and tailed pet cat broke his hip bone falling from a low roof. He had to have major surgery, and took months to recover. So, I keep my cats inside and NEVER let them climb onto high places
@SonsOfLorgar
@SonsOfLorgar 2 жыл бұрын
That's horrible! Sphynxes are also a cat that can't turn over in a fall since their lack of fur reduces the air resistance to the point that their tails are as useless for flight control as trying to turn a boat using a straight, round pole that can't even reach the bottom..

I adopted a 4 yr old cat that had lived her entire life on the streets after being thrown out by her original owner, the woman’s dog also attacked her so she just left her to fend for herself. Now we have had her a year and I have to stand with her when she eats and stroke her otherwise she won’t eat, she is forever looking around. She hides when my young stepson comes around so I feed her in another part of our home as she is more settled then, she sleeps next to me every night and snuggles up and has only just started going towards my husband for snuggles. Now she has never meowed, she only occasionally “yaps” but has never “spoken” and is that because of how she grew up, I am assuming it was without her mom or proper care and will this ever resolve?. She is a beautiful kitty with a great personality who I absolutely adore and I only want the best for her, I am also pondering whether to get a kitten as she responds incredibly strongly to sounds of a kitten in distress and I feel it will really help her, plus then she will have a playmate. Will this help as although she has tons of toys I want her to become much more confident and happy in herself. Is this a good idea to approach perhaps so she can be a “mom” and have her own to look after? X

When I was a teenager I had a bout with insomnia. I'd gone 3 days with no sleep. By the 4th day I was so tired I didn't know which way was up. All my younger were at friends' houses, so my mother suggested I lay down on the couch to try to sleep. I lay there for awhile, still not sleeping when suddenly Eva, a cat I fed and who was not supposed to be inside jumped up on the couch with me. She quietly climbed up on my chest and lay there looking me in the eyes. Then she started to purr and I realized it was not the regular purr she would do while being petted. I couldn't move and I couldn't look away. Then I felt myself just start to drift down down; like a feather wafting down towards the ground. And then there was nothing for about 3.5 hours when my younger started coming back home. To this day I believe that Eva hypnotized me so I could sleep. That ended that bout of insomnia. So, I truly believe that cats purring can help us heal.
