I think the cat vs dog debate comes down to one thing ,the personality of the human in the equation . I'm a cat person and totally unapologetic about it ,I have nothing against dogs I just don't want to live with one .I totally understand the appeal of dogs ,they offer a level of interaction ,attention ,obedience etc that most cats don't .There is something about cat energy and their way of being that is incredibly relaxing though ,for me there is nothing more comfortable than hours spent just "hanging" with my cat .

You pretty much sum up my feelings as well. We had dogs and cats in our house as kids growing up, but I think it really depends on your personality in which you choose.

I 100% agree with you. It all depends on what you want in a pet. Some people prefer the independence of cats, which I'm one of them and others prefer the dependence of dogs. It's all about your personality and what you want in a pet. I love to be able to leave my house for 8-10 hours a day and not worry about a dog needing to go outside. It's nice to know that you can have a bowl of water down & a litter box and the cat will be fine.

@J LA I agree. I've had cats most of my life and they never need the attention that dogs need. Dogs will tear your house apart if they are left too long by themselves. I have seen it, while cats, even though they can be naughty also, don't NEED that round the clock attention that a dog craves. And yes, dogs are a lot more work than cats are.

I was always a dog person until I met a wonderful lady who had a lot of cats! Never fewer than five, and usually many more! The time we spent together I got to know her cats and kittens and had such fun with them that I've "turned"! I live in a rural town now and a few months ago I was adopted by a feral cat. It took quite a while to get her used to being around me, but now we're just the best of buds! She's so cool I don't know how I even deserve her, but I thank the Lord that I have her companionship now!

@Gail Everett Oh, yeah, I didn't track it well at all, but I'd say it took about the same amount of time as it's taking you! At first I'd feed her outside, but she wouldn't come around until I wasn't around, but SLOWLY I worked my way outside to sit and watch, but I couldn't look at her! It took a lot of patience, sweet talking and treats to finally get her to come inside the house, and then only to eat, and I had to keep the door open for a fast escape! I guess it's been 8 or 9 months now but she's comfortable coming in and going out through the hole in the screen door I cut out and we're doing just fine! Patience is the key! Go slowly, and good luck!!

@Gail Everett How old is your cat? If it's older than a small kitten, it's going to take a while. Cats are individuals, so one cat may take 6 months and another may take 2 years. If you want to speed up the process or at least do it right, there are tons of videos here on KZbin about habituating ferals to humans. It's a long tedious process sometimes, but it's SO rewarding. :)

@Gail Everett woah... Honestly and sincerely, Good for you both that you took Brady in. I cant imagine leaving my cat in a "closet" for 7 years... even with company of his parents. ...Even if it was a full bed room! Poor lil guy. 😢 Considering his upbringing, or I guess lack there of, 4 months is really good progress. Old habits are tough to break out of, especially because cats are beings that absolutely cling onto structure/schedules, so all of that must be a really big change for him. You going out of your way to figure out whats going to help him is half the battle though. The other half is patience and lots of rewards 😅🤣 From my own experience(i have 3, 1 from a shelter & 2 from outside...last one just decided he was coming home with me lolol!) & what Ive read about cats, any time they are really shy or standoff-ish or even mean, theyre usually scared. And considering what youve shared about him, it makes sense that hes nervous. All of this is super new to him. Some cats like being up high so they can see EVERYTHING going on. Id try putting up some shelves that go along the perimeters of some of the rooms in your home with some sort of grip ontop of them;I use those mesh foam cabinet dish mats since theyre cheap & easy to clean or replace. He may start coming out more often since nothing can surprise him from up there. :) You can also try reading to him softly if hes still not used to your voice. Sprinkle in some treats through out story time too of course 😋 Youre doing great though!! Im sure he'll be cuddled up in your lap in no time 😁

I have always been a dog person and grew up with dogs and having a dog. Then I took in a foster cat (that got a forever home here since I participated in saving her life ). I love this video and view it as a “parenting class”. All I know today is because of Jackson. I follow every advice and I have the best relationship with my cat. No issues what so ever. I really had to “accept” that you cannot expect the same things from a cat that you can from a dog.

I had dogs growing up and have a cat now, and I must say I love both equally. Neither is better, they are both great companions but in different ways. What I find important is in fact to appreciate both pets for what makes them unique, and do not expect a cat to act like a dog or viceversa (which I saw happening more often than one would expect).

Dogs are also individuals: my dog would not "play" fetch. I threw the tennis ball, he chased it, then raced back to me and left me in the dust. He wanted me to chase him & pry the ball out of his mouth. I felt like Charlie Brown when Lucy pulls the football away. I threw a stick once, he just looked embarrassed for me.

@@foxycinnamon7307 I totally understand. I had a lab/shepherd mix that as a puppy, she would play fetch forever. I'm not sure how old she was when she finally found out that there was no purpose to the game. I would throw the ball and she would run so fast to get and bring it right to my feet. I picked the ball up and threw it again. She stood there and watched the ball fly away and finally stop. She looked at me then looked at where the ball was. She looked at my again and just laid down. I really feel that she was saying..."ok. The thing got away from you once and I ran and brought it back to you. This time I know you let it get away from you. You want the thing back, go get it yourself." ROFL!!! She was tooooo smart!

@@virvin911 That is too funny and your pup was so clever to notice! My only dog (so far) was an adult pitbull I adopted. He also couldn't care less about fetch games. However, he was always trying to be helpful. I once heard my houseguest scolding my dog to stop grabbing the bedsheets. After I saw what was happening, the dog was clearly attempting to help her make the bed (opposite side, grab the top corner and pull toward the pillows). He wasn't used to seeing only one person make the bed by herself.

I have a cat and a small dog (chihuahua mix) that I got when they were 8-9 weeks and only a couple months apart. They were basically raised together and started taking on each other’s traits. Everyone says they’ve never met such an outgoing cat. He’s like dog levels of friendliness and desire for attention. My dog has learned to be more agile and moves like a cat to keep up with him when they play. He even sleeps like a cat.

My favorite dog was a doberman I got at 4 wks in 1980, raised by two cats with four kittens. He napped on the top kitchen cabinets. Only used a catbox once, no one approved; but he disliked going out back alone and no cat would play with him outside where he could build up full speed (65 lbs), so that fell to me. He could fight cat style or dog style. Was very curious and laid back. A doberman breeder once asked after being with him a few minutes "Was he raised with cats?" Oh yes.

Chihuahuas are dog’s running on cat software… They were bred to fill the cat role in Central America where there was no small cats - so they were bred as rat hunters and bed warmers (so much so that the Inca used chihuahua shaped hot water bottles). Our Siamese hangs out with the Chihuahuas and they groom each other.

I'm a parent to a 17 year old and I think it's actually easier than owning a dog. You're raising someone to become an adult, a dog is a dog. They're like 3 year olds following you around everywhere never giving you a moment of peace, always wanting food or attention. Jack Russell's are like this anyways. They're great if you like going outdoors a lot and want a dog to constantly be by your side. Well until some so-and-so on the other side of a field blows a whistle to their dog 2 feet away, so your dog decides to bolt it to the other side of the field faster than you can process what has happened.

I always considered myself to be a dog person. My American stafford has been with me for the past 12 years and I never considered getting a cat. Until my mum rang me saying she'd found a tiny little kitten that is. He was malnourished and a little dirty, but otherwise healthy. Immediately, I felt that I had to keep him. Six weeks later, he's really coming into his own. I never expected I could enjoy a cat's company so much. Cats do adore you, they just show it differently.

I grew up as a dog person. My Mom always said that cats were nice but they killed birds so she didn't want one. Of course that was back when cats were mostly outdoor pets and dogs were generally allowed to roam free. Years later, my boyfriend - future husband - and I got a cat from a college friend. Dave had been raised with dogs and cats, but always considered himself a cat person. I wanted a dog to add to the family, which at that point included a ferret, so adopted one at our county shelter, and everyone got along fine. Fast forward a few years, and we were a household with a dog and five cats! We eventually made a cross country move, with all of them coming with us, and then another cross country move back with the same group of fur kids. They were all pretty well bonded with each other. My husband is gone now, as are all of that group of six that moved with us, and I now have a 63 lb dog and four cats. One of the cats is the dog's girlfriend. From the time she came to our house, she has been attached to him. The other three could take him or leave him, but she waits at the window while I'm walking the dog, and greets him when we come back. She and another cat are the first to greet me when I come home. During all this time, we've had a handful of cats who likes to fetch various objects, either milk bottle rings, twist ties, or toy mice. We've had cats that were cuddlers, cats that would come up and say Hi and then stroll off, cats that would groom each other, cats that were not interested in associating with the rest of the group - basically the whole range of what a cat might or might not be like. The biggest thing I've learned from these many years of sharing my living space with cats is that there are only a few traits that are really typical of cats. Everything else seems to be up for grabs! But I have learned so much about cat behavior from you, Jackson, and I thank you for teaching me, and for being an advocate for felines everywhere! May you continue this important work for many years to come!

Growing up, my mom got us a Maine Coon that never really liked me, she tried to scratch me and only wanted to be petted by my mom (looking back, she just did not like kids, as i grew older she started to accept me and did not scratch anymore but touches were still a taboo). I always felt more like a dog person BUT due to the fact that i love animals in general, I wanted to give cats "a second try" and after our furball Semy left us 4 years ago and my dog Paxton moved in that i bought, roughly 16 months ago, i got our furstorm Pebbles from the local shelter. She was found with some of her siblings abandoned outside. My dog is a very friendly sweetheart who would never hurt anyone or anything but i still thought that it might be a bit of work to get them to like each other. I was soooo wrong. Day one she tried to scratch him, day 2 she already was ok with getting smelled by him and on day 3 both shared the sofa for a nap and afterwards played together. She absolutely loves to chase his wagging tail and my dog always tries to bring her big ropes he plays with. If another cat is outside the window that Pebbles hisses at, Pax joins to "defend her". In general before anyone of us gets a "hello from them" the first thing that happens if they see each other after waking up (they sleep in separate rooms due to my work) or after Pax was an a walk, Pebbles gets a big kiss and Paxton's legs get headbutted like crazy. Both of them are so sweet together and i am so happy that I tried again with a cat while having a dog. So, to everyone who is thinking about introducing one of them into a household with one of the pets already in it: I urge u to give it a try. Of course be careful and give both pets space to get to know the other one at the speed and rate the pets want to and try to find "compatible personalities" (for example my dog is as I said very sweet and playful but a little whimpy so i got a cat that seemed very confident with a "no one tells me what to do" attitude.) If it works out, you have one of the sweetest unusual friendships at home that someone could wish for. I love my two furbabies so much

I love this video! I was obsessed with dogs growing up. I still love my dogs very much, but when I bought my own home there were feral cats by my house. I trapped them. I got them spayed & neutered pronto. The female had to wait to be spayed, because she surprised me with four kittens. I spayed and neutered the kittens as well. I started seeing our shelter had a real cat crisis. More so than with dogs. When I fosterec dogs, my dogs would tolerate them but we're happy when they left. My cats on the other hand ... They weren't letting any cat or kitten I fostered, leave. Even when I took the new cat to the vet, my cats would hop on the kennel before I left the house with this look of, "You better sleep with one eye open tonight..." My cats are more pack oriented than my dogs. Or maybe they're just trying to start an army & take over. 😆💖🐾

Jackson, I'd love it if you'd do a video on cats and dogs living together, especially for cat owners considering adopting a dog too! Like, how to tell if your cat would be likely or rather not likely to get along with a dog. Is it possible to pair a more senior cat with a dog for the first time in the cats life? What to look out for in a dog who is supposed to live with cats. How to introduce them, what the pitfalls are etc. My parents' neighbor used to be a ranger with a rather large hunting dog. My parents' rather senior cat and the dog met one day and, well, when the dog tried to defend what he considered being his territory, he picked the shorter end for the cat having claws and knowing where they hurt (the dog's nose). They've been best friends ever since but she was the boss, of course :D

I think JG have that introduction video. The gist is to make sure your cat have a lot of vertical spaces so they can be somewhere when they dont want to be disturbed by the dog, and introduce them slowly by putting them in separate room, feed them both behind a barrier, and so on.

It will definitely come down to personalities of both cats and the prospective dog. I had 2 senior cats and two young cats when we got our puppy. One of the senior cats is just so chillaxed she didn't care what we brought into the house (she's now 18, was 15 at the time. Too old to care, lol) the other was displeased but kept distance. The young ones took a bit of time but got used to the puppy quickly. Then we got a kitten recently and he obviously didn't know what to do with a full grown golden retriever. He was sleeping with the dog a few weeks later. I suggest lots of space to allow the cats to escape. High up is good where they can watch the dog in true stalker fashion. A room the dog can't get into is also very helpful. We babygated the laundry room for kitty litter and cat food. It is also a safe escape. We've had a Bipetual home a few times, but our most memorable was when we had a GSD, Eva, and got a kitten we named Jade, and who would become Eva's adoptive daughter. Eva loved that silly kitten; they'd cuddle all the time, Eva would very gently play with her both as a kitten and young adult, she'd "groom" Jade (ie just get her all slobbery; Jade loved it), and jade would even groom her back (more neatly). Eva would let Jade climb her, make biscuits on her, rub all over her; they were just such a sweet unit. Eva, sadly, passed away when she was just six years old. Jade waited by the window for her to come home for weeks. Even our older cat, Max, was down for the longest time, and he was nowhere near close with Eva like Jade was.

I'm going to loose my big guy soon. He was 120, until he lost a good portion of weight after his cancer diagnosis, now 90 pounds. But my little tiny cat wasn't afraid of hum when I brought her home. The two were best buds as he could handle her rambunctious nature. She's been sleeping with him a lot more, getting all cuddly with him. It's so cute! And he loves her right back! I'm not ready to loose him yet. Or at all. Just like with all of my pets.

You forgot the most important: Dogs bark and it's difficult to train that out, cats don't bark. As someone with anxiety who startles at abrupt loud noises, I find that a very important distinction. Speaking of training, it's important that dog owners put time and effort into socializing and training their dogs, while cat owners can train their cats, it's not a necessity for a happy relationship. Anyhow, you can see I'm more team cat but to each their own!

As I was holding the cat my little self said if the cat goes I go so the cat came back home. I had snakes, rabbits, and hummingbirds because the mom didn't come back so we took them in. Then after getting a dog & getting her comfy n acceptance of her new friend her confidence improved. And she actually became almost more dog. Lol. I think coz she is now boss of the house as a cat often becomes as the dog gives her respect ( prob coz shes so quick, unpredictable with scratchy things on her feet lol) she now feels better. So its created a happier cat. Its lovely the way my dog respects her & get on. I was worried at first but it worked. She actually teases him to chase her on purpose so he gets told off & one day our dog ( collie) came out the kitchen trying to get my attention into kitchen. Hed snitched on her as he saw her on worktop stealing food. He knew it was wrong & got her into trouble. Sooo funny.

We initially thought that my cat hated the dog but when she had to go away for a few weeks the cat was constantly calling for the dog. He was always going to the places that the dog slept, stopped eating and got really clingy with me. When the dog came home the cat, for the first time, cuddled into the dog and actually scent marked her!

Our two boys (two large cats -- now 10yo) were raised with full-size chickens and learned to respect them. If they ever got too close the hens would peck 'em and send 'em running. But then we got some much smaller banty hens and all bets were off . . . plus the boys were full grown by then. We could still let the larger hens free range in our 2/3rd acre fenced back yard but that was never an option for the smaller hens. :) Now we've been traveling with them (fulltime and offgrid in our 5th wheel) for 7 years and folks with dogs say they can't imagine traveling with cats? Cats are e-a-s-y to travel with though a typical travel day for us is only 2 hours or 100 miles. :)

i think the cat v dog thing really boils down to our lifestyles. cats are more independent in the sense they can go in a litter box any time they need. it’s not like i have to think “i have to get home to take the dog(s) out.” i work long hours so that helps tremendously. i’m also somewhat busy with my lifestyle so i like that i am able to play with my kitty for a short time before every meal rather than stop my schedule and okay for hours with a dog.

cats and dogs are two very different creatures and they are both amazing in their ways that is why you can’t really compare them! I’ve grown with cats and dogs. Our family dog is now 14 years old and lives with my parents. I’m a parent of three wonderful cats and one lovely dog that recently turned 1! I cant even explain what they mean to me…they mean everything. although I Have to admit that I consider myself as a cat person. not saying I love my cats more than my pup or our family dog! but the personality of a cat is something beyond this world. the way cats love and trust is something different . You have to earn a dogs love and trust and dogs love you in a wonderful way! of course all dogs are different and all cats are different but to me, earning a cats trust is more challenging and somehow this makes a relationship stronger. Cats won’t raise their tails when they see you, they won’t “cry” or run around the house and jump all over you when they see you. but when I get home my cats will let me know they’re happy to see me. they will come to cuddle with me, they will sleep inside my arms, they will hug my arm gently, purr letting me know that they truly love and trust me. They will come to me anytime just to see me, to see what I’m up to, to play with me…they will get excited when I grab a toy, they will look outside of the window when I’m leaving...they know when I’m not feeling well, not all days are the same, all of them but especially one of my cats will not leave my side when I’m feeling down or when I’m sick and she will show me what I mean to her…I can’t imagine living one day without this love, It’s something I can’t explain. Of course my pup is amazing, he is the sweetest, very smart, caring and special!

Jackson, well, I was commenting and dumb phone threw me off and lost it! You gave great information, as usual! I was saying, I've always had numerous pets and could never say one was better than another. Many animals are every bit as sentient as we are, just in different ways. As for cats and dogs, part of our domestication of dogs was in choosing the ones who stayed less mature. And the original studies on alpha wolves, the first real researcher tried to correct his misinformation when he realized all he'd learned was moot by studying captive wolves. We now know much more after studying wild wolves.. The alpha pair care for the pack, very little domination needed. Just as we see in dogs, a confident dog is rarely aggressive, and fearful dogs are. I think if you're having to choose only one kind, a dog or a cat, it comes down to your lifestyle. And, I hope , if you can, you try to get two. Especially if you can't be home a lot. The one thing I will for sure commit to, is a neutered animal is ALWAYS happier, healthier and better all around. And for those who think it deprives them of sexual pleasure, nope! They can still have sex, if they want, just no babies and they won't tear a hole in your house to get to a 'mate' they can smell or hear miles away, lol. Please people, 'don't breed or buy while shelter pets die!' There is any number of 'purebred' dogs in shelters if you have a breed you're seeking, and there are 'rescue' groups on line for most breeds. Though I feel mixed tend to be healthier. 👍🌊💙💙💙🌊🥰✌

I my family we love all animals! I have been married for over 25 years, and over that time we have rescued dogs, cats, birds, turtles, raccoons, opossums, and a horse off the side of the road or highway. We start looking for thier home, by either calling numbers on tags or taking the animal to a vet to llon for chips and getting them back to their home, however if we can't find a home for them them we either find them a very loving home or take them in ourselves (obviously the cats and dogs in this case). For the wild animals, we help as much as we can to help the injured ones if we are permitted by the animal. My home feeds outside cats, raccoons, and opossums all the time and none of th fight or argue about the food, sometimes a few raccoons will eat food out of my hand. They all know too to come to my home if they are hurt or injured, as we see a lot of hurt animals all the time and we either nurse them back to health or just give them a secure safe environment to recover. Anyways, my point is cats or dogs in my home, I don't care, it is whatever God sends our way because that is how all my pets have been in my home.

I adore both dogs and cats! but they’re definitely very different in terms of their care and environmental needs and so are a good lifestyle fit for different types of people. My experience as a lifelong cat owner who brought up a puppy (alongside 3 cats) in the last 3 years: Dogs are a lot more work, especially up front getting them acclimated and *training*. But they can be much more rewarding, especially if you can establish a good relationship/communication with them. Cats are ~generally~ less work and just chill company most of the time, but actually controlling them is basically impossible. and if you do have cat problems, it can take a long time of creative problem solving/trial and error to work through. cat or dog, it’ll depend on the individual’s personality whether they’re easy or hard to work with, but in general you can really work directly with dogs through behavior problems via training, whereas cat problems often to need to be addressed through adjusting their environment.

It makes me sad when people say cats are less work, because that suggests that they are not putting much effort into enriching their cats' environment, or interacting with them vigorously. If you pay attention and do a good job in all areas, cats are work, not just 'chill companions'.

After a year of bonding with our dog we got a kitten. Both pets are rescues and ridiculously cute and we can't believe how much the kitten has completed the family. We got him partly because we were getting a mouse problem (never had that when we had the previous cat) and we weren't sure how the dog was going to go. They totally love each other! How cat low light vision works is very cool, you mentioned the tapetum lucidum but what this does is actually less allow them to take in more light and more allow them to use the light that they do take in twice. In humans for example our eyes work by focusing light onto our retinas, so the retina is the sensor that picks up an actual image, with cats, their retina actually lets light through to the other side, and that's where the tapetum is, it's pretty much a fancy biological mirror that bounces the light back through the retina again, allowing them to get more detail in low light by creating a composite image.

I wasn't a cat person until I rescued a kitty that was about to be euthanized while I was working in an animal shelter. I had no experience with cats and unlike dogs, I found them hard to read and mysterious. Now thirty years and several cats later, I've figured them out and I absolutely love them.

As someone who never had a cat and adopted one during quarantine, I agree! It was definitely something different then owning dogs. But now I think I prefer cats more 😅

@@solovoyager I know what dogs are about. Within a family they are dominated and may behave. Outside, they are simply not compatible with human society, due to their stupid territorial behavior, Again: they have been bred by humans to be stupid. You walk somewhere, 200 m away from them and they decide to go after you and attack you. A beach full of people, I pass by, they are attacking me, just by random. My brother got bitten into the hand when he was 4 by a dog passing by in a cal city street. I visited a friends friend with the friend, and the dog 30+ kilo tried to bite me, despite we got introduced by the owner... over and over again. period. Go to cesar the dog wisperer. He knows how to dominate them such that they obey. The point is, you have always to make them obey. disgusting.

First I’ve had a dog, now I have a cat, I am for both, they are different, cat is introvert, dog extravert, both great companion for a human, and both loves us in their own way. I really feel it every day.

I used to be a dog lady, only ever had them, til I got a cat and she was my baby when I was younger. Unfortunately, she ran away and never came home some years back. I now live on my own with two boys, Meeko (a 2 yr old severely asthmatic DMH) and Biggie, a 6-7 yr old American standard breed FiV+ boy. They are my world. I love cats and dogs so much. They are both such wonderful little beings, and the best friends or family members I could ever ask for

The wildness of the cat is very pronounced. Being in a comfortable and safe home with plentiful food does not change the fact they prioritize hunting and their own safety. Fascinating and beautiful creatures to share life with.

My dog obeys me. My cat looks at me like I'm speaking Ferengi. He does begrudgingly obey a verbal command (lie down) to get treats. He is 13 and it took 12 years.

I got my cat to sit on command for treats, but she complained every time. My dog was only motivated by treats for some commands. He would sit, shake hands no problem. "Stay" &" Lie Down" would only happen w/treats, & once the treats were gone, he'd wander off & ignore me. He was his own boss.

I definitely understand the greatness of having both cats and dogs at the same time. I have 2 cats and a dog. I love all of them for different reasons!❤😺🐶

Great video! I had no idea that cats as family members has been relatively recent. I am bipetual :). I was a dog person and then had friends and family with cats … fast forward to my husband leaving me (and our dog .. my insistence!). I went to the animal shelter and adopted a kitten who actually chose me. This was over 25 years ago and since, I have always had a dog and a cat. I love the unique relationship with each as well as how the cat and dog relate to each other. I had 1 cat dog pair that took me a year to be able to have them together. Cat was 16 and overweight (bad me!!!) and dog I adopted when he was 6 1/2 and not a “cat dog”. I did a bad job at the introduction and then was anxious since the cat was not as agile as a younger normal weight cat would be. Still … with help from a dog trainer (clicker training) we eventually all lived together in harmony. Loved the senses comparison. I often think that just for a short time I would like to smell and hear like a dog or cat. Thanks for this, Jackson!!

I have a Maine Coon so I basically have a dog and a cat in one. Haha he fetches, he responds to his name and comes when I call him, he loves belly rubs. He’s an angel and I highly recommend Maine Coons for people who love dogs but can’t have a dog due to limitations, whether physical or housing or whatever. I grew up with fish tanks in my house and I can honestly say my cat is easier to take care of then a fish. I’m a cat person for life now, but I’m also bipetual cause I can’t wait to bring my dream, a golden retriever, into my life in the near future ❤️
