The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

Күн бұрын

This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
In this reading, we learn that all sinners are the authors of Christ’s Passion. We do not blame the Jews for the Crucifixion of Jesus as we know that it is our own sins that caused his Passion and death. Fr. Mike tells us that the Jews are not collectively responsible for Jesus’ death, and they should not be spoken of as rejected or cursed. We’re reminded that when we choose sin and deny Christ by our deeds, we crucify him anew in our hearts. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 595-598.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. This podcast is free and always will be. But, we have limited resources. With funding from generous supporters like you, we can do even more than simply create the podcast. Would you consider supporting Ascension’s free media? tinyurl.com/2s.... No amount is too small!
Although not tax-deductible, the financial support we receive goes towards the creation of podcasts and videos that help Catholics grow in their faith. If you’d like to learn more about what we do with gifting, go to AscensionPress.... Thank you and God bless you!

Made it to Day 85 second time around; Lord Jesus I am sorry for all my so sins you carried with you to the Cross. Jesus, thank you for your life, passion, death and resurrection; let us all as Christians take responsibility for our sins and for your crucifixion; keep me from sinning and give me the graces I need to do Gods will for my life every day. Amen. Praying for all the CIY and BIY participants and Ascension Press and for you Fr Mike. And I am especially praying for my Jewish brothers and sisters and all my Christian family and friends who have left the Catholic Church.

Me too. Have you, by chance, completed the Bible in a Year? I have and got so much out of it. Father Mike's commentary makes it so much more understandable. When I read the OT in the past I just got angry, but Father Mike puts it into perspective and explains why it all had to be. Good luck Suzzy. This all makes a lot of sense to me. I'll admit, I struggled with the first parts, but it is all dropping into place now.

Today's catechism was an eye opener for me. For years l have blamed The Roman Empire because it was an EVIL empires, in fact, the Roman empire is considered to be the first Reich of COMMUNISM AND IT LASTED 1000 YEARS, BUT I NEVER BLAMED THE JEWS, IN FACT IT NEVER EVEN DAWNED ON ME TO BLAME THE JEWISH PEOPLE. After today's CIY, of course his passion was all of us sinners. Thank you Father Mike ! You set me straight and for that I'm very grateful.

Day 85 done :) The Church in the 2nd Vatican Council declared that neither all Jews at that time, nor today, are responsible for the death of Jesus' death. It was my sins that crucified Jesus. It was the the worst thing that ever happened. But also, God used it to bring about the greatest good that ever happened, which is our salvation and our redemption I must take responsibility for my part because my part in Christ's passion is real. If my part in Christ's passion is not real, then my share in his resurrection is not real...🥹 Let this not condemn you but let it turn you to Jesus and trusting him in *our brokeness* so we can trust him *his glory*

My Lord and my God! The words of faith from Thomas, the apostle, when he saw and believed in the risen Lord. All doubts disappeared and nothing else mattered. Thomas followed the Lord to his own martyrdom. Did he ever look back to his moment of doubt? I suspect he did, but that was healthy. When we come to grips with the reality of our own sin and its role in bringing Christ to His passion, we should say what Thomas did and fall to our knees in love and gratitude. We must never forget our own sins and never blame others, but we should take this great gift and move forward, draw close to our Lord as we journey to our heavenly home. Along the way, we must tell everyone we meet of God’s great love as we share this pearl of great price.

I grew up in a town that had many people of Italian ancestry. Whenever one of them expressed their anti-Semitic view about the crucifixion of Christ, I would point out that it was the Italians (Romans) that sentenced, tortured and crucified Christ. Invariably, their response was very defensive but that opened them up to the reality that all humanity is responsible for Christ's suffering. I think some saw the truth but I fear others were just grateful for "accomplices".

Day 85 takeaways: The Jews are not collectively responsible for Jesus’s death. The Jews shall not be spoken of as rejected or accursed. Every sinner is responsible for Christ’s death. Every time we sin we crucify the Lord anew in our hearts, when we delight in our vices. Let us turn to Him in our brokenness so we can trust Him in His glory. God can always turn the effects of sin into something good if we repent and transform our lives.
