In case anyone's confused, I actually did this one on Patreon before I posted the WE ARE live reaction. So this is actually the 1st reaction, but it was posted 2nd.

I'm half Asian living in Germany and trying to fit in was so hard. I learned to embrace my differences a few years ago when I was around 17 years old and now I'm super proud of my culture. I don't try to fit in anymore because it's impossible anyways

The dance seems to represent our choices made in life. Each move changes our outcomes.. It’s a beautiful symbolism of the decisions we make in life. He tries to fit in with the dance steps, is lifted, then pushed down by his peers.. Ultimately the boy gets a second chance to do it over differently.
@Halosurfer

While I like this take, I saw another one that was more literal. The dance is apparently very common in Japan (at least I assume this is a Japanese dance, I forgot), and the dancer invites him to dance. So he does, but after dancing for a bit, he sees his friends dancing and like he has been doing, he tries to fit in, and starts to follow their movements instead of his own. He messes up, loses his footing and falls down. He’s forgotten his own culture. Once he falls down though, his friends were there to help pick him back up and help him be himself again

My parents settled in UK in the 60s. All my siblings and I were born and raised in the UK. We lived in a town where we were the only ethnic minority. I remember watching this video when it came out, and finding it so relatable. For me as the youngest, the bullying was never more than name calling and even though I had friends, the experience of feeling alone was very relatable. I’m talking about being 6 to 8 years old and when friends weren’t at school, being alone in the playground pondering existential questions about self identity. I found this video so powerful, so well done in telling the story and experience of so many people. Watching you being moved by it, and hearing you say that you find it relatable actually brought tears to my eyes. Thank you

This is another band you gotta hear live. The singer is incredible. I mean the whole band is great but they are amazing live. This MV is very powerful and emotional. Hits you in the feels for real. One OK Rock in general is just fantastic.

I am Greek and Hispanic. Growing up, I turned to drugs and alcohol to help deal with the stress that was on me. My mother was sick, in and out of the hospital. I was having to work from the age of 14 to help with bills because we weren't in a good spot after moving from Greece to Texas(Grandma was going through cancer and we ended up staying in the US for longer than intended. For calrification, we moved to the US when I was 8 or 9, but around 12 is when my mom had gotten really sick and didn't get better). I was tired of being made fun of for speaking with an accent and bringing in food from home. Dishes no one had really seen before. I didn't have enough to buy the school lunch and it was made clear to me that my money I made was used for emergencies ONLY. My sister left when I was 14 and her being older meant i had to stop being a kid and grow up super quickly. So I turned to these things to fit in as well. I got through everything fine, but I never made peace with my mother and told her I accepted my culture and hertiage before she passed in 2015. I never once told her that I was happy to be Greek and Hispanic. I never once told my dad either and he doesn't speak to me anymore. I'm not even sure if he's alive. I made peace with my grandmother in Greece(mom's side of the family, Hispanic, fell apart when my mom passed. She was the glue that kept everyone together.). We talk every morning now and she's constantly checking up on me. I love her and my culture so much, but my biggest regret was not seeing how incredibly happy and carefree I am now that I can accept that. Nevertheless, I know she's still around me and I know she knows I accept who I am now. I know where I come from and I'm not ashamed of that. Not anymore.

Like they always say “Go live!”. With One Ok Rick though “Go Freaking Live!!!” Like seriously do it! 😅 Their live stuff are honestly in a league of its own, even among the several awesome Japanese bands I’ve seen. It’s just so rare these days to see a Rock band absolutely killing it on 50k+ stadiums and OOR do those pretty regularly. Their studio jam sessions are great as well.

Haha you definitely got a little emotional at the end there. And yeah, I got confused but then remembered you said on your "We are" reaction that you would post your first reaction to the band, so thanks for doing that! I enjoyed this reaction. There's so much symbolism in this video, and the dance segment shows a lot. The bian lian dance shows rapid face changing and then the kid's hair and eyes literally change colors. When he tries to dance with the other kids, he can't quite keep up and doesn't quite fit in. I think this is one of the band's best MVs, even though the band doesn't actually show up in it. The video just complements the lyrics so well. Hope you'll do more reactions to the band soon! My favorite song is "The Beginning." Check out their performance at Eye of the Storm Japan Tour.

This is the experience I had even in progressive Silicon Valley California. People didn't even realize joking I was Chinese(Im not) or doing the fox eye thing was insulting. It was like it was done without malice and I didn't mind it too much but it was very emotional to see this music video.

Dude, I'm an InSomnia (Dreamcatcher fan)! I saw your Band-Maid reactions and heard your background music..."Wait...Is that a Dreamcatcher song?!" Then I saw the poster behind you...I have that poster! Dude is a Dreamcatcher fan! AND he loves Band-Maid and now....now, he loves One OK Rock! My favorite KPop group and J-Rock bands. I loved your reaction to Stand Out, Fit In...brutally honest...I had the same reaction also being Asian American...you hit all the emotional and psych points...I seriously had childhood flashbacks as a kid growing up in a white middle-class suburban area. If you want just some pure R&R, watch ONE OK ROCK "Mighty Long Fall" Live at Yokohama Stadium or their latest "RENEGADES".

The hard part about watching this is really how relatable this is. All of this is "normal" pre-2020. Like this is just part of growing up asian-american. Depending on where you live (how large the percentage of non-white in your community), there are varying levels of actual bullying. But all the micro-aggressions with weird looks and ppl judging your food and your lunches -- it's either "weird and gross" or something to ask infinite questions over in some fascination with how "exotic" it is (or to flex how "open minded" they are); judging your (often immigrant) parents and their professions and their level of english fluency. So real and so "normal".
