Agreed. There was a truly unfortunate and rapid drop off in technique as the drugs took hold. Once the "Dirt" album showed glimpses of the darkness they were experiencing with possibly the emotionally heaviest album ever recorded, Layne could never quite recover. In more ways than one. Once you get a chance, I would like if you could do a reaction to something from their third, self titled album where Jerry starts picking up some of the slack and a few of the songs are sung in tandem like "Again". Jerry actually had to do many of the lead vocals solo on that album.

The thing I can't get over in this song is how coherent the whole band feels. The drumming is playing all of these staggering, syncopated beats and never feels off time, the guitar is working through all of these tri-tone scales, the bass is plowing through the foundation, and Lane is spilling his guts out in front. It never feels disjointed even as it is wallowing in dissonance. It's a tremendous accomplishment.

I take some issue with how much the drummer rushes triplets, both here and on Sea of Sorrow right before the chorus- as a drummer, it is off time- but it's part of the charm. Live at The Moore was filmed in ‘91. I personally think when he was sober in ‘93 his voice was even stronger than the Moore Theatre show. If you were in the first 12 rows at one of the Amphitheater shows on the Dirt tour in ‘93, you could absolutely FEEL Layne’s voice when he was hitting high notes! Layne was a phenomenal singer and always in the moment when he was singing. I’m really glad that I saw them as many times as I did. I seriously wish that I could have afforded to see them even more back then, but those Lollapalooza tour dates were so spread out state to state, it was hard to afford the tickets, gas, hotels, doing all the driving ,and getting the time off work as well. I saw them 4 times in ‘93 alone, so I can’t complain.

Unfortunately,l it wasn't only when they hit the bigger stage when drugs were influencing their performances. I saw them back in March 1991 - 5 months after the release of Facelift - they were of all things opening for Megadeth. The Almighty sandwiched in between them - a something of an eclectic mix to say the least! At that point I hadn't heard either AIC or The Almighty and let's just say they had an off night! Layne was general all over the place and they really didn't sell what Facelift had to offer, The Almighty however came out and knocked it out the park - I went away from the gig and bought The Almighty's albums and didn't return to AIC until the release of Dirt. The irony of this being that Facelift nowadays is somewhere in my Top 40 LPs ever - but that performance went down as a forgettable mess to say the least.

Layne Staley was one of the great singers of the grunge era… or any era really. So many rock and metal artists over the years were tortured souls, which you could tell there was no faking anything they performed. It created a strong connection with their listeners, but at the same time a lot of them left this world too soon. Also, I doubt Layne Staley really realized just how good he was because he definitely had one of the most haunting voices in rock history.

I love how you dont look at these vocals just through a classical filter. You look for what makes them unique and special in their own way. Layne Staley is far and away my favorite vocalist from this era (my teenage years) so hearing you listen to the uniqueness that was him and being able to appreciate it for what it was is awesome. You are an inspiration Elizabeth for everyone to keep an open mind. The thought of his vocals ever being autotuned is horrifying to me. I think Wake Up is a track that adds two important aspects to Layne's legacy, as we retrospect. Firstly, places Layne amongst the pantheon of great classic American counter-culture singers - as in those found in the '60s. Yes, he's a great alt-rock singer, but with Wake Up, he transcends that label. His performance in that song is like an echo from the past emerging within him decades later. It sounds absolutely like him, but at the same time requires a double-check. Nowhere else does he sound quite like that. Secondly, and sadly, it hints towards a whole new direction he could have taken as he aged. As such, it really emphasizes that distinctly tragic notion of a life cut short - another, albeit heartbreaking, allusion to the greats. It would be a pleasure to hear an analysis of it on this channel.

@@sharoncarlisle9453 I second your motion for Mark Lanegan. Such a gorgeous, gravelly masterpiece of a voice. Even the Screaming Trees songs showcased him so well (Troubled Times, Dollar Bill) but his solo stuff was really next level.

Mark said Kurt was like his little brother and Layne was his twin. God speed to all our fallen frontmen, Kurt, Layne and Chris and Mark🙏🏾
