Silver Springs was a breakup song about Lindsay Buckingham. Because it was dropped from their album is a big reason they broke up. From an interview of Stevie with People Magazine: “I went to the studio and [bandmates Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham] were in the parking lot, and I got out of the car and they said, ‘We need to talk.’ That's never good,” she recalls to PEOPLE ahead of the release of her Rumours-inspired Barbie doll. Nicks quickly learned that the duo had confronted her to share that they were scrapping her haunting masterpiece - which also happened to be about her recent split from Buckingham, 73. “Do you mean ‘Silver Springs,’ probably the best song I've ever written?” she remembers saying to the pair. “And they're like, ‘Well, yeah. Let's move on with that.’” The slow-build song was axed to make room for “I Don't Want to Know,” another, much shorter product of Nicks’ pen - and one that she was both less fond of and less emotionally attached to.

Christine was a giant for FM. Often the glue that held the band together, she was generous in sharing the stage with Stevie (a lesser talent, IMO). I'm starting to warm up, thanks to Liz here, to Ms. Nicks. I've long thought of her as a lightweight, harmless element of a truly great band. I've followed FM since even before their beginning as a John Mayall fan.

@@alkholos Interesting take. Everyone in FM was vital, but I don't think they would have had their success without Stevie Nicks. She's a great singer with the best and most unique voice of the 3 vocalists. The songs would have still been great without her as McVie and Buckingham were stronger songwriters. But she had that front-person charisma that every great band needs.

Old chick here….back in the late 70’s we couldn’t just pull up a song on Spotify. In order to get this beautiful song, I had to sneak into a “head shop” ( where they sold bongs and weed pipes) . They had a small vinyl record section in the back. This song was on the B-side of a 45. I paid probably $2.00 at most. I put the 45 in my backpack and biked all the way home on my 10-speed bike. I played this song over and over on my crappy little record player. Back then, it was like finding gold ! Few people even knew about this song bcuz it was never released on their album. Finally, years later, Stevie re-recorded this treasure and released it to the world. THANK YOU for FINALLY reviewing this masterpiece. Lifetime Stevie Fan ❤

Back then i could have told to you Stevie Nicks bra size but that 45 was not exactly common knowledge to the 15-20million who bought Rumours..because honestly who buys an album and later the 45 with the same song and an unknown b side and generally B-sides were well ....right B sides...Go Your Own Way is one of my favorite songs ever.. Id think all-timeTop Ten Outros. SilverSprings is a really good song..Id think all-time Top Ten Stalker/Fatal Attraction Songs..Im not sure Lindsay Buckingham gets away with writing those lyrics..I did see him backing slowly away at the end and running down the street with his fiddle guitar strapped to his back .I lost sight when he ducked into a little Bodega...Fiestawood Macket

Old dude here....a few gemstones I've come to find (I'm german. So these might not all be familiar with you. Hopefully.) The album Buckingham Nicks, for sure. Before they came to be members of Fleetwood Mac. The album First Base by Netherland's band Babe Ruth. Janita "Jenny" Haan is so amazing! Try: "The mexican". White Bird by "It's A Beautiful Day". Also released on the solo album from David LaFlamme. The album Black Magician by Rumplestiltskin. A "supergroup", consisting of Clem Cattini on dr, Herbie Flowers bg, Peter Lee Sterling voc (aka known as Daniel Boone with his song Beautiful Sunday) The album 666 by greek band Aphrodite's Child with Irene Papas as a guest singer on "eternity". I learned to dance "free" to the song "Also sprach Zarathustra" by Eumir Deodato. At a party on a farm. A friend had brought his PA in his small Mercedes truck. 2x 1900W. Both towers of speakers taller than us. Police came early, next morning. Citizens from a town, some 3mls away had conplained about "the noise". Haha! We've achived a similar kind of attraction here on my brother's 18th birthday, back in 1981. We where listening to some great music. The city of Pinneberg was, too! (Living up on a hill, here.) Try find the song Boureè by the great Jon Lord. It's on his album Sarabande. Some new stuff: Revenant by The Warning. I'm athesist. But...still... Pau (the drummer) is singing. Angelic voice! Food for ears, I hope!

Their live performances of "The Chain" from 1982 and 1997 and the way they fuel each other in their ad-libs and emotion is truly incredible. The 1982 live performance may be one of the most visceral performances I have ever seen. The amount of primal emotion during that performance is very uncomfortable to watch while at the same time, being extremely beautiful. But the 1997 performance feels quite different in that it feels more painful and regretful but is equally beautiful. One of my all time favorite bands.

Anyone who thinks this is just theatrics must not be aware of the last time these people got together 10 years earlier (10 years AFTER "Rumours.") Lindsey and Stevie got in to a physical altercation at a band meeting (hitting, choking!), Stevie screaming "You broke my heart!" that was followed by Lindsey leaving the band. Coupled with the history of the song rarely being performed live and being left off the LP if you think the emotions should have been gone by then you just don't get it.

You can almost see the hurt, pain, love, loss, forgiveness, and beauty of a shared life and art pass between them as they sing and make amazing music. Everyone on stage is an ex of each other in one way or another and they still can come together and make this kind of magic. Wow.

Hey, yes, you've described it perfectly. Those emotions between Stevie and Lindsey were always there, accompanied by a lot of pain. It's their private thing - we as fans of Fleetwood Mac should respect that and be grateful for the great music this band has given us over almost 6 decades. The Chain is a union of 5 diamonds. No matter who was missing at any time, they were missed and came back. We have already lost Christine, and yet she is in our hearts. But it was made clear with this that life is finite... so all FM fans should appreciate who from "The Chain" is still with us. Her great songs and music connect us too.

Whether it is the music or the lyric, the emotional trauma of loss can be an amazing creative inspiration. Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham, as well as Christine McVie, wrote some magnificent songs out of the heartbreaks (and joys) they experienced. I saw them in the early 1980s, and will never forget what a brilliant concert they put on. The most popular song of the late Victorian period was The Lost Chord, an 1860 poem by Adelaide Proctor that Arthur Sullivan had tried to pen a tune for, but for years was not satisfied with his efforts. Then in 1877, at the bedside of his dying brother Frederic, Sullivan found his way at last. He didn't even intend it to be sold commercially, this before the days of recordings. After a couple of prominent singers of the day introduced it, it became the best selling sheet music for decades.

Fleetwood Mac is epic level music. They’re absolutely legendary. This is the kind of music, along with hard rock, guitar rock (Clapton, Nugent, Frampton, Boston, etc.), and southern rock (ZZ Top), that I grew up with. Bands like this were the soundtrack of my late mother and my late uncle’s lives, and therefore my early life. I eventually migrated to heavy metal, and so did my mother in my trail. But we never forgot these classic bands, and her radio seldom shifted from our local classic rock stations. Little wonder I picked up a guitar myself, like my uncle before me. Playing guitar for my mother in the last, painful, disease crippled years of her life was one of the few worthwhile things I’ve accomplished. I wish she were still here for me to play for. I had so many songs left to learn just for her. She loved Deff Leopard, and I was planning to study their music for her, but I never got the chance. Death beat me to her. I’ve barely touched my instruments since she passed, despite buying my first 7-string recently. I should probably change that. Keep playing in her memory, but damn I wish I could still play for her. She and my cat were all the audience I’ve ever needed. Now they’re both gone. Ah well, the musings of the old. These bands bring back memories of a youth that seems so very far away. Except when I play…
