The reason Rumors was such a great album was because of the tension in the band. Stevie and Lindsey broke up. John and Christine's marriage was over. Mick Fleetwood's marriage also ended. Christine wrote "You Make Lovin Fun" about one of the lighting techs. Stevie started seeing Mick(the drummer). Then Mick cheated on Stevie with her best friend Sara. They were all young, had some money, and were all sleeping around, and doing a lot of coke. Basically every song on the album is about another band member. Dreams is about Lindsey. Go Your Own Way is Lindsey's message to Stevie. Rumors is the greatest Pop Rock album ever made. It's because the drama, the feelings, and the people involved were all real. They all lived through it. And they cared enough about the music to finish the album and not let the personal hell they were living through get in the way. As a work of art, it's a masterpiece. There's nothing phony or fake about it.

Johnathon beat me to it. IIRC, "Rumors" was the biggest record they ever had, and one of the biggest records of all time. They didn't splinter, they wrote the songs and did the work. I'll admit, though - after the dang thing made so much money, a lot of their reaction was kind of '..oh, I guess we're stuck with each other now..' 😉

Stevie and Mick had an affair starting with the Rumours Tour that went on for almost 2 years after he had remarried Jenny and at the time she was dating Henley, Paul Fishkin and other guys. Oh and still in her words getting drunk and getting with Lindsey from time to time. "I need to dedicate this tonight to Lindsey, & he knows why -- He's my one true love for now & for always. It's called LANDSLIDE." - UCLA Oct. 4, 1977 (Rumours Tour) ... Sara was a friend she met when having an affair with Sara's husband Jim Recor. Recor is the one that told Stevie in 1979 that Sara had moved in with Mick. Mick dumped Stevie but not before going over to Lindsey's 3 days before and telling Lindsey about their long running affair. Meanwhile they had just started recording Tusk. If you thought recording Rumours was bad....

Exactly! Lindsey wrote "go your own way" at Stevie, an angry (coke-raging) young man not accepting his contribution to the end of the relationship, and here, he seems to accept her pain and endures it with her. Also.....great performance of the meaning of the song..they are giving the audience the full story despite the impetus for the song being two decades in the past.

When somebody still feels it this raw 20 years after the fact, it goes to show you how strong and real it was. That emotion she shows on stage for Silver Springs is as fresh as it was in 1977...I saw them do this in 1997 at MSG in NY City and I was floored. The song was supposed to go on the rumors album in 1977 but there wasn't enough space available ,so they just made it a single, what a mistake ! I think this may very well be the best song Stevie Nicks has ever done... Lindsay and Stevie's relationship was not one of those typical Hollywood marriages ,within three minutes after they break up, one of them is off vacationing in Bali with their nutritionist or personal trainer. You know like that Gisele Bundchen. She must have been really traumatized over her breakup with Tom Brady. The ink on the divorce wasn't even dry yet and she already had a new boyfriend lined up. I broke up with my ex 3 years ago and I'm still having a hard time. It just goes to show you that Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks really had what one would call true romance . Their 1977 album wasn't called Rumors by accident. Christine and John McVie we're breaking up, Christine was in the midst of an affair with a roadie or guitar tech for the band. Mick Fleetwood was divorcing his wife ( Jenny Boyd,sister of George Harrison's wife) and having an affair with Stevie Nicks. So they appropriately named the album rumours because God Only knows rumors were flying at the time!!!!

He was the music director on stage and he also co-produced this show and produced the album. He's helping pull the performance out of her. They filmed this over three days and Stevie said she wasn't happy with the first two. She said they were getting along so well it she was able to be vulnerable but here she was finally able to let it rip. Interesting to think that by 1997 it had been 30 years since they started in a band together. Personally and musically they know how to push each other's buttons.

This song meant a lot to Stevie for many reasons. It was written for the Rumours album about her view of her break-up with Lindsey. But the group cut it from the album because they needed to cut down the time & also they felt it's slower tempo didn't quite fit with the other songs. Stevie almost left the band as a result. She was so angry. 20 years later (in this tv concert) they recorded the live performance and it became the hit that Nicks always believed it would be.

But stevie was very narcissistic at the time and it made her Ill to sing night after night . Not to mention even the songs she did write she only wrote the lyrics so all Lindsay is doing is playing the music to it HE wrote. While she had to sing his actual lyrics. So no she wasn't the queen lol

@@mykebreeden The music wasn't necessarily Lindsey's. Stevie could play piano (granted, not as well as Christine) enough to write her own tunes. You have to understand that this is an old song. While almost assuredly about Lindsay, they've done this song before. While Stevie obviously drew from their problem-ridden relationship of the past to pen this wonderful and passionate song, and some of those looks reflected that, Lindsay was actually giving Stevie facial cues for when she should begin the ad libs near the end of the song. and he was sweating because performing and performing under those lights makes one really hot.

I believe this video performance is from 1997, 20 years after the song was actually recorded. This song was written by Stevie for the “Rumours” album but Mick Fleetwood (the drummer) squashed its inclusion on the album. However, it was released as the B-side of the 45 single (I know you’re way to young to remember 45s😂) of “Go Your Own Way”. Such a soap opera! Lindsey’s response to the breakup on the A-side, Stevie’s response to the breakup on the B-side and the end result of “Rumours” being one of the greatest relationship albums ever made! One of the greatest albums ever!! The passion of that music gave way to incredible, very personal live performances. But the band was always consummate, professional musicians onstage. They continued to make albums together in the 80s, 90s and 2000s and continued to tour off and on together with the classic lineup of Nicks/Christine/Lindsey/John McVie/Mick Fleetwood through 2015, until Lindsey left the band for good in 2018 and the devastating loss of Christine McVie last year. What an iconic group of musicians.❤️❤️

In the few moments he’s shown in this video, he’s playing (brilliant, as always) bass parts that make this song sound like there’s an orchestra back there somewhere, but he’s got his head down. About Lindsey sweating: keep in mind that stage lights are *hot* and pointing at the band from every conceivable angle, AND this song was performed approximately halfway through a 1.5 hour concert. But yeah - I have seen videos of various performances over the years, and Stevie + Lindsey *always* channelled that tension between them… it’s like they re-enacted the entire arc of their relationship, from love to anger to sadness to resignation, over and over across the decades… As far as how the rest of the band felt? Trust me, they had lots of their own relationship dramas going on too. Lol . Fleetwood Mac is like a primetime soap opera both on and off stage !

There is a live version of “go your own way” where I think the breakup was very fresh. Lindsey sings and Stevie is on backup in a black top hat. You can definitely see in their faces how personal it is. It was written by Lindsey specifically about the breakup from what I’ve heard. It’s a great song and performance but also very emotionally revealing.

Fleetwood Mac is actually one of the rare bands that never did officially disband, despite their turmoil. Stevie did her solo career while remaining in the band, meanwhile, some of the other band members’ had their solo projects as well. I saw them on my birthday in 2018. Being a huge fan, it was absolutely incredible. It was entrancing. Through the various lineups with interchanging band members, heartbreaks, hostility, drugs, and alcohol over the years- it was about rock n roll, for them it was all about the music, about the band. And still is. It’s pretty remarkable that Fleetwood Mac has kept going, almost like it’s own entity. They’re a perfect example of captivating, real artists. I love that you love them as well Jay and Amber!!!! I look forward to every time you do anything Fleetwood Mac-related, it’s a great joy for me. Love it

They disbanded in 1995 after the latest round of replacements. They'd degenerated into 2nd billed playing county fairs and their album didn't even chart on the Billboard 200. Mick dismissed the other members realizing it was a new configuration too far. Then Mick and John were working as session musicians for Lindsey which eventually lead to The Dance in 1997.

It also shows a bit more of Mic Fleetwood's drumming and, well, it's about the same level of intense as this. It amuses me whenever it cuts to Christine, because she's like the calm in the storm. I remember as a kid hunting down the 45 of “Go Your Own Way” just to get this song (it was the B side) since it was cut from the Rumours album. To me, it’s one of Stevie’s greatest songs. Also, Stevie was PISSED at Lindsay about “Go Your Own Way” because of the “shacking up” line. That made “Silver Springs” as the B side extra drama-tastic

This song was written to go on the "Rumors" album in 1977 but it got cut from the album for various reasons and that is one of the reasons it was still so emotional for Stevie...she was bitter about her beautiful song being cut. And yes, it is about Lindsey. They put it on the B side of "Go Your Own Way" in '77, which, ironically, is Lindsey's song about Stevie. So here it was in 1997 when they got back together for a tour...20 years after she had written it and they put it on a new album and the song actually got nominated for a Grammy the next year. Stevie said she had passed a sign in travels that said Silver Springs (Maryland) and thought it sounded like a nice place to be. So she wrote it about Lindsey....he could have been her Silver Springs

The sound of Fleetwood Mac is like nothing else. RIP Christine. You need to check out some of Lindsey's solo work - "Trouble", "Holiday Road", "Go Insane". The dynamic between Lindsey and Stevie has always been one with a lot of tension. It is what made a good hunk of their music so incredible. Christine McVie was also married to John McVie on Bass and that tension was there. Stevie had an affair with Mick Fleetwood after she left Lindsey so the dysfunction in the band was so strange, but it made for incredible music. But as you mentioned, that tension did have its internal issues, which led to the band breaking up for a long time.

Agreed. FMac historians know that drama even pre-dates Buckingham & Nicks joining the band. FM fired former guitarist Bob Weston for sleeping with Mick’s wife. Former guitarist Jeremy Spencer left FM to join a cult. A different cult hooked founder Peter Green on acid, leading to his departure.
@caps689
@caps689 2 жыл бұрын
@@straycatttt2766 Peter Green was schizophrenic, he'd been doing acid and other drugs for awhile (probably self medicating ) before the trip that pushed him over the edge. Meanwhile there was also poor doomed brilliant young Danny Kirwin who had mental health problems and was an alcoholic who tried to beat Green with his Les Paul. Green though wouldn't fire him or even Jeremy Spencer who often did not show up or refused to play which is why he hired Kirwin and FM had 3 guitarists. John McVie was also an ugly alcoholic which lead Christine to sleeping with the sound engineer. All pre B&N. Buckingham & Nicks may have also been messy but their joining at least made the others millionaires multiple times over. 😆

You all need to give a little more credit to Mr. Lindsay Buckingham. First, she wouldn't have been in the band without him. Mic Fleetwood wanted Lindsay as his new singer and guitarist. Lindsay said, "Not without my girlfriend." Second, he definitely can hold his own in writing song about the breakup. Go Your Own Way is one of the best songs on the Rumors album. Which is tough on a nearly flawless record. Lastly, Landslide was written before they joined Fleetwood Mac. It is more about whether she was going to give up her dreams of music and her father buying her a ticket back to LA. At the time, Lindsay was part of that future.

OMG, the historical soap opera between the members of this band is legendary. Which is part of what made their album Rumors so successful. There was no holds barred mud-slinging going back and forth through their music. Lindsey and Stevie were breaking up as were Christine and John McVie. Mick Fleetwood had his own personal drama going on in his marriage. It was a perfect storm of breakups and a whole lot of hurt feelings. Lindsey certainly voiced his opinion on the ending of their relationship with Go Your Own Way and Stevie responded with Dreams. I strongly encourage you to read about the history of the band from the perspectives of Mick Fleetwood, Carol Ann Harris (who dated Lindsay for several years), and the biographies written about Stevie Nicks drawing from interviews she has given over the years. As awkward as watching this performance is (YEARS after the breakup between Stevie and Lindsey), imagine the tensions in the studio during the recording of Rumors and subsequent albums! In spite of the turmoil, none of the members were quite ready to walk away from the success of Fleetwood Mac and the music they were able to produce at that time. Mick Fleetwood, the drummer, was very instrumental (no pun intended) in keeping Fleetwood Mac together - even when members of The Mac insisted on working in separate studios away from one another and having their tracks added as part of the final production.
