I met Heart by accident many years ago in Dublin. I was working there and they stayed at the same hotel. They were in the bar after the gig and someone I was talking to noticed them. He went over and asked them if they’d do a song at the piano! Cheeky or what? Anyway, the keyboard player immediately got up and waltzed over to the piano followed by a smiling Nancy. They did about 40 minutes of standards and Nancy absolutely belted them out. She has one hell of a voice and she was six feet away from me. I’d never been a fan and still haven’t bought a single Heart song. However, my admiration for Nancy and her voice is enormous. She seemed really nice too 😊

Fun story I've heard about the recording of this song. Apparently on the day of recording, Nancy had a cold. If you listen carefully to her vocal on the chorus you can hear a delightfully raspy, gravely quality to her voice. The producers loved it- even if she never really sounded like that again.

Nancy also gave Eddie Van Halen his 1st acoustic guitar that he used in shows. The story is that they were just hanging out after a show one night and she asked him how he wrote on an acoustic guitar and then used his Frankenstrat to transform it. He said he didn't own an acoustic, so she grabbed one if her own, gave ut to him, and they did some jamming, which Edward used a lot in his later compositions

MTV had only existed for 5 short years back then (August 1981). The music videos were umm, basic. It was the end of the 80’s videos really became their own art form, almost separate from the songs at times. The early videos were basically attempts to capture the song live with some simple video tricks, they only had a few tricks. Fall into the water, then reverse the film and they rise up. Reminds me of the Monkees videos Forward & backwards😂

Right, tapping utilizes hammer-ons and pull-offs to achieve various effects but, in the case of this song, the sound is absolutely a synth, not a guitar. There are plenty of examples in music video history of members of the band depicted as playing numerous things that they didn't actually play in the recording of their respective music. The members of the band simply need/want to be included in the visuals. We must trust our ears, not our eyes!

When it's used for things like "Eruption", or "Beat It", it's called finger-tapping. But when it's used like in this video, it's called "just fake something for the camera because we don't have a keyboard set up to mime the synths." The continuity of the instruments and vocals in this video was very sketchy.

The real takeaway from that interview was that Ann's voice is as compelling and captivating in the spoken word as it is in song. Such a full, rich and 'lived-in' sound, like Ann has taken the mantra of 'comfortable in my skin' and adapted it for her voice. Someone here in chat suggested interviewing Ann & Nancy. You can't win as a react channel sometimes. lol If she did that live version then people on the comments would be spamming how she should have done the studio version. lol We often forget we grew up on these bands, and have dissected every part of their content and art. We put unfair expectations on a first reaction. Since we have seen all of it, we pick what we think is best and project it onto the react content creator. I feel the same when people get angry or annoyed that a person doesn't get the full meaning of a song on first listen. As if we haven't heard the songs ourselves 1000s of times. Expecting a react channel to get a song perfect on a first blind listen is just unfair. But people get attached to music and it sort of make them take it personally, even though they shouldn't. lol

One thing I always liked about this song is they don't do the standard call-and-respond echo that a lead/backup singer will do. They do a respond-and-call instead. For instance when Ann says "Weaker in my eyesight" in the background just before Nancy sings the same line as lead.

Both of the Wilson sisters were gifts to the rock n' roll world. Ann's lead vocals are obviously iconic in most of their hit songs, but Nancy's vocal talent was extremely underrated and underused in my opinion. I like this song more and more as I get older because I notice subtleties in the song almost every time I listen to it. Featuring Nancy as the lead vocalist in a Heart song is a rarity, but it can't be overstated how much Ann's skill as a singer pushes this song to the next level. The way she dances around the key and creates these unique harmonies is truly a thing of beauty. Glad you made a video about this song, keep up the great work.

This brings back so many memories of my high school years. I think I was a junior or senior when this came out. I distinctly remember one of my friends going to see Heart in concert after this album came out. Los Angeles, mid-80s, the hair, the clothes and then this song shows up out of nowhere. So different from anything we had heard from Anne and Nancy before or since. The day after the concert, my friend brought in a glossy, concert book to 5th period. I wasn't the only one who was jealous as we pored over every single page. Good times.

Since you asked! This is very much a Nancy song, and one of the few instances she gets to showcase her voice compared to Ann. Also, the video is deceptive; I don’t know if they cut in shots of Ann singing the verses so people weren’t confused that this is indeed Heart, but Ann is primarily is backup on the track, doing the “pre-peat” in later verses, and so on. This is more obvious in the live versions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6bOnq2jbs6KkJIsi=CusPZ9mr7fQOLN0r There’s also this behind-the-scenes video of Nancy recording the track: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2SUXpKrm72ch7ssi=pg8IQTt3PnGdw63N Hahaha so sorry for the infodump, but I went down a Heart rabbit hole about a year ago - possibly when you were covering some of their ‘70s work. Just so wild a band can reinvent themselves for an era but still BE themselves through and through, and the Wilsons in particular still being powerhouses in the 21st century. Absolutely incredible performers and songwriters.

This is far and away in my top three Heart songs, and I love that we hear Nancy more in it. Elizabeth, I greatly enjoy your channel. It is such a joy to see your reactions to hearing a lot of this music for the first time. I also greatly appreciate the vocal analysis. Being a vocalist myself, though admittedly not the greatest, I've been taking pointers from your analyses in order to improve. Thank you so much. I love this song... but I didn't know until watching this very video that the official music video that was utilized as source material, which undoubtedly was played on MTV hundreds of times, skips an entire verse. There is a second verse before the first chorus on the album version, and having never actually seen the official music video before, it was very noticeable, not to mention quite jarring, to me. It's only another 25 seconds... it makes no sense to cut it out when there is a very atmospheric transition that takes place Verse 1 and Verse 2 before going into the first chorus, and I feel this particular edit of the song suffers on account of its absence. If anyone is interested in hearing the missing part, I found a video of the "unsullied by MTV or the short sighted Capitol Records execs who thought that 4 minutes 15 seconds is too long for a successful single " version (a.k.a. the album version), and put the link below. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmrUaH6kq7uhqK8 I was very intrigued to learn that this song was co-written by Bernie Taupin (who wrote all of Elton John's best stuff), and it was originally intended for and offered to Stevie Nicks, who had no interest in recording it. Thank goodness the Wilson sisters and their bandmates had the good sense that Stevie lacked in that moment, and to be honest, even though I like Stevie Nicks, I don't think she really could have done this song as well as Nancy and Ann do.

Did you know that Nancy Wilson was the girl in the car laughing at Judge Reinhold's character while in the pirate suit in Fast Times at Ridgemont High? At the time of filming, Nancy was dating Cameron Crowe - the guy who wrote the screenplay for Fast Times, so she got a cameo. At any rate, I'm still trying to get STEVE PERRY from Journey to be reviewed. He has not been reviewed once. This is the fifth time Heart has been reviewed. Nancy sings lead throughout. The rasp in here voice is mainly because she had a cold when she sang on this take. She tried several more takes later on, but could never match this version, so they kept it. Going to see Heart this March in Sacramento, first time in almost 50 years for me, very excited! And if you to hear more from great female voices, more songs from The Warning would be appreciated. They released a new album in June, and they are breaking all over the world. They just toured Europe a few months back and just announced 3 shows in Brazil next year. And I don't believe you have reacted to a song where Paulina sings the lead; her vocals on "23" will amaze you.
