Ann just had one of those one of kind voices you can't even explain. Amazing instrument. And the look on stage. To us back then it was more than you could take in that rock goddess hair, makeup, costume when they were young. Overload. Have you done Abba Dancing Queen. I know we're all about rock, but it could be an interesting review. The octave change they say was just unreasonable, but those girls pulled it off.

100%! At first I was just like "let her sing" while she was doing the setup, though admittedly that's completely unfair given the point of this channel. It's almost like once I started thinking about the song I couldn't have been able to even continue on with my day without the catharsis of at least hearing the first verse and chorus. Heart is just so amazing.

The story behind this song is so badass. When Ann was given the lyrics to this song she initially didn’t want to do this track at all. She said “this song sounds like a whiny bitch”. So legendary. Not many bands have been able to last through decade changes in culture and sound. But Heart did it better than everyone. IMO

Please do a reaction for (or at least check out) Heart's "These Dreams"... Lead vocals are by Nancy instead of Ann and Ann does some interesting things with the background vocals, it was Heart's first #1 hit, (1986) it was written by Bernie Taupin and Martin Page and was originally offered to Stevie Nicks. I'd suggest the studio version or "Live in Seattle" version ❤️

I don't think I'll ever get tired of going back to old videos and seeing Elizabeth's eargazems! 🤣 I always loved Heart's sound, and now I can be super nerdy and explain why! Thank you!

Heart were so incredibly gifted to be able to field not 1 but 2 two seriously kick ass front line power females as singers. People forget how good Nancy was too, even though their later style of music saw Ann take more of the lead vocals than earlier in their careers. Due to their different styles they had amazing flexibility. Ann had the greater range but Nancy would still have been a highly successful lead for the band. Kind of like the Righteous Brothers they complemented each other perfectly.

This was a standard grand piano sound on electric keyboards (even cheaper ones) when I was a kid in the 80s. Ive had the sheet music for this song on the piano since I was 15, back in 1991.

Assuming I recall it correctly. There were often multiple type piano sounds. My access was to lower end models, but I was fortunate to have a 1919 upright growing up.

Written by Tom Kelly (who also sang that super high backing vocal - it's not Nancy). The original version was in a different key. Tom sang on many hits from the 70s through the 90s. He and his writing partner wrote a ton of hits. Tom's nickname was "the dogwhistle" because he could sing that high without going falsetto.

I'm sure you've heard this song many, many times, but just weren't paying attention: it's on frequent rotation on the 'radio' played in retail stores. When I worked in grocery in Nevada, I heard this song 2-3 times per shift. I hear it at least once a day now, managing a drug store.

When I saw you reacted to this classic song, I have to say it was hard. Quite challenging in fact. I wanted to fast forward right away but I restrained myself and sat patiently waiting to see your reaction to the infamous scream during the guitar solo was priceless! Heart without question is one of those groups that can be described as legendary.

I think I can help with the piano question. This is not first-hand knowledge of hearts instrumentation for the song (so I may be wrong, but Heart did use one for sure), but the piano sounds like it is a Yamaha CP-70. This was an acoustic portable grand piano wired with electric pickups similar to an electric guitar. Because the strings were shortened for portability, the sound was a compromise, albeit a good one considering performers could now travel with the same piano used on the studio version. As was common with many pre-sampler electronic instruments, the resulting sound while reminiscent of the target sound instead resulted in its own unique and recognizable sound. In the case of the CP-70, the sound was an amplified acoustic piano sound that was heavy on the harmonics, thus the crisp "synthesized' sound you spoke of. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_CP-70

Ann Wilson’s high belt in this song, and Floor Jansen’s high note scream at the end of Ghost Love Score at that show in Wacken, are the 2 greatest moments in female rock vocalist history as far as I’m concerned.

That being said there are some spots Here like in the live shows where it is Nancy switching off in some phrases, taking the lead line lower harmony while Ann goes high.. You're absolutely right about the almost perfect blend of the sister's voices. An amazing combination of talent, and genetics.. Seems like they breathe, shape, and delivery exactly the same

I think this might sound familiar because there was a TV commercial in the 90s for Bodyform that used a song that sounded similar. I don't know if you had that commercial over there but it was well known in the UK. I read somewhere that the brief for the song was 'something like Alone by Heart'. When I heard Alone recently I went back and checked if it was the same song.

The sad irony of this era of Heart was that while they were putting out fantastic records, the record company was treating Ann like garbage due to her weight. She's on record saying that she was utterly miserable during the late eighties/early nineties period. She is a goddess no matter what; the greatest female voice in rock history.

Yes, to all of that. You can see in the video production, there are almost no non-closeup shots of Ann, and the few that occur, are either from a distance, or she's in shadow, or both. Her hair was styled to make her face appear slimmer. The video production works really hard to hide the weight gain. That was pretty awful treatment of her, and typical of media marketing, especially of the time, but something that still happens today, and especially to women. Never saw Meatloaf getting the "you're just too fat" treatment, and Ann Wilson is a thousand times more gorgeous than him on any day, no matter what her weight. She is indeed a goddess, both in appearance and in voice.

Agreed. They treated her horribly. They also treated Nancy horribly. She hated all those skin tight outfits and the big hair. The 80's brought them a lot of success but not a lot of happiness.

The record companies had one arrow in their quiver in the 80s and 90s.... They tried to make every female artist a sex symbol. They didn't look at how talented they were... If Heart wasn't an established force from the 70s, if Ann didn't have the outstanding voice and talent... I'm sure they would have pushed to replace her with someone they could promote in a skimpy outfit. They did that to Martha Wash for the song Gonna Make You Sweat... They used Zelma Davis lip syncing in the video and didn't even credit Martha until she sued and got them to give her credit.
