I love your critiques. I just watched your Poets of the Fall analysis before this. If you want to analyze another one of theirs, listen to "The Poet and the Muse". It is from a video game called Alan Wake(great game). In the video game, the band is called "Old Gods of Asgard" which is actually Poets of the Fall who did the music for the game. The lyrics might not make sense as it directly plays a part in the story of the game, however the song is an fantastic example of their talent.

Incubus was a big part of my childhood in the early 2000s. I finally dug into their whole body of work around when Covid hit- they got me through it all. I’ve now seen them live 5 times: including their 2022 Red Rocks show. I’ve met so many incredible people BECAUSE of them, made friends, and even met them, and they are SO kind. It was so hot in Atlanta, and Brandon gave me his water, while they all lectured my friends on the importance of hydration and happily handed over the rest of their waters😅- they’re amazing, in every way, and they deserve all their flowers.

Totally agree with the "anytime voice" take! His voice is so universal that I find myself listening to them no matter what I feel. It also helps that the other members of the band and their sound have this "universal feel" to them. Also, his live vocal performances sound exactly like the studio albums. His vocal prowess is part of what differentiates them from their contemporaries. It is such a treat to watch them live cause you know you'd be getting your money's worth. Though I can say I became a huge super fan was until make yourself. Now that could be timing. Make yourself came out when I was in high school along with marijuana. That 3 album run of science to morning view is hard to beat. Once dirk left the band they lost something. No offense to Ben Kinney. Brandon has said in interviews that with each album he just tries to make it more difficult for himself vocally to just allow his voice rise to the challenge. I remember listening to this album for an entire year. Make Yourself didn't leave my Sony Discman at any point during 2000. Really one of my all-time favorite albums. So many incredible tracks. Drive is one of my favorite songs by Incubus. I used to use a short little guitar riff from that song as the text alert on my phone back in the day. I also agree that Incubus is a good "anytime" band. Another good "anytime" band for me is A Perfect Circle. Similar in the sense that they aren't too heavy, and have a little bit more of an "easy listening" type vibe.

Warning, Anna Molly, Aqueous Transmission, and Certain Shade of Green are all wonderful tracks from these fellas I think you'd like. Also I'd love to see you get into Blue October some time. Weight of the world live would be great for vocal analysis but honestly you can probably go nuts. A lot of their songs are powerfully emotional so just be prepared for that.

I'm always blown away by Brandon just straight killing it live along with the rest of the band ! - It's just unreal. Some of their live recordings are better than than the studio versions of their songs. I have always been a fan - a thrash/surf rock band that creates this level of complexity in almost every song ? That's actual talent.

Brandon's voice, speech patterns, annunciations, accent and pitch/tone control remind me of Karen Carpenter. Although, I can hear a "lisp" or some sort of speech difference when Karen speaks (spoke) It seems to me they both pronounce "R's" similarly. Maybe has to do with how close they grew up to each other in LA area. Thanks for diving into Incubus for us. I was never really sure if they were that tight or had studio help. I think your analysis validates their underrated greatness.

As a guitar player, Ive always loved mike for delivering truly ground breaking guitar tones and techniques, and I always could sort of understand what was going on. But for Brandon I never could capture what technically makes him truly remarkable and youve nailed it with the diction, breath placement, etc. Thanks for this video for one of my fav bands!

That was Mike Einziger creating one of his 'swells', proving he is not just into metal style power chords (chorus) but he takes the role of a keyboardist as well. His playing is as unique as Brandon's singing is. And not to forget the splendid rhythm guys on bass and drums. This song is capturing at once, but also genius when you look at the details. For me criteria of good music regardless of style.

Mikes got such versatility to do metal riffs, funk riffs, and things you never even thought LOL. Truly a worldclass band from top to bottom talent all over the place!

You describing Boyd's voice as an "anytime voice" makes my day. The album this is from, Make Yourself, is my absolute favorite album. I could listen to it every day, yet only be able to critique it regarding how it fit into my life at the time. This is my second-favorite song, after "The Warmth," also in The Morning View Sessions. While the whole album is a gem, maybe check that out? Also, if you like the turntable work here, please, if only in your own time, listen to "Battlestar Scralatchtica." Not a lot of vocals, but worth a listen!

I wonder if you've noticed the unique way Brandon works with the mic. It's not that noticeable throughout most of the song due to the camera angle, but it's very visible in the last chorus. Just watch how he moves the mic to and away from his mouth with each note he sings and the precision of these movements - he knows EXACTLY where to place the mic to best fit each sound and pitch in order to avoid drops and spikes in volume. This is basically manual sound compression, and although many singers do it to an extent depending on a certain microphone type, I've never seen anyone do it with such calculated precision. I very much recommend watching their live performance of the song "Rogues" where Brandon's vocals and mic technique are on full display.

The pitch bending effect on the turn tables is usually done with filters, unless any digital effects are incorporated and depending on if its contained within the sample he is using. It sounds like he could be using some digital effects with the delay at the end.

the list of song from Incubus that everyone should listen to can be summarized as "all their songs" I still remember in high school (in 2000) I just got my first MiniDisc player and a friend gave me a "non copied totally legal" version of their album S.C.I.E.N.C.E, that was a really a defining moment for to take this musical rollercoaster. Each album brings another layer of how music can make us feel emotions. I don't know how to sing and I feel ashamed when I do, the only song I learned I sung to someone is Drive which is the song making me feel all the love I have for my wife who helped me be the better version of myself. And also I asked that when I die "Pardon me" should be played when I'm being incinerated

What always stuck out to me was the cadence he uses. It’s just the exact way talented rappers get off multiple syllable rhyme schemes. It effectively unshackles himself from the melody and crams so much into each bar. It makes him feel like a runaway train that feels like it’s going off the rails but the chorus keeps it on course. Genius writing you wouldn’t think to find in a rock song back then. The change in speed was part of his built in FXs, I forget what it’s called but it reminds me of a beat delay. This may have already been mentioned in the comments, but something that may blow your mind I've noticed in their live material is that in addition to Mike providing backing vocals, it looks like DJ Kilmore uses the turntables to play recorded samples of Brandon's own vocals so that they can incorporate Brandon's layered vocals from the studio versions into their live performances.
