Rumor has it that Tim worked with Avi to increase his "lows." It seems like the A Capella community is relatively small, because you can see different group members showing up in different videos. I love how excited you get! You seem like you FEEL the music just as much as you dissect it, which is so refreshing. There are other reactors and coaches who seem dry in comparison. I lump you in with Rebecca Vocal Athlete for the way you two are so passionate about it, both of you are excitable so your reactions are lively and fun to watch. Oh, right, well Avi can do overtones so it doesn't surprise me how he can change it so fast. He's awesome. Hey, don't apologize for loving it so much, your excitement is the most fun part of the video. It's infectious. So, IF you have not yet (I didn't see it on your channel but I could have missed it), how about checking out a video? Misty Mountains by Peter Hollens and Tim Foust. You'll LOVE it, I promise! It's also acapella, which is what Peter does! :)

As a basso profundo, it is very refreshing to find someone who really appreciates that vocal range. The additional resonance comes from the chest wall and abdominal muscles - the body parts that you physically feel kick drums, floor toms and low bass through at a rock concert. I've sung for two male voice choirs, and yes I could sing down to G0 clean (off the bottom of a grand piano, in fact) when I was younger, in practice and before 40 years of smoking ruined my voice. It may after being smoke-free since Feb 12th 2017 have recovered reasonably well though - I just managed a rather rocky G0, but having the breath for it is a problem, as I can't stand unaided. Sitting down I did it by laying right back in a recliner, as singing at such low pitches uses a lot or air! I once met a deeper bass, from a visiting Russian male voice choir who we hosted during their tour of the UK, and he could sing so low that you could almost count the Hz! My wife (a casual flautist) reckons that's true of me too, but she may be either exaggerating or thinking of something else. Not quite the control either nowadays, although close enough that practice might get me there, although never again off the bottom of the keyboard! OTOH, I cannot sing in mixed voice choirs as they so often combine baritone and bass - even in the bass parts I sometimes needed to sing down an octave, which I didn't like to do, but which the musical director of one of the choirs encouraged, as he said it made the sound "fatter" and "bulked it out". Not having heard it from the audience, I can't say, but we did get perfect scores in both compulsories at the Llangollen Internation Eisteddfod (I think that is still the only time that has ever happened), although we had to settle for 2nd place in the male voice choir category as two members sang off simultaneously during our final "free choice" song, which put us all off and we drifted - as it was a capella there was no way to correct when that happens - both were poor attendees at rehearsals and our musical director was absolutely incandescent with rage at them - so much that they made their own way home and didn't travel on the bus! In the 40 years since I have never seen anyone as furious - and I hope I never will. I'm not sure if they decided to make their own way or if he told them they were no longer members so not entitled to travel with us. It was justifiable anger though, as it was their lack of rehearsal that cost all of us that win, and he didn't actually get violent - just very, very scary. I actually thought he was going to burst something!. He was easily the best musical director I've ever sung or played (violin) for. I've also sung casually (at the pub, after the show) with Cambridge University's Kings College Singers, the rotating group of students from whom the King's Singers were an offshoot which graduated out. With music school on Saturdays, I had a six-day week from age 11 but gained a solid musical background was a member of 4 orchestras (and occasionally a fifth), two of which I led. However, the divisions between classical and popular and rock singing were harsh in those days (at least in the UK) and so what I performed and what I listened to were completely different. At music school, Messrs Gilbert & Sullivan were considered borderline frivolous and musical theatre was REALLY stretching the limits! So sad that a whole generation grew up with that belief. I much prefer Henk Poort's description - the genre is irrelevant to the quality. Music is either good or it isn't.

PLEASE make sure to look up the term „subharmonic register“ before watching VoicePlay for the first time. The Bass singer of the group, Geoff Castellucci, uses that bass singing technique in almost every song. And by the way, the technique that Tim used for the last note in this song is called „The Growl“ in the a cappella singing community. This technique uses the false folds to create the note instead of the normal vocal chords. I just wanted to write this as a small guide for bass singing techniques because you will hear a LOT of this stuff in your upcoming a cappella reactions.
@shawnadams1460
@shawnadams1460 3 жыл бұрын
Just an FYI for you.....he learned that subharmonic register from Tim Foust, the bass for Home Free. Tim Foust holds two world records, the most octave range at 10 and the lowest note performed by a human voice.

@@shawnadams1460 You’re not quite correct. Geoff learned the growl technique from Tim Foust, not subharmonic. Tim doesn‘t even know what the subharmonic Register is. I have watched many vocal coaches react to this particular video and every single one of them is shocked and pleased by that final note from Tim. As a bass singer Tim has the largest possible range a bass singer could have being able to go higher than pretty much every other bass singer out there and certainly being able to go lower than just about everyone. This version of this song with Avi and Tim both singing base is just so much fun to see or rather hear the differences in their voices with the different tones they have. It is obvious that all of these guys love what they do and we love listening to them do it.

At around 7:00 when she talks basses having to go high to low.. this is so true. Hardest choir song I recall (musics empire) was like that.
