Tim and Avi are trying to get a song with Geoff Castalucci I understand.. Do you think the Earth will survive this epic collaboration? Will they split tectonic plates with their vocal vibrations?

In an interview, Tim mentioned that he wanted to do something with several other basses, including some that are lower than him. Unfortunately, he didn't give names. I think, besides Geoff and Avi, some of the suspects would be Elliot Robinson (former bass of Home Free and of The House Jacks and also the invisible bass of Das Sound Machine in Pitch Perfect 2), Alvin Chea (Take Six), Eric Hollaway (probably the lowest), some people from Southern Gospel, and maybe some people, he met at the London A Capella Festival. (There is proof on KZbin that Home Free at least once attended that festival.)

@@friedemannkemm63 I'd love to see something like that ! I don't know most of the names you gave, my knowledge when it comes to music is quite poor, but I really love low voices. And I already know that both Tim and Geoff can also sing higher for the harmonies so most of the range is covered.
@friedemannkemm63

@@Vratz In the meantime, you might look for The Bass Gang, a group of young aspiring basses, also with large range. The bassiest thing, they did so far was Mad World. On that one, they also featured Elliot Robinson. But much like you, I am also waiting for the project, Tim has in his mind. 🙂 (Of course, you can also search for the names and groups, I mentioned. Especially Alvin Chea from Take Six is one of the main inspirations for most a capella basses.)

Would like to see your thoughts on these voices. Plus I am still waiting for someone to get their head aorund to Rhapsody who brought symphonic metal around the italian way great voice plus orchestra arrangements fantasy story over multiple albums.... I saw Home Free perform this live a week ago. It was their final encore of the concert, and the crowd...went...NUTS...as the first notes rang out. When Tim hit the final note, I honestly thought the speakers would blow out. Not only did it shake the entire theater, it sent the audience (including me) into a wild, cheering frenzy. The only thing more auditorially fun than Home Free on video is Home Free in the flesh!

And also the solo version of his duet with co-writer Joy Williams, "All Is Well", filmed in a church in Utrecht, Netherlands during Avi's recent European tour. Of course, the acoustics of the church enhance Avi's natural resonance. And in case you weren't aware, Avi was an opera/classical major in college, and had been offered a position as a basso profundo with the Los Angeles Opera when he was recruited into PTX in 2011. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qX_Nk3R3n6tnisk

Great breakdown! Been awhile since I've heard such an in depth analysis. Yes, love how they go from 3 men sustaining that high note in perfect unison to the dual base lead in to the basement drop. While I do sometimes miss their stacked high range with Chris, adding Chance has made them so much more versatile. They are truly the best group out there.

Well, having 2 basses, 2 or 3 baritones, 5 tenors, 4 people who can do some beatboxing as well as a world-class beatboxer, and 2 people who can whistle birds out of trees sounds a little like over-kill to me. ;-) Darn overachievers.

Such a wonderful cover by Home Free (as is usual), and your reaction is such an informative explanation of how specific techniques are performed, while making it easy for those of us who might not have such an extensive vocal education, to understand. You are quite possibly the best at explaining and reacting to these a cappella groups. I have been a subscriber since your last Home Free reaction. The "rabbit hole" they provide is deep and varied, but always amazing. I hope you get a chance to see some of the recent Home Free releases. Also, there are many solo releases by Tim Foust, Austin, Chance along with other collaborations.

This was the 2nd song I heard when I discovered Home Free 2 years ago. It is done in a reggae calypso beat. It showcases the higher & lower ranges of both Tim & Avi. That last note of Tim is impressive with how low he goes, but more impressive is how long he sustains the note. On the "Sing Off" Show (without Avi) Tim goes even lower & he impressed the judges so much that they gave them a standing ovation. And Adam once again was stellar in his vocal percussion.

One reason the voices have gotten more modern is that, for the most part, they are sung in order that the films were made, highlighting the sensibilities of the eras. For example, the first singer's pronunciation sounds very much like the posh "Mid-Atlantic accent" that was music and film standard in '39 when Snow White was made. Then, Pocahontas was made in the early 90's, and her voice reflects that "vibe".

You mentioned about Avi putting on the cowboy hat and theres a fun story behind that scene. That hat belonged to Chris Rupp who got it as a gift from a friend after Home Free won the sing off. The day they filmed this, they also filmed another Home Free video for Champagne taste on a beer budget (which Avi has a cameo in at 2:05 wearing the hat) and Chris said to Avi that they were going to turn him into a country boy by singing with them so much, so he gave Avi that hat. Then Avi decided to add the hat switch as a way of saying thank you to Chris and the guys.

Someday we need the base singers of Pentatonix, Home Free and Voiceplay to all get together and give us there very best in a single song - either one written to feature the bass or one that they chose as being something they could do a creditable conversion into something that features base - but at the same time, to have enough available for each of them to demonstrate the full vocal ranges they have.

Extreme bias here. First, of all the reactors who've reacted to Home Free, I think you and one other have done in-depth analyses. Beautiful, educational, and fun. Thank you. (I love to see what other people say, so I've gone through some of the comments and add my 2 cents to some.) My personal preference, among the a cappella groups working today, is for Home Free, head and shoulders above the rest. I had started watching Pentatonix, and then found Home Free. I no longer watch PTX, especially now that Avi is gone. There just isn't the same dynamic. Geoff of VP has a lovely voice, but also does "unnecessary base drops" (which annoy me tremendously) and I'm not fond of those or the VP catalog. I'd love to know if you agree with Shoky (It Doesn't Have to Make Sense) about their version of Tennessee Whiskey. If you want to see more Home Free (and I believe you might), some of their newer releases, Brother and Let the Music Play, come to mind. If you like amazing harmony, Helplessly Hoping, Do You Hear What I Hear, and Brothers in Arms come to mind. (I can swear I hear a cathedral organ in the last one.) American Pie, which they did with the originator, Don MacLean, will give you a good "look" at their individual voices. For fun, Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget, Butts Remix, and (again) Brother. These men are not only fantastically talented, they don't take themselves too seriously, and they appreciate their fans, the Home Fries (who, by the way, tend to be very loyal). By the way, I've subscribed. I hope you can continue to listen to Home Free.

Deerly musical; l agree with you on Geoff C. Just because you can do low notes does not mean you're a great bass singer.! First time I heard him I was liking what I heard . Quite a fun reaction thank you. If you want to play further with the acapella basses all of them have done songs just harmonizing with themselves. Try their solo channels. Geoff Castellucci, Tim Foust both use multiples of themselves. Avi Kaplan does as well but he has gotten seriously carried away on his new album Floating On a Dream he does all the vocals. None of them stick to acapella in their solo work. Tim, Austin (high tenor in this) and Avi all live around Nashville Tennessee now. Avi did just tweet to the other two if they would like to do a bass trio. We will have to see if it happens 😎 Subscribed

Now you should check Peter Hollens and Tim Foust doing Misty Mountains. See how low Tim can go or should i say feel. Be sure to use head phones so you do not miss a thing.

I love that the personal space is so colorful and cheery but the brightest thing there is your smile. 😊 Your personality, plus your knowledge and ability to explain simply for us lesser folk make yours always a favorite channel to watch. For a bass with range, check out Geoff Castelluci and his group Voiceplay performing "The Oogie Boogie Song" (The Nightmare Before Christmas ").

At the time this video was made, Avi was still a member of Pentatonix. He didn't leave the group until mid 2017.
