Is it fair that I started my journey listening to Deftones with a cameo from Maynard James Keenan, but that's what happened. After listening to Chino Moreno and Maynard slay the vocals in "Passenger", I was eager to check out a Deftones track that peaked at number 3 in Billboard Music's Alternative Songs chart!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Deftones performing "Change (In the House of Flies)" for the first time.

I once saw Robert Smith of The Cure being described by the New York Times as a “crooner” and was so confused because I always thought of crooning as an old style like Frank Sinatra. I know that Deftones are very inspired by the Cure. Is there something about both of their singing styles that is in common with old timey crooning somehow?

I totally agree. I always say to peoole, when they ask me why Chino is my favorite singer; "It's his voice but it's also his whispers and pauses." She explained it in technical terms I did not know! A great example of this is the second verse in Bitches Brew by Crosses when he sings "' 'Cause when you move and shake..." you would think the whisper should go on "move" but he instead puts it on "when" and it's SO perfect. He really knows how to play with the pauses and the whispers! Between Chino and Maynard, "Passenger" is like a masterclass in sexy whispers😁

This song is the musical equivalent of sinking beneath the surface of the pacific ocean out past the third breaker just after sunset. It's dark, it's cool, it's a little scary, it's oddly comforting, and it's all you can think about when you're in it. I would strongly recommend Knife Prty after this one. If you're into insane vocal changes from a single singer I can highly recommend Opeth, the best single song example from them is "Lotus Eater", but the change from "Coil" to "Heir Apparent" is also insane. Funny enough all of these are off the same album, "Watershed", I actually didn't intend that.

I'd really love to know how much of Chino's vocalisations are an affectation and how much is just his natural, instinctual approach to singing. Even ignoring all of the post-production and effects, he has one of the most distinctive voices in rock, not just because of tone/timbre but just all the non-standard techniques he constantly employs. Maybe not the most technically proficient singer out there but amazing nonetheless.
