It's not a character, it's HIM. That's the sad part. His suicide shocked everyone, but he'd been telling us how he'd been feeling from the very beginning. Those emotions were 100% real and 100% his. He didn't need to act anything out, and that's what makes listening to his music that much more gut wrenching now that he's gone. It wasn't acting, it was catharsis.

@@shakavibes1 if you research this song, Mike Shinoda wrote the majority of its lyrics (as was the case for most of Linkin Park's discography). There are absolutely LP songs where the themes or jumping off point came from conversations Mike and Chester had about Chester's experiences, but Mike is the primary songwriter for most of their material (music, arrangement, production and lyrics). Generally was inspired by something in Chester's life it was still Mike who would write most of the song, show it to Chester, and then they'd collaborate on finishing them or sometimes adjusting them to better fit. A lot of fans assume that each member of a band writes the part that they perform on the recording or live, but that isn't a given. A lot of the guitar parts in LP were also written (and sometimes performed on the records) by Mike as well. Chester did bring the feeling to those lyrics that we all connected with, but it's not necessarily the case that he wrote the lyrics that people are now associating with his life due to his unfortunate passing.

To this day, just as I did when he was alive, I still can't listen to this song without sobbing. It quite literally saves my life and the lives of my 7 kids. IMO it's absolutely impossible to not feel the truly raw emotion in his voice - the hurt, anguish, profound sadness and crippling depression. I first heard this song when I finally hit rock bottom in a 16yr-long abusive marriage, and it felt as though he was projecting and speaking directly to exactly what I was feeling. The very day I first heard this song was the day I slipped into suicidal thoughts, and the only thing that kept me from following through was knowing what future would be in store for my children...they would have lost the only person that literally and physically stood between them and physical harm. Not long after that day, my ex-husband called me from the ship(Navy) and said, "I'll be home soon, and I'll be retired. That means I'll be home, Every. Day. DO. YOU. UNDERSTAND. ME???". I knew what that meant - he was finally gonna kill me. He was gonna make good with his threats. And that's when I decided to call my parents, tell them the truth of what all had been going on, and I asked to come back home with my 7 kids. 2 days later I was on the road with my kids driving from VA to TX, had a large moving van packed with our belongings, and all his stuff in trash bags in a storage building. And I haven't looked back since. This song is one of the things that snapped me out of it and helped to give me the courage to leave.

I'm not entirely sure how i got here, but here i am. You commented at the end of this video about how you could see people finding it cathartic to find music like this. That is extremely true. I wouldn't still be here without Chester. In highschool my mental health plumeted. Long story short. Chester is who saved me. His music, his lyrics and the emotion in his voice. He made me feel like i wasn't alone. And i was, and still am, somehow able to align myself with him. When i listen to his songs, it's almost like i'm along side him. When he does his incredible screams of anger or rage or sings his words of sadness and loneliness. I can feel his emotions release, into the air, just free and gone. What's more, my emotions go with his. It's like his voice tears the emotion he's projecting out of me and is released along side his own. This ability turned out to be double edged however. When Chester passed, all my thoughts focused on one thing. If he couldn't beat the demon (depression), how could i? He saved my life and i have no doubt, thousands of others. However, in the end, he succumbed to the demon. I fell into a dark hole when he passed. Much like the one he pulled me out of to begin with. I ended up seeing a psychologist to try to get help. I can't say i'm good now, but the psychologist made me focus, instead of what Chester and I had in common, what makes us different. What Chester went through and what made his situation entirely different to my own. It doesn't mean i can beat the demon. It's a fight that lasts a lifetime. What it means is that i can use Chester's music just as i always did. As a salvation. Without comparing his struggle to my own. We all have our own struggles. Just because one person lost, doesn't mean we will all lose. In life, every time you go to sleep and wake up the next day, is a day you beat the demon. Let the darkness be dark, Chester is my light.

I saw a post somewhere that basically boiled down to “if you have depression and you’re still here, that means you’re not struggling with depression. Depression is struggling with you”. And that is a very empowering way to see it. We don’t need to be defined by depression, and of course that doesn’t mean depression shouldn’t be accounted for in our lives, but ultimately it doesn’t have to kill us. It’s all about management. And if we perceive ourselves as more powerful than our dark thoughts and find out ways to remember that, then we can make it. But also, one time I heard Chester say that the space between his ears was the worst place to be, and that really sums it up. So try not to be in your head too much.

First off, there's very little anyone can do for someone who is going through this kind of mental illness. It's chronic, and it beats you down over time. That fight is something only the sufferer can win. The best you can do is be supportive in their improvement. Second, most people don't give much of a crap what you're going through until it's too late. And it makes sense. Every day we hear people talking about how bad they have it, and how much they're suffering. Many of them are just venting, and some are just trying to manipulate you. Its not clear to other people how bad a state you are in until you prove it by doing something you can't come back from.

As a teenager, the way Chester screamed in LP’s music was so cathartic both to listen to and sing/scream along with. RIP Chester.

This one is so raw, much more so than the studio version.

"It reminds me of a dying animal - and not in a bad way!" that's quite the quote 😂 You somehow make me appreciate Linkin Park even more, and I appreciate that a lot. It's a whole other experience to listen to a song like this once you realize how much effort and energy goes into performing it.

@@JupiterThndr Yeah he has a couple live versions of that scream. His live versions are never as crazy as the studio but that is because he doesn't get 23140923 tries to perfect it while putting on a show for who knows how long by that point.

One of the most underrated voices of all time. Chester can go from full on screaming to a perfect pitched harmony over and over. And sounds better live imo.

On the album, this song (track 2) followed by Leave Out All The Rest (track 3) is a haunting and foreshadowed glimpse into where Chester's head was. I cannot listen to them back to back, my heart is already broken enough over this tragedy.

Minutes to Midnight is by far my favorite album from any band ever. The way the songs transition between anger, hopefullness and just plain sadness and defeat really makes it special to me, it's like you're going through that rollercoaster of emotions and all of them seem so genuine and true when they perform it

As a 20 year LP fan who has seen them live and has had my life impacted as most of us have, this was very hard to watch. Knowing where those facial expressions and lyrics came from- not a character or acting at all- I'm sitting here in tears over the loss of this incredible life. This man is very sorely missed.

I felt that too, heartbreaking to know how he felt at most times and to know we only could scratch the surface of his demons. CB is an inspiration and also a warning. Considering we also lost Trevor Strahnd recently to a similar mental struggle it's ripping my heart out.

When you talked about his outstanding breath control while screaming. I really wanted to see your reaction to the album version of Given Up which includes the full 17 second scream unbroken. That change in the note of his scream is a slide which I've heard from other vocalists that that is incredibly difficult to do. I understand the studio is a different environment from the stage, but it' still a wonderful show of Chester's iron lungs.
