I'm not 61, but was raised with this era of music too (mainly thanks to my dad). The thing that gets me is when the person has a lot of musical intelligence and hears it for the first time, they notice and enjoy the bits that are really unique. Quite often people will like music but not really have a clue what makes it work, or will just not notice. When someone does notice, it's really satisfying. It's even more fun when they notice something you hadn't. I don't think she clocked the fact that the guitars and keys were playing on one time signature and the drums on another, phasing in and out. Some of those drum interrupts reset the time signatures. To be fair, someone had to explain it to me too, but....

My favorite part of this riff: Jimmy Page is hitting an open string on an upstroke between those half steps that everyone notices. It’s the tiniest thing to hear but try nailing it cleanly every time through the riff. Everyone hits the half steps but try to consistently hit that open string upstroke in a song that is odd meter and purposefully doesn’t resolve the tension of the chord structure. I love how they use middle eastern melody as an inspiration. This song is the one Robert Plant looks back on as their crowning achievement. Odd meter, harmonic tension unresolved, sexual tension from his vocals, the drum breaks hidden in the changes of the sections and the end of the song, Jimmy hitting all those melodically scribbled glissando guitar lines and how locked in he is in to John Bonhams drums. John Paul Jones creating all that atmospheric tension on the keyboards. It’s their masterpiece, at least according to Robert Plant.

I recently watched an old interview with Robert Plant and he said he doesn't ever remember how he sang in any previous live performance because he was singing emotionally from 'the zone'. He sings from pure instinct. Whatever is inside him at that moment comes out through his voice. You'll never see him perform the same song the same way twice! And ohhh yesss, he is so sexy when he sings. Even when he just stands there holding his fingers up in the air expressively, delicately. A blond haired god of rock. Sigh.... The band learnt their craft from the great blues and jazz singers and music from black America that was so popular in the north of England when they were growing up. It had a lot of influence on Robert Plant's uninhibited and playful vocal style.

Hi Elizabeth! I stumbled across your KZbin channel just the other day while trying to kill an ear worm for Kashmir. I was looking for various versions; original, covers, older and newer live versions, reaction videos, etc. That is when I discovered your channel and this video. I'm totally enthralled watching you explain all the intracacies of the human voice in a way that a laymen can understand. Your excitement when watching these videos is infectious! In all honesty, one does not typically think of someone who performs opera and is as educated about music as you are to appreciate rock. My parents would always told me that rock was the "fast food of music" and I should listen to "quality music". But after watching your videos I feel totally vindicated! I only wish my parents were still with me so I could show them that rock musicians and singers are indeed talented! Hahaha! Please review more Led Zeppelin, of course; they're my favorite band, and I get the impression that you enjoy them quite a bit, yourself. If I may make a suggestion, I think it would be really wonderful for you to interview these artists while you're reviewing their music, where you can get their insights and recollections. I think this would be especially cool for Robert Plant, who's getting up there in years and who knows how long we'll have him around to share with us his gifts. Music is not typically a subject I would subscribe to on KZbin, but with your enthusiasm for rock music and effervescent personality, you have piqued my curiosity. You can count me as a new subscriber! Warmest regards!

It's atmospheric, designed to transport you to the mythical Sangri-La. The bass, pounding drums brilliantly set the rhythmic background, the lead guitar and keyboards provide the repetitive orientalist flavour (the upwards half-steps and full step then back again) and the vocal is incidental and improvisational, not the meat of it, but compliments the chord changes. My all time favorite Zeppelin song. Especially the live version from the movie, The Song Remains The Same. The shots of the audience add so much to the enjoyment of the song.

@@gregvergara7596 Yes amazing amazing performance! Check out the "rough mix" version of this song IMO one of the best moments in music 🙌🏽

Try the badge holders only version from LA in 77...much better vocals and overall musicianship.

You are a fantastic person. You elevate my late nights in the studio. Painting to the music while hearing your comments works for me.
