I listened to a ton of Evanescence in college. They got paired with Lincoln Park a lot in my dorm in 2002 (we had a weird section 🤣). I haven't listened to Evanescence in a while, but I always remembered Amy Lee's voice. It's such a magical, golden voice. It was my gateway drug to symphonic metal, so to speak. Also, she's doing that piano herself. Multi-talented. One funny thing I took from this: I must have listened to this song 50 times and I always thought the line in the pre-chorus was "I...dive again" and not "I'm...dying again". Which made sense in my brain because "dive" goes with "going under" and the imagery of diving into water in the video. Crazy that I've had this line wrong in my head for over 20 years!

Amy Lee is an absolute LEGEND of the 2000's. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing her voice. It's so unique and piercing and haunting that you can't confuse her with anyone else. I used to think that her vocals were highly studio altered until I had the opportunity to meet her during a concert in Indianapolis while she was warming up. I can vouch that absolutely that is EXACTLY what she sounds like live. There is no strain or wobble in her voice AT ALL. She can easily shatter glass - did it as a party trick during the meet & greet on her first go. Crazy talented.

Back in 2003 when Evanescence was touring for "The Fallen" album, the Charlotte, NC date had to be rescheduled due to Amy falling ill. At the makeup show, she said she got really sick from doing the underwater scenes for the "Going Under" video. The band did a KILLER cover of "Zero" by the Smashing Pumpkins and Amy sat on the edge of the stage while playing a keyboard to have the whole crowd embarrass her bandmate by singing happy birthday to him. Her voice was just as good in person as it was on the album. Also, the video has a lot of extra crowd sounds in it that are not present in the album version. The guitar solo was heavily drowned out by them. I recall guitarist Ben Moody's tone was harshly criticized at the time due to him using what were considered low quality Line6 amps. Considering "The Fallen" was the sixth best selling album of the 21st century, I think the band made out just fine.

@notyoaveragesouthernmama57347 ай бұрын
@@RyanEglitisEverything that made Fallen and Evanescence successful was because of Amy. Even My Immortal, "Ben's Song" was bound for the scrapheap before Amy pulled it out, changed some lyrics, and wrote the bridge for it. Ben needed to leave because if he stayed Evanescence wouldn't exist. He went on to write songs like Because of You by Kelly Clarkson. Ben leaving was the best possible thing for the band.

@@notyoaveragesouthernmama5734 Amy definitely had the voice and a lot of the artistic flair. Ben reined that in and focused it towards what would be popular (along with their first record company). Yes, writing for pop stars kind of proves that point - it's in the name POP(ular). The results speak for themselves - Fallen and Origin are amazing throughout, the subsequent ones are merely good (with great singing). I also know he had to leave because of toxic interpersonal stuff, but barring that (not possible, I know), I think they were better musically with him. Saying all that, it's clear he needed a ton of the things Amy brought to the table, because while good, We Are the Fallen is in the opposite boat as Evanesence. They have the hooks, but can't quite deliver on the flair and singing chops of a truly top tier band.

I saw Evanescence in concert in 2007. She was suffering from a sore throat. You wouldn’t know it. The whole show was amazing!

Fascinated how your analysis going... Feeling sooo deeply is kinda "creepy", disturbing to realise someone can dig that deep just listening. Like if that was me i wouldn't want anyone going so beyond what's first "public" layer. But in terms of youtube video its awesome.

"My Last Breath" is an Evanescence song that I don't think gets enough love. Almost no reactions to it. It may not feature Amy's full range, but the mix of electronica and metal with soaring violins is unique!

Evanescence has been my very favourite band for over 20 years now, literally since childhood and well into adulthood. They're my most listened to band on Spotify. I was a young pianist (about 10 years old) and the only piano music I knew was Classical. Then, I heard Evanescence. Amy showed me that I could do so much more, and that influenced the creation of my own compositions. That inspiration has kept me playing piano throughout my life. I am grateful for the way this band has touched my soul, through all of the darkness.

The piano hits in there really reminded me of "Call me Little Sunshine" by Ghost. Love how in both tracks those really add to the uneasy feeling you get from them.

Many performers (musical and otherwise) talk about getting "in the zone." When you see a guitarist who seems like they're in a trance, when you see a dancer who seems like they're completely lost, and both of them are always pulling off an absolutely killer performance, that's it. Amy Lee routinely acts and sounds like she's there. That's correctly known as a "flow state." Hungarian research Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is best-known for researching this, in-depth. Other people seek this state as well. As a developer (programmer), I can get into a flow state while working on code (frequently requires some fast / loud music, a certain amount of caffeine and avoiding certain technologies) and ...geez, where did the day go? But man ... I got SO MUCH done today.

Amy Lee is right up there with Ann Wilson as some of the best vocalists in rock music. Not just female vocalists, but vocalists, period. Going Under is one of my favorite Evanescence songs. Great choice! Check out Whisper too!

Hear me out. Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society) , In This River LIVE in Paris (2006). What an incredible performance with a heart-wrenching story behind it. Even if not for a video, but just your own personal enjoyment.

I have this particular obsession with Evanescence; more so with Amy Lee herself and it started in 2003 when they were featured in the abysmal Ben Affleck led movie of Daredevil. In that instance of the film when I heard "Bring Me to Life" for the very first time, I was IMMEDIATELY transported to a safe space in my world of just her mesmerizing vocals and I. There, I continue to live within the foundations of what her sound fills my life with in the comfort, the healing, and the absolute enchantment of her pitches and hypnotizing range of voice. I attribute such a passion and obsession to a highlight in my life where I nearly lost my life as a vehicle I traveled in fell 45ft off a cliff and left me hospitalized for 3 months. Laying there, paralyzed, speechless, and comatose for a good duration of three months and broken still, I was provided her music and chilling vocals by family who recognized my admiration for her and to say Evanescence saved my life is no understatement. Laying there absolutely broken bodily with a swollen brain, as the primary impact and injury was sustained mentally with lacerations and trauma to the brain itself, vegetative and a composure likened to a corpse itself the one memory that I was fortunate to retain was the lyrics and emotions that her music touched in my heart that I mouthed the words to (before my ability of speech had returned to me) to each and every one of her tracks; both mainstream and unreleased (such as "Missing" look it up if you have the time). I apologize for the long-winded rant of an obsessed fan, but Amy Lee is on a whole plane to herself in my life when that first moment I heard her vocals I was boarded on the years-long infatuation train of everything Amy Lynn Lee, and will forever regard her as the saint to bring healing to my world.

I LOVE Amy Lee's voice and Going Under has always been one of my favorite songs. You've been through A LOT. God bless you. Years ago, my father had a couple freak accidents that required surgery, and after unlikely post-surgery complications, he had to relearn how to walk, talk, read, and write. It left him with partial perm. disabilities, so I FEEL for you, Mathew.

Amy Lee has one of the greatest and yet underappreciated voices of all time. I've loved it since I first heard it back in 2003, and I still love it today. Nobody's voice pulls at my emotions like hers does.

I love your reactions! I just saw an old interview a few weeks ago and saw that Amy Lee and Lzzy Hale are really good friends. Amy even sang with Halestorm on Break In, it's a great song! Those two ladies are soooo amazing! I never thought I'd like any female vocalist more than Ann Wilson or Bonnie Tyler and Stevie Nick's, but my goodness, I was wrong! They all have so many special things about their voices and are just insanely talented. Another awesome song and review! I love how you truly listen and pick up on everything! It's hard not to smile watching along, and i love that you stop and explain whats going on and rewind so we can all hear everything that makes these vocalists so special! ❤
