One of my favorite concert memories. I saw Tool at an outdoor venue, many years ago, they were touring behind Lateralus. It poured rain pretty much the entire time. Just soaked through. On "I'm praying for rain," they hit the flood lights and lit everything. Rain just pouring down, obscuring everything, glowing in the light. Very cool moment.

Tool presents this amazing concert dichotomy. As someone that loves being close to the stage or in the pit, I saw tool 2 days in a row, first day I was against the rails at the front. The second I was in the stands. The perspective changes so much to the show vs the songs that just stay amazing

@Jake9066 That's the one! I had on some thrift store corduroy shirt, weighed about 20 lbs by the end. I was only a year out of high school. I also remember that during "Disposition/Reflection/Triad" (I think), the only real lyric was "watch the weather change." The rain stopped and didn't pick up again until the song was over. Just a crazy Carey polyrhythm, backed up with the Melvins drummer, and dancers swaying from cables suspended from the stage's superstructure. Wild concert, good times.

Probably still one of my favorite tool songs, and literally the first i ever heard. The bit about 'learn to swim' is a nod to comedian Bill Hicks who had jokes about ocean front property owning yuppies falling into the ocean. Also arizona bay is the name of Bill Hicks posthumously released comedy album, it contained "Ahhh, ha ha ha, it's gone, it's gone, it's gone. Oh, it's gone. All the sh*tty shows are gone, all the idiots screaming in the f*cking wind are dead, I love it. Leaving nothing but a cool, beautiful serenity called...Arizona Bay. That's right, when L.A. falls in the f*cking ocean and is flushed away, all that it will leave...is Arizona Bay."

Tom's mother, Mary, is an AMAZING person!!! She earned a master's degree in African and Latin American/Peru history in the early 50s and spent the rest of the decade teaching English in Germany, Peru, and Japan while circling the globe on an old freighter. In the early 60s she lived in Kenya where she met and married Tom's father, Ngethe Njoroge, during the Mau Mau Uprising that eventually repelled England's colonial rule. She participated heavily as an activist in the Civil Rights Movement and also is a long time member of the NAACP, the Chicago Urban League and CPUSA (Communist Party USA, and no that's not a bad thing like our govt has brainwashed people to think). In the late 80s, she quit teaching after 22 years and founded Parents for Rock and Rap, an anti-censorship group that stood against Tipper Gore's Parents Music Resource Center. Although Tom's dad left when Tom was a baby, he held many high ranking govt. positions back in Kenya, his sister, Tom's Auntie, was the first female member of parliament there, and Tom's great Uncle become the first president of a free Kenya. Tom himself has a masters from Harvard in PoliSci, so to say Tom was born with an innate instinct to be an activist and "rage against the machine" is the understatement of the late 20th century!! 😂😂

Most important line of the song "Don't just call me pessimist, try and read between the lines". He wants humanity to wake up and realize these superfluous things are meaningless. "Learn to swim" is an invitation to look deeper, swim through the subconscious. Tune into yourself. Be present. Side note: watching this in concert would definitely show you this song is very much flows like water. The whole crowd moves like a wave. Even Maynard on stage (in the background), one foot forward, swaying front and back. It's all one big wave. Love your in-depth reactions. Thank you!

“Learn to swim” comes from the title being able to be pronounced as enema. It can also be pronounced anima, which is what “mom” or Mother Nature is. It has nothing to do with Jung. This is animism, not psychology.

That starting vocalization feels so primal because its basically a rhythmic breathing technique. Maynard is not a front man, he's an instrument that happens to be a vocalist. Since the Lateralus tour he's usually in the back. He started playing in the back when they started touring for Lateralus and the reason is the songs started getting much longer with him having nothing to do while the band is jamming. I mean they have 10 minute songs with him having 3 minutes of vocals and 7 minutes to kill.

I've tried to explain how funny Tool songs are to so many people. Their sound is aggressive and heavy, and Maynards grit adds a level of anger to their music that completely masks the satire and humour in a lot of Tool songs. This is a great example of it. Even the ' I'm praying for rain, I'm praying for tidal waves' section. Its beautiful, but there's a satire that he's like ' God I wish it would just shit it down and just flush LA into the sea' lol. As aside, when that section kicks in live.. its such an ethereal experience. I'm not religious, but that moment is transcendent and just fantastic. Made my eyes leak last time I saw them lol.

Also, Ænima as an Album is dedicated to Comedian Bill Hicks, who the band toured with early in their careers and became close friends with him. He died of cancer in 1994 and a lot of the songs on this album refer to things Bill said. "Arizona Bay" was a bit he did where he talked about how shallow, how awful LA was and how he couldn't wait till it dropped in the ocean. Thusly, Arizona Bay.

A lot of people dislike the album Emotive by A perfect circle but Counting Bodies like Sheep is such an insane song. Maynard's voice is great and the fuckery that happens in the song vocally I love. It's not a life changing song but I love it so much.

Tool's music features so many cool motifs, the way that they play with water vibes is profoundly dope. Their album Undertow often gives a feeling of being at the bottom of a muddy river, not just because of the lyrics, but somehow the music itself makes you feel like a creature in the muck. I feel their other main vibe is being in a dark desert, ifykyk

What I love most about Maynard's approach to vocals (at least where Tool is concerned) is how he treats his voice as just another part of the ensemble. What makes Tool, Tool is that it's all about the collective. No one part is more important than the others, and that each part serves to support and enhance another part.
@brutesquadbbq2268Ай бұрын
Danny isn’t doing blast beats there, he’s doing quad rolls. Basically playing 16ths and sextuplets breaking up each individual part of the note between both hands and both feet. Quads and Swiss triplets are a go to crutch for Danny and he uses them incredibly well. And I say they’re a crutch because that’s what Danny called them in a Modern Drummer interview from many years ago.
@codymoe4986Ай бұрын
They are perfectly fine, given the appropriate musical selection, style, etc. Just because Danny Carey says it, doesn't make it true. It is simply his opinion... And I guarantee he'd agree with me...music is art and art is subjective. Once again for posterity's sake, just because you or Danny Carey don't agree, like, etc, doesn't make it so...
@brutesquadbbq2268Ай бұрын
@@codymoe4986 I don’t disagree, I think the way he uses them is great, but if the man identifies them as crutch in HIS OWN playing then I’ll agree with him. And it’s FINE to have a crutch as a musician, we all have them.

I remember sitting in my friend's car in the 90's listening to this. This was exactly how we all felt about the world at the time. This was one of many anthems that were the backdrop of our youth. In a weird way, it's another reminder for me why Woodstock '99 was burnt to the ground. We welcomed the end of the world. I don't know if it was right or wrong to feel that way at the time, but I don't think right or wrong is the point either. It's just what was happening. It still feels that way a lot of the time.

the fantasy of an apocalypse can be very cathartic when you're feeling hopeless and helpless. imagining mother nature punishing the shallow self-obsessed assholes of the world by wiping california (a veritable beacon of mindless consumerism and hunger for fame) off the map feels GOOD. but it IS just a fantasy, and eventually you have to decide what you personally want to do about all the bullshit you see around you. i think this was tool's moment to revel in an apocalyptic fantasy, but you can see in many, MANY other songs how they've chosen to channel their anger and their hopes for humanity in the long run.
@Enl1thened1Ай бұрын
I think the way Tool assembles it songs on album and sometimes within a song is like the cleansing of the pallet when changing song tempo, they alternate power and then a kind of interlude between the next track, much as you would do when wine tasting?? Food for thought!

“Sometimes… one mind goes insane and just ekes out this creation that is complete brilliant human expression.” - this is profoundly worded and so accurate. I have had those moments of creativity where I have just been so in tune with my art but completely out of sync with the rest of the human experience. I strive for those moments for the sake of art but they are so damaging if not managed correctly. The pain in art is too real to not discuss, so thank you for understanding.

I think you will really appreciate the nuances and meaning of it with your incredibly intelligent and in depth thinking. Its also a great homage to "Mom" referred to in this song (our planet) and Maynard's love of Arizona. Never stop being you! Forever in thanks - Emilee

You have to do H next, the closest you will get to a rock ballad from Tool! On RATM, Maynard lived and rehearsed with Tom Morello, in the days leading up to the creation of Tool and RATM, Tom and Adam knew each other from home, and they rented Danny's rehearsal space (that they still use to this day) So Maynard is actually on a RATM song ("know your enemy" i think" and on Green Jelly's "Three little pigs". Tool and RATM sorta grew up together and toured a lot together in the early days.

This song and 'Third Eye' are love letters to the late comedian Bill Hicks, who was the inspiration for the album in the first place, using clips from some of his performances in 'Third Eye' and used the reference of Bill's "Arizona Bay" joke for this song. They even put an art piece of him in the album booklet with the line "Another Dead Hero" Much love fellow Tucsonan 💛
