As a retired library clerk - school and public, I can't emphasize enough that storing books in cardboard boxes in a unheated metal storage container for two years is a recipe for disaster. You might as well take all the boxes you have just packed and take them right away to the recycling depot and save yourself the trouble two years from now. There must be an empty room (heated) in your chateau that the books can be stored on bookshelves until you are ready to display them. Please listen to all your subscriber's advice.

Totally agree. I had in-laws who stored books in an attached and insulated garage in the mild climate of California for 2 years and when the cardboard boxes were opened the books went straight to the trash. MILDEW AND MOLD

Stephanie, PLEASE, PLEASE reconsider using containers. At work when there was a remodel/addition all types of things were stored in containers like you are doing. When it was time to move everything back in, almost everything was ruined from moisture, damp or heat or cold. Even with professional cleaning, the cloth items had to be thrown out along with the books. It was a disaster

I agree, we recently sold several containers we used for temporary storage while we added a wing on the house. The containers must be on footings to raise them off the ground, and you must run a dehumidifier 24/7. Even so, do not put your books, artwork, clothing/cloth, furniture or the paneling in a container. They are fine for items like glass or china, but you will need shelving as the boxes will become damp and collapse.

And in summer - and summer is coming - the heat is far more intense inside those metal containers so is likely to be harmful re any wooden items. I had not realized HOW very very hot it can become until I opened mine up on a warm sunny day. It would have been far better if I had had built a budget big shed made of wood but with internal insulation and with enough height in the roof for air flow and some insulation up there too - especially above - to keep the temperature more regular.

Why spend time hauling boxes of books, beautiful paneling, chairs, etc all the way to storage containers when you could pickup and clean a couple of the servant's rooms. Yes they are in bad condition but they would be closer and you could put heaters on a timer. By the time you haul everything outside you could have prepared (cleaned out & better than metal containers) several rooms and it would be safer for your items, protected better and a lot easier to get to. If...your items become damaged from being in hot..cold..wet..damp containers; would your insurance pay for replacement? They would if stored in the Chateau. Please think about it. Ask your other Chateau owners if they would do what you are planning to do.

Friends did this and I’m afraid to say the items deteriorated due to changing temperatures and what had been previously been stored in the containers. Maybe self storage would be better for the more precious items.

You would need a climate controlled environment for the books. Books need humidity to be below 50%. Otherwise, books will mold. Fabrics and wood may react to humidity as well.

Steph, I have never commented on one of your video's before (despite watching all of them!) but felt I had to add to the convo. We stored family antique furniture in a lined shipping container and it was all completely ruined when we brought it out!! Putting it in your outbuildings, covering it well and adding rodent control would be a better option - we're farmers so experienced in storing things in outbuildings. Good luck!

If you don't have any friends with free space that you can rent from them to store your things, then I would suggest renting a temperature controlled storage unit. Given how much you spent on the paneling alone, taking better precautions is absolutely worth it.

The books and paneling will be ruined in a container: we own a restoration company and we preserve anything that has been damaged that’s covered by insurance. I think you need to use this as a short term solution for a month or two and find a better alternative or you will lose everything from mold and humidity.

I am sorry to say, I have also experienced the loss of items I stored in a shipping container. One year later, and all items that were not impermeable were damaged in some way. I threw a ton of it away. We had even had our container professionally spray-insulated, to the tune of $10,000 US dollars, and did interior work to make the inside pest-free and nicely sealed. We even installed a ventilation fan. It was filled with spiders and dust, and all summer it was 120° F inside. I live in a very arid area, and there were still some cloth items with some mold. I did recover some furniture and other things, but if it isn't porcelain or metal I would be wary. Even with the amount of work we did to it, most of our items were not in as good of repair as we would have hoped. We didn't have any water leaks, but that's what encasing the whole thing in 10k worth of commercial spray insulation will do. If we had maintained constant temperature control, maybe it would have worked better. We also checked on it often, though at the time there was nowhere else to keep our things. I would not recommend putting antique anything, or books, or fabrics, in a container for any length of time!

STEPHANIE!! I know first hand that those containers are prone to leak! When my parents did a major remodel to their home they decided to put all of the furnishings and linens in 3 huge containers. They had carefully selected the containers from the port in Savannah then put them in the shade of the big water oaks close to their home. After the remodeling was completed the containers were opened on move-in day and they found that numerous pieces of furniture had damage. For months the containers leaked! All of the bed linens were stored in the container along with fabrics, etc. All was molded and mildewed. It was sickening to say the least. The leaks were found, but at that point it was too late. In hindsight tarps should have been put over the containers as a preventative measure. Live and learn. I hope this will save you a heartache. ❤

Those containers will do excellent job of "passive" decluttering. Two years and the contents will be reduced to landfill material and no one will have to make any painful decisions whether or not to keep the items. Haul them off, Poof - be gone and Voila! problem solved.

Hi Lalanders! I just want to share some thoughts and knowledge about storing books and some other porous items in a non-climate control atmosphere. I heard Stephanie say somewhere in there that it may be several years till certain rooms get put back together and the items be taken out of those containers. The moisture and season changes here in central to eastern Pennsylvania have really caused some problems in my non-climate control storage. Everything leather has molded and my books now have a horrible musty odor. The humidity comes in, even though all doors and the roof are sealed. This year I bought absorbent crystals to try to pull the moisture out of the air and prevent further damage. And in the summertime, those metal containers harbor extreme heat, which will damage items as well. Blessings to all you there. You are definitely a blessing in my life.

I have done exactly this and paid the price. Basically had to toss about 60% of the books, mostly mould but also containers are not rodent & insect proof and had damage from both cockroaches and mice as well. Don't do it if the books and panelling are important to you. I will say I was out of country, stored the containers on my parents property and they were not regularly checked but even so really don't recommend.

Stephanie, why not utilize all the different guest bedrooms throughout the Château as a disjointed library. You can put at least one bookcase in every room. Your guest will be delighted at having things to read, and when you need a book, it will be readily available to you. In fact, you can even utilize a Barcode and handheld scanner to tell you where all your books are. You can have walls of books where you are building the new walls in the bedrooms you are planning to remodel. I am sure the thrift Shop must have plenty of bookshelves available. Just make sure that you screw them to the walls so that children cannot climb them so they don’t top all over. This means that when you finally do get to building your library, you will have room for all of your books and not have to get rid of any of them. Because frankly the winter salon does not have much wall space for bookshelves. You can also put your more Important/Precious books and cabinets behind Glass locked doors. They will be decorative, but safe. As far as putting that gorgeous paneling, or furniture, or books in containers, this is a disaster, waiting to happen. I stored items in an unheated basement up on raised platforms, and it was all ruined. You have those unfinished servant bedrooms. Why not use the that area for storage with some heaters ? Not only will those containers leak, but everything will be ruined by mold, and the paneling will warp. And truly, with all the space in your attic, you need containers to store, China? There must be a better way. All this is being said with love.

I also have concerns about if the food is still warm by the time it hits the dining room and the long explanations o what is on the plate takes place. I did think perhaps getting rid of the 'theatre' of the chef explaining each course could be replaced by a printed out menu card - with the explanations about what is local what is from the garden etc. I know this can be subject to change though. You should distribute all your books amongst the rooms - they will be destroyed in the containers. Same with anything that would suffer heat/cold/humidity/damp………..you get a lot of condensation on metal!

I watch your blog every day it is on. I usually do not make comments, however I feel this is important. I was a sales representative for large international moving companies for 30 years before I retired in 2013. I am concerned about the containers u have leased. These containers have no ventilation, they do not breath & will become extremely hot in the summer months. I am concerned about the antique paneling. The heat could cause it to buckle. Also the finish can melt & stick to fabric, paper & especially plastic. Those containers can get up to 110 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Blessings. Nancy Straub

I'm very concerned about those medal containers. Things can get moldy if they aren't air tight and proper ventilation. The PTO ( parent/ teacher organization) had a container like those and we lost props for plays, fundraiser items and school spirit wear. It was a shame.

I share the concerns about the damp, mold and critters. And the containers were placed directly on the grass, which will rot and animals will burrow underneath. I think the vegetation should have been removed first and the containers raised up on blocks to allow air circulation and reduce the problem with animals. Unless there is more to the plan....

There’s a product in Canada and US called Dri-Ez,,,,it crystallizes that you put in a container that has a basket. It was developed for boats in storage. You put the crystals in the basket which absorbs the moisture and drips into the container. We learnt about this when a friend stored her car for 2 years. When she came back it was covered in mold. We did it to our car when we stored it for 6 months. No smell, musty, Molly or damp. It does require emptying and refilling it on a regular basis but was well worth it. We also put it in a basement.

I was so concerned about the books that I forgot to mention that we once had a furniture store and decided to keep a new delivery of teak garden furniture temporarily in a shipping container. It was only during the summer and it got extremely hot and humit in there. As it was teak furniture for outside use anyway, it worked out, but I would never recomend storing stuff in a shipping container standig outside all year long. Everything will be damaged for good. The panelling for the rooms will not stand it either.

It’s Christmas, New Years and Arbor Day, rolled into one! Grant is my absolute favorite volunteer, guest, and inevitably was declared a LaLande family member! Along with his lovely family. His first visit blew my mind. He went head long into everything that needed fixing or made. Every summer, when I see the pergola, I think of Grant. It was so nice to see his family at LaLande. I stored books in totes outside in an enclosure for two years. They now all smell badly. I'm throwing the large majority of them away. I am only keeping my very favorites. I'm trying to remove the odor by putting them in baggies with dryer sheets (I saw this on KZbin). It's been two months and so far it has not removed the odor.

Book storage tip: keep at 15ºC or higher in order to avoid mold. Also, keep air flow and do not store treasured books along exterior walls, as temperature fluctuations will be too great and will create mold conditions in the paper.

Marie should get a Michelin star or two for her wonderful food she turns out! Many others have mentioned on here that it is not a good idea putting all your lovely books into a metal, unheated container, as it will ruin them. The same with furniture. Everybody worrying about the books, I agree BUT didn’t Amaury insist panelling needed to be kept in the room it would be installed in to acclimatise it and ensure it doesn’t warp? I’m sure he must be advising against putting it into container. Or, is he no longer working on the project? He is rarely there now. Oh! You bought more panelling too? Seriously Stephanie, I am beginning to wonder about all this buying before you are anywhere near ready to renovate. Do you think a project manager may be of use? If you continue on your current course of action it is going to cost you so much heartache and financial loss. All said in kindness.

i once stored wooden furniture, books, decoration objets, dishware and so on, in a climate controlled unit for several years in between two apartment moves. worst decision ever. i could not keep a single thing so i cannot imagine what disaster awaits your beautiful panelings and collections in metal containers stored outside! containers are made to ship stuff overseas for a limited period of time, certainly not to store XVIIIth century wood panneling and chateau quality items...please consider another viable solution asap

Don't put the panelling in the container, it will warp! The books will be ruined and smell awful!

Those shipping containers are susceptible to growing mold. My neighbors had to destroy everything that they had stored in theirs.

I agree the books in the loft were ok there. The new books maybe should have been put up there. Not in a container. They will get mouldy.

Please consider running power to the containers and using portable dehumidifiers to reduce risk of mold formation in your precious possessions. It’s worked for me in an unheated garage with no ventilation for six years, no mold, rust or damp issues.
